Help me help my dog

I was just sitting outside on my friend's lawn with my dog, who was tied to a tree branch about 20 feet away (that I checked for strength before tying her up) and quietly watching squirrels. A woman walked by and smiled at us, and my dog lunged at her, breaking the tree branch, and proceeded to jump up on her and ram her nose into her, barking. I feel absolutely terrible and have no idea how to fix this. [more inside]

Why is my normally well behaved dog suddenly aggressive toward preteen and teenage boys?

Why is my normally well behaved dog suddenly aggressive toward preteen and teenage boys? I have a 2 1/2 year old male german shepherd who is very well trained and usually extremely happy and well behaved. He is from a breeder that has 30 years of experience breeding working german shepherds and his easy going temperment is one of the things we love about him. Until a week ago I would not have hesitated to let any toddler or child pet him or interact with him. Suddenly he has exhibited an extreme dislike for preteen and teenage boys. [more inside]

Get my cats off my table!

Our three cats are brazenly unfazed when we squirt them with water guns. They jump up on the counter tops, we squirt them, they scamper away, and then five minutes later they're back up there. What are other ways to make them fear the humans' surfaces? [more inside]

Frantic pigeons?

Today I was at Boston Common eating lunch, and observed a fairly large group of pigeons all acting in the same bizarre way. For upwards of half an hour (and despite no obvious bread-throwers), a group of 50 or so pigeons was tearing around the park at great speed and low altitude, stopping for frequent and very intense fights on the ground over nonexistent food. You don't hear this one every day.

I'd like to add a kitten to the family. However, I have a toy fox terrier which makes this difficult. Every cat I've had in the past would eventually begin stalking the dog, pawing him on his hindquarters and biting his neck. The dog would cower 24/7 and I ultimately needed to keep them in separate areas of the house, at all times, to protect him. I've tried various methods to prevent this, but since the last time I've owned a cat was over five years ago I'm open to re-trying anything.

Corporate Dysfunction

Is your company as dysfunctional as mine? From the outside looking in, everything seems great. From a customers point of view our product is quite polished. But....if you sit where I am, everything is a mess. Procedures that make no sense. Technology infrastructure that looks like spaghetti. Horrible data. Broken lines of communication. Inability to book a simple meeting room. People bitching about leaving stuff in the refrigerator. Meetings that go nowhere. I have seen this at other companies. Is this par for the course or do I need to get a new job? If this isn't the case in your company, what things ( process / procedure / software / behaviours/ etc. ) have made the biggest positive impact? If your company is as messy as mine, what things make you say WTF? Learn me about what happens in your corporate black box.....for better or worse.

My cats are STRANGE

[KITTY FILTER] My mother-and-daughter cat team both seem fascinated with the pepper shaker on the table, and love to rub their heads against it. They haven't tried to actually eat any. The daughter likes to sniff it, though. Web searches on cats and pepper only turn up the use of black pepper as a cat-repellant. Are my kitties wired backwards?

Do people really change?

I'm looking for figures on will-power. How many people who try to lose weight, quit smoking, kick an addiction, start exercising, etc. will be successful (particularly long term)? In other words, I'm looking for experimental or population studies on how often people are able to change their behavior in significant ways when they resolve to do so. Well supported anecdotal data about large groups ("vietnam vets were(n't) largely able to quit heroin on coming home") is only slightly less appreciated.
