Mr Fig and I will be headed to Beijing in November. The last time we were there was January 2012 for a few days for our honeymoon. The last time before that, I did a semester-long study abroad in 2002. This time, we will be there for roughly a week. What should we do? Are there any good restaurants/bars we should check out? I am doing some work in Beijing, and I will be stuck in and around the Grand Millennium Hotel (GuoMao, Chaoyang, if that helps). I'll basically just have long lunches from 12-2 free, as well as nights after 4 or 5. I want to see... something. I have not been to mainland China before (though have visited Hong Kong), and don't speak the language. Any ideas for places to walk to, things to see, or even places to eat? It feels like a shame to fly for 20 hours each way and not see anything of the city.
I'm going to be in Beijing for a couple of days sometime soon and while I'm there I'd like to buy serious, modern, scholarly editions of some of the Chinese classics. Not translations into any modern language, definitely not versions set in simplified characters, but editions of the texts + scholarly apparatus. (So, not Penguin, not even Loeb - more like Oxford Classical Texts.) The difficulty is, I don't speak Chinese. [more inside]
I'm trying to find someone who uses public transit in Beijing to interview about a new service offered on the subway there. I'm writing a short article about the service. Do you have any suggestions as to how I could find someone who speaks both Chinese and English to talk to, either via email or a phone interview? I'm in the U.S. Just to be clear, this isn't something I could pay for, but the interview would probably take 10 minutes or less or someone's time, so I'm hoping someone would be willing.
Hello, I'll be leaving China soon and I want to bring back some stuff that you can only find in Beijing (China). I already bought a lot of things from Xiaomi for example. Do you know anything else ? Have a good day ! P.S : no food
I'm attempting to plan a trip for an executive I'm supporting in a temp role, and if all goes well, I may get to keep the job. The guy is going to Beijing in the fall and will spend one night entertaining a group of Chinese executives. I need to plan the entertainment. Where do I send them? [more inside]
I am heading to Beijing this month where the air pollution is notoriously apalling. Yesterday the air quality index reached a level which was double the level at which Salt Lake City doctors recently declared as a healthy emergency. Earlier this year it reached a level which was double that again. Does anyone have any tips about how to deal with this? Is there any evidence those face masks actually help? Any other contraptions or medication that help ward off the effects? I certainly won't be jogging outside.
Hi, I've some prospect of an offer to work in Beijing for what I understand would be closer to a citizen's salary than an expat's, which in theory is okay. The number looks to be about 11,000 RMB per month. There is some Beijing cost-of-living info out there, but I'd be grateful for your experiences and thoughts. In short, I don't want to live somewhere dire by any standard and live on rice and twigs. Possible? Thank you for your thoughts.
Bought these cream & brown hollow "pebbles" at a Beijing market a few years ago. I think they are grown, because each has a hole, like it was picked from a tree maybe. They are extremely lightweight but have a hard exterior. The lady who sold them to me cautioned they would break if dropped. I'm going back to China soon and would like to buy more, if I know what to ask for. [more inside]
Once a long time ago, I was a few hours outside Beijing during the mid-Autumn festival, in a pretty rural area. We were given these amazing mooncakes with nuts and vegetables that were way tastier to me than the sweet bean-paste/egg/lotus-paste/etc. ones you normally get. Help me find the name of them so I can buy/bake my own. [more inside]

My boyfriend and I will be visiting my dad in China for two weeks at the end of October, beginning of November. I've been twice before (my dad has lived there for the past 12 years), but this will be my boyfriend's first time. We'd like a good mix of city and rural areas, and are tentatively planning four days in Shanghai, four in Beijing, four in Guilin, and four in Yunnan. However, we're open to other suggestions, so what do you think? Too much time in one place, not enough in another? Is there another must-see area? What should we do while we're in those places? Any ideas are welcome!

Look at GoogleMaps over Beijing. About a quarter of the buildings have rooftops that are red or blue. And the color is really strong in comparison to everything else. Has the image been colored, or are they just painted? Either way... Why?

I'm looking for professional digital printing services in Beijing similar to this one in Shanghai. I've used the Shanghai service several times for very large prints including gallery mounting and I need a comparable service in Beijing. It's important that the technician speak at least moderate english and that they have a good selection of professional papers and inks. FWIW, I've spoken quickly to a couple of shops at Wukesong in Beijing and haven't been impressed yet.
