My eldest will be heading off to Portland this summer, with plans of attending the Paul Mitchell School downtown. I'm trying to get a sense of what our housing options are, so I can budget and she can plan (she really likes things to be planned out). My ideal would be something as dorm-like as possible-in the sense that there are staff onsite, or available much of the time, other students around, and perhaps some of the extra costs are already rolled into your rent (utilities, internet, etc). Hi all. For the past few years, I have been cutting my own hair with whatever scissors available, keeping it at a little shorter than shoulder. How should I cut my hair? Here are some (poor quality, sorry!) webcam pictures of my face: Front Profile Profile 2 Bangs, kinda [more inside]
People of color - what common health/beauty/hygiene axioms have you found not to work for you? Conversely, are there any regimes that you follow that aren't commonly seen as advice online? [more inside]
In the spirit of self-care in the dead of winter, I want to treat myself to some fancy soap. I am not really aware of high-quality hip-or-classic skincare brands that might have a bar soap (not liquid!) that fits what I'm looking for:
a unisex scent palette (I like savory, spicy, vanilla-y scents more than florals),
a bit of exfoliant [more inside]
I am 33, newly pregnant and most of my usual skin care products are not allowed (retin-a, green peels, botox etc) I am interested in purchasing one of the more expensive beauty lamps using Red LED lights (not hand held) but I would really like to hear some experiences before I shell out any big bucks. Any other pregnancy skin hacks are welcome! My budget is about $1300 a year... but I like to spend it on things that have visual longer lasting effects. Thanks in advance!
Hello. Female, 33, I've been using retin-a for years but never in the eye area. I would like to start using a very light .025 cream around that area but I'm really not sure yet, I've heard that it makes the area look crepey but that it then really improves. Have any of you beauties taken that plunge? What happened? How did it work for you?
I'm maid of honor in a wedding this Saturday. And I just realized I have a farmer's tan. How do I fix this? [more inside]
Hi all, I've been dealing with severe hair loss since the end of my Accutane course in 2010. It's now coming up on 2015 and I've lost probably 90% of my hair. [more inside]
I've always followed the same, for want of a better word, 'beauty' regimen and until now there have been no issues. But now suddenly, I am experiencing many appearance-related issues and having to rethink decades-old methods. My problems are with my hair and skin. Is this a thirties thing? I could do with some advice on how to look decent again, as well as some help dealing with the emotional repercussions of suddenly looking terrible all the time. [more inside]

I need a birthday gift for a glamourous 35 year old daughter of a close friend. Not a book nor a gift voucher, nothing for kitchen or home, more like beauty or fashion oriented of which she has a lot but never mind, it's the thought that counts -right? Something I can wrap and hand to them. She wears about a size 8. Budget of around $50 or £30-£40. I am really stumped-please help and thank you. And I did search previous questions.

I've just moved to Boulder from NYC and I'm looking for an experienced, no-frills men's barber that can handle a classic tapered haircut. I have had great Russian barbers in NYC but this is CO, and I can't find much. Looking for a barber that can handle an all scissors cut and one that is relegated to guard clippers. I'm willing to travel to a nearby area but would prefer not having to make the trip to Denver.
I read this poem years ago, and I'm pretty sure it's by Rimbaud, but I can't find it on Google. I think it starts out by describing a beautiful summer landscape, perhaps some wheat fields in France, and then it turns darker and describes dead young WW1 soldiers who lie there bleeding. Which poem is this?

Do you know a nail polish that is fee of chemicals like formaldehyde, etc.? I think they call it the 4 free or 5 free.........I tried the polish called "Butter" but it chipped right away. I'm willing to even just have 2 or 3 free if I can have a polish that does not chip the next day. I'm just trying to find something with "less" chemicals than the normal polish. Thanks.
We have booked our trip to London and Paris this summer-yay! My 17 year old daughter will be with us, and she loves everything related to fashion and beauty-style guides, shopping, makeup, museums, resale stores, all that. I don't love to shop, but am happy to include some in our trip. Any specific ideas for us in those two cities? [more inside]

I want to learn how to apply makeup. For fun, for the art of it, and so that I will have the ability to enhance my natural beauty when I choose to. But I'm a little worried that I'll end up feeling like I should wear makeup all the time. I'm also worried that I'll end up feeling ugly instead of beautiful - that I'll be taught to closely examine my face for all sorts of "flaws" that I never saw before and won't be able to unsee. I want to feel pretty, not the opposite! Do you have any suggestions for a "how to apply makeup" website/tutorial/resource that is fairly positive, down-to-earth, and not hypercritical? Any related advice?
There's a new version of the no!no! hair removal system, so I'm taking another stab at asking the hive mind for their opinion. The question was asked back in 2008 and 2004; back then it was new and pretty unknown and now the usual online sources have as many good reviews as bad. Five years later, I'm hoping there are enough MeFites that have tried it to get a better sense of how well it works. [more inside]
I am starting a blog which will feature photographs taken by my boyfriend and myself. He is a professional video cameraman and also an excellent photographer but neither of us are stylists. Can you help with some prop and set up ideas? [more inside]

