Beatles Bootlegs?

What are the most interesting Beatles bootlegs? How do you get them? Are there any interesting "legit" bootlegs? For years I've been reading about bootleg recordings of the Beatles in studio. These aren't the "unplugged" recordings, or alternate takes that sound more or less the same as the ones we've all heard a million times on the records. They're slow versions of songs that were released fast, or versions done to a different beat -- versions that helped the Beatles figure out what their song wanted to be.

How can I hear these? Are they available in libraries? Are there safe sites from which to download them? (Yes, I'm aware that they are illegal recordings.) Are there any legally released bootlegs with significant differences from the original release? I don't need to keep them on my computer, I just want to hear'em.

Help! I need some Beatles!

Making a Beatles DVD from YouTube videos. Looking for suggestions for clips. For our family's second annual MAKE our Christmas presents party, I drew my sister-in-law. She's a huge Beatles fan. She owns a fair amount of albums and reads every book about the Beatles she can get her hands on, so I was thinking of grabbing a bunch of YouTube videos and making a DVD compilation. (I'm also going to make a few other things, just in case you think this is too weak from a maker standpoint.) I realize they won't be HD quality (to say the least), but she won't care. She's not web savvy, so she'll never find this stuff on her own and would just be happy to have it.

The question is, if I want to make a 30-45 minute DVD, what YouTube videos should I grab? I searched YT for rare Beatles stuff, but I quickly realized--being only a casual fan myself--I don't really know what would turn a die-hard fan on.

I thought this would be a fun beginning, and I think this Lennon song would be great too, but after that I'd love to hear your suggestions. Rare stuff in general would be great, but fantastic clips of their more familiar stuff would be fine too. I'm thinking I'd like this to be more music video than a behind-the-scenes documentary, but I'm happy to hear all vid suggestions.

She's the kind of person who would put such DVD on in the background and play it over and over. If you were her, what clips would you want on such a DVD?

Much obliged for your help.

Who'd you rather be; The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?

The song Gimme Sympathy by Metric has a line: "After all of this is gone, who'd you rather be; the Beatles or the Rolling Stones." What would you interpret that to mean? What characteristic of those bands is being contrasted here? Googling suggests that there was some Beatles/Stones dichotomy, but I'm not 100% clear on how it relates to that lyric.

I've sussed that the later lyric "play me something like Here Comes The Sun" is a reference to that Beatles song, so are The Beatles the "right" choice? Maybe?

Sorry for overthinking a plate of beans, but you know how when one line of a song sticks in your mind?

Full lyrics for the song are in the linked vid's description.

With the Girl Beatles?

I am looking for an album I found in a junk shop many years ago. The album was recorded by an all-girl quartet from Liverpool who cut an entire album of Beatles songs. They had a name that evoked the Fab Four (my recollection seems to be "She-Beatles" or "Beat-Elles", but nothing under either name comes up on Google) and the cover was an homage to With the Beatles. The liner notes on the back detailed the similarities between the Beatles and the all-girl band portraying them, but ended with a sentence like "...and they would like to be judged on their own merits". The album came out around '64 and was contemporary with the Beatles. Unfortunately, my Google fu is failing me. Can anyone out there help me ID this album/band?

What audio format for remastered Beatles listening on iPod only??

What audio format would you rip the recently remastered Beatles albums in for optimum iPod listening? Let's say you've got the recently released Beatles in Mono (or Stereo). Let's say you have to use iTunes and you only listen on your iPod, via Sony headphones or the car stereo. And let's say storage isn't an issue. What format would you rip them in? MP3 192kbps? AAC iTunes Plus? Apple Lossless?

I've seen parts of this question answered here, here, here, and here, but not specifically for strictly iPod listeners with something this good.

Maybe with just the iPod, you don't hear the differences anyway.

Is the 1967 program "Our World" available anywhere?

Where can one see/obtain the full version world's first live international satellite broadcast "Our World"? Does footage still exist besides the easy-to-find Beatles segment? More info on Wikipedia.

This show seems like it would be a treasure. I can find very little info about it. I'm coming up empty after searches for a copy of the whole program. I've looked on the usual video sites, Google, BBC and archive.org. I suspect part of the problem is the generic nature of the title, which is shared with other programs, and the overwhelming noise of the Beatles references. Nothing seems to have been issued for sale.

I must be missing something. Anybody have any clues?

What's the best game system for Rock Band?

The Beatles: Rock Band - help! So after reading this thread, I realize I must have this game. I want to pre-order ASAP so I don't end up waiting forever or paying a premium because it's completely sold out. The problem?

I've finally got to decide which game system to go with: Wii, X-Box, or Playstation. I swear I'm not trying to start a PC/Mac flame war - but I don't know the relative strengths/weaknesses of the systems, or even what qualities will be important to me. I trust the collective intelligence here - how do I pick?

Obviously, I'm not a gamer, but I've enjoyed Rock Band, Katamari Damaci and DDR in the past. I've had a great time playing the Wii but don't know how well Rock Band translates to that system. Your experiences, shopping regrets/triumphs, anything you wish you'd thought of sooner all welcome here.

Thanks!

