bed bugs and beyond

Most mattress companies allow customers to return mattresses within a given time frame. I would like to know exactly what the mattress companies do to sterilize/de-louse returned mattresses before re-selling them? Have you ever purchased a "new" mattress that seemed... icky?

Major bedbug problem

I live with friends. We have a major infestation of bedbugs. (Cockroaches too, just for added fun.) I worry that all the bedbug oriented websites are trying to sell me snake oil. Tell me how to kill all the bugs short of burning down the entire house.

You are not my doctor. Please hit me up with anecdata.

On my right wrist and the back of the same hand, I have a patch of red inflamed skin roughly the same size as a round cotton wool pad. I woke up with it (about 16 hours ago). Earlier this evening I drew around it with a marker to see whether it would spread further, and I think it has a tiny bit. [more inside]

Bug out

Circumstances that be, our apartment has bed bugs. They appeared under our mattress and the landlord is bringing in exterminators. Though we are moving out and had given notice for the end of the month, I'm worried the landlord will try to ride us out and fumigate after we leave. So, if the landlord holds out on fumigation until after we leave... I've come to terms with trashing every piece of furniture, mattress, ikea thing, couch, and anything that can't be put into the dryer high for an hour. But what about my electronics? Should I just write-off everything, bag 'em, and put into a storage unit for a year? [more inside]

Live bedbug invasion - AGH!

I am staying in a motel and just found bedbugs in my room...unfortunately, literally crawling on me by the time I noticed! I called the manager and he promptly moved me to a new room, which I will be checking thoroughly in hopes that I can maybe achieve sufficient comfort to sleep tonight (HA). What else should I do, especially to prevent bringing an invasion home with me? [more inside]

oh god no

I was searching under my bed with a flashlight for an earring I dropped and in the process discovered a bug near the edge of my bedsheets. I killed the bug with a Kleenex and flushed it but didn't think to take a photo of it and now I am paranoid that it was a bedbug. Am googling pictures of bedbugs and the thing I found does look similar to what Google is showing. So...I guess I found a bedbug. Help me figure out my next steps. [more inside]

How many percentage points is one Bedbug Registry report worth?

I Pricelined myself into a two nights at a hotel in downtown Chicago. A few seconds later, I thought to check the Bedbug Registry. DANT DANT DAH, it has bedbug reports. Given these reports, help me assess the risk of actually encountering bedbugs, so I can decide whether to just abandoned the money I just paid (~$300) and get another hotel. [more inside]

First trip to a major city since the bed bug armies attacked...

Traveling to Minneapolis in early January--when making a hotel reservation, will it be offensive to inquire if they've had bed bug problems? Or will it be any use at all to ask? (assuming the receptionist will say, "no, no, everything's fine!") [more inside]

Found a bedbug in a library book - what now?

I was reading a library book when a bug crawled out. It was paper thin, and was moving incredibly slowly. My partner captured it and killed it, and then put it between two pieces of tape. We've looked online and, yep, probably a bedbug. What do we do now? Watchful vigilance? Fumigate our entire apartment (which may not be affordable at this time)? Somewhere in between? Details inside, if you want more... [more inside]