So, every time I go looking for recommendations for makeup, etc. (here, and Makeup Alley, mostly), the majority of highly rated items are US products that are usually impossible or expensive for me to get, which is why I'd like your tips for your top-rated favorite bath and beauty items made-locally / available in Europe at reasonable cost. Maybe I can replace a few things, and find some new gems. [more inside]
For a bunch of reasons (some good, some bad) I have the next two and half months totally free. I don't have to do a thing, I have no reason to make any more money and I've got oceans of time, a nest egg of savings, and a gym membership. Previous times like this I've focused on making my skill-set or apartment better/fancier, but now I want to focus on myself. No creative projects, no learning and growing, just pure, unabashed vanity. What can I do in two and half months to get all kinds of pretty? Ideally during the day. [more inside]
It's getting cool again and I'm thinking that maybe I should start drying my hair before work so I don't show up with wet hair. But I hate hair dryers. Can I use something like this instead of a hair dryer? How do I do that without ruining my hair? [more inside]
I'm looking for books featuring old wisdom about skincare and haircare. Recipes and advice. I'm thinking orris root powder, muslin cloths and buttermilk, brush your hair 100 times before bed. From the English-speaking world or otherwise. Either written in previous centuries, 20th century, or recently. Even 1950s-60s if they don't rely too much on commercial products. There were a lot of books about grandma's beauty routine printed in the 1970s. Can anyone suggest some classics or particularly good ones? Similar to this. Note: there should be absolutely no mention of Dr Bronner's or the oil cleansing method.

I'm well-read but pretty uneducated when it comes to philosophy, aside from having a working knowledge of the Post-Structuralists. I'm looking for philosophical books (it doesn't matter it they're canonical or not--I have not read most of the canon, but I also haven't read a lot of related books) that explore one or more of these areas: beauty, art, or narratives. (I just started Lyotard tonight, so no need to suggest him.) [more inside]

My boyfriend has been away for four months, and will be returning in just over three weeks, i.e. a little earlier than planned. I haven't been completely slothful while he was away but I have fallen into some bad habits: late nights watching TV, drinking too much coffee, getting stressed about work, half-assing my workouts, moping around missing him. My skin is sallow, my midsection dough-y, and I feel like my light has dimmed a little. I really want to be at my best to welcome him home. So, what can I do/eat/get done to me to get my glow back over the next 21 days? Do you have a secret eating plan that gets quick results? A magical yoga routine? A miracle cream? [more inside]
"Beauty is the sister of vanity and the mother of lust". My translation in to French: "La beauté est la soeur de la vanité et la mère de la luxure." I originally saw this phrase in French as "La beauté est la sœur de vanité, et la mére et la luxure". So that would roughly translate as "Beauty is the sister of vanity and the mother of lust". I have also seen it expressed in English as "Beauty's sister is vanity, and its daughter lust." My translation would be: "La beauté est la sœur de vanité, et la fille de la luxure." I asked on Yahoo Answers if my grammar was correct, but one of the responses said it should be "la mère" and not "la fille". Hence, my question. Is it originally French in origin? And if so, is it mother of lust or daughter of lust? Either way my translation would be: "La beauté est la soeur de la vanité et la mère de la luxure." Or La beauté est la soeur de la vanité et la fille de la luxure. Are these two translations grammatically correct? Also, is La necessary before "beauté"?

Getting married in a few months, which means I want to start any facial/beauty regimens now. I don't usually do this stuff, so am entranced by the field of options. However, I know that this field contains the biggest BS factor of any out there. Please give me your best ideas of things that are scientifically proven to work, or that there is at least some data about why it works or would or wouldn't work. Please also tell me which of the things I'm considering looking at are drecht or dangerous crazytown. Help me not waste my money or wind up maimed. [more inside]

Please suggest to me the best DRUGSTORE makeups and hair products that will look the best, last the longest, will look good in pictures, and will be the most likely to survive a long day where I kinda need to look good the whole time. I don't have access to fancy pants brands, so this needs to be more budget "found at your local Shoppers Drug Mart" products. [more inside]
I bought a tool designed to get the last bits of foundation etc. out of bottles. Then I lost it. It's no longer available to buy in the UK, so I was wondering if there is something similar out there not necessarily designed for cosmetics - maybe a science or art tool? Ideally, a very small, angled rubber/silicone spatula. [more inside]

Looking for tips and tricks to come up with a skin care regimen for myself (31, F, with a beautiful baby). My goal is to get a glowing healthy skin in 3 months. The idea is to inculcate good habits, and hopefully some of them will stick for life. Any suggestions, beautiful men and women? Diet suggestions welcome, work out suggestions welcome, beauty tips welcome... basically all suggestions welcome :) You could also just share your inspiring story and that will keep me motivated enough ;-) Thank you!!