When did the Beatles become the Best?

At what point did our culture decide that the Beatles were the best band ever? This isn't meant as snark — for what it's worth, I'm inclined to agree that the Beatles were the best band ever. And I realize that Music Isn't A Competition™, and there really isn't a way to be "best."

The point remains, though, that the Beatles have had more superlatives applied to them than any other band in (at least) the English-speaking world. More than that, these superlatives are applied across a range of cultures (young, old, high-brow, low-brow, a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll) that, if you take a step back, is frankly amazing. The Beatles are musical hegemons, and that's that.

So please take my question at face value: when did people start saying that the Beatles were the best band ever? When did this become an accepted tenet of Western culture? They were obviously a hugely popular band during their existence; did the idea that they were the best flow naturally from that while they were still together? Did, say, Sgt. Pepper immediately seal their legacy? Did it take some years after 1970 for the idea to really coalesce? Was it a product of the red and blue retrospectives, or music criticism's embrace of "top hundred" lists?

Take this broken grammar and learn to fly

GrammarFilter:

I was listening to "Blackbird" by the Beatles recently, and was struck by the line:

"You were only waiting for this moment to arise."

I was intrigued by the way the phrase "to arise" has sort of an ambiguous function here. Depending on how you read it, the sentence could mean either:

You were just waiting for the arrival of this particular moment, or

In order for you to arise, this moment had to come about.

In other words (if this makes sense so far) the predicate phrase "to arise" can have as its subject either "you" or "this moment".

Funnily enough, I heard another example of this kind of grammatical ambiguousness later that night, when I encouraged my wife to get in bed by herself since she was much more tired than I was at that early hour of the evening. She responded:

"But I need you to go to sleep."

Again, her sentence could have meant either "In order for me to go to sleep, I need you," or "It is important for me that YOU go to sleep" (even though that would be sort of a weird thing for her to insist on).

So I'm wondering:
Is there a specific grammatical term (or two different terms, maybe?) for the way an infinitive ("to arise," "to sleep," etc.) performs these two different functions in a sentence?

I recently saw the "Beatles LOVE" show in Vegas and was absolutely blown away. I now have the DVDA disc but am trying to identify all the songs mashed into it by Sir George Martin. Here's a clip I am particularly interested in.

Can someone please tell me exactly what song is mashed up at the 3:56 mark of the Beatles "LOVE" song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waHWwZsjvCk
Fake Beatle Filter: My friend dimly recalls (as he is wont to do) a mainstream movie with the following characteristics, centered around a fictitious British pop band. No, it's not the Monkees. - He believes there were flocks of girls chasing this pop band around, ala Beatlemania.
- One of the songs performed in the movie made it into radio airplay.
- He thinks it must have come out in the last ten years or so.
- He thinks it may have been a drama of some kind, as opposed to a spoof.
- He thinks the word "About" may be in the title, but we all know how that goes.

Any clue what it was?

No, not Yellow Submarine

So, we've just found out the kid we're cooking is a girl. Now, I'm tasked with the job I've had for the last 16 years: I have to come up with a signature song for the child. Here's the thing: My wife and I informally assigned each child a song from one of the Beatles. We started with the first one, my eldest son ("Beautiful Boy", Lennon), moved on to my youngest son ("I Will", McCartney), and ended up with my daughter's contribution ("Here Comes The Son", Harrison).

The problem I'm seeing right away is that, for consistency, I have to find something that Ringo Starr wrote that's appropriate for a little girl, and speaks to us in that perfect, sweet, little way that's going to match the baby.

Yea, yea, I know, "Hey, Ringo wrote a song!" He does seem to have a decently sized library of work out there, though, so I imagine something would work, right? I'm just not familiar with any of them.

Can someone make an educated suggestion on a few tracks?

(and, before anyone says it, I will not be looking for songs from Pete Best in a few years)

Covers of Beatles songs with Japanese Instruments, mostly koto and shakuhachi. They were featured as the BGM on the Japanese telivision program テリビチャンピオン２. Does anyone know any information?

"Let's bury the hatchet like the Beatles and the Stones..."

If you weren't dead in the 60s or know more than me, help me understand this "Beatles-Stones rivalry." Hopefully this isn't too much chatfilter: The best I can find on Google is a lot of passing references to it and a vague idea that it wasn't a rivalry between the bands like East Coast vs. West Coast hip hop, but a rivalry in the sense that people would argue that one band or the other was better and wouldn't listen to both. Also a little bit of wanking about how each band embodied a different social ethos something or other.

Importantly, from my born in 1985 hindsight it seems incredible to me that anyone would be on the side of the Stones, though I freely admit that I have no idea if the lasting greatness of the Beatles was as apparent when they were still active.

Cirque du Soleil kid-friendly?

Is the Cirque du Soleil production “Love” kid-friendly? My 2 daughters (5 and 7) have developed a taste for the Beatles, largely due to me constantly playing the “Love” CD in the car. It occurred to me that they might be ready to see the Cirque production, but I’m afraid that the show might not be appropriate for kids their age. My biggest concern is sensory overload: too loud, too many bright lights, explosions, pyrotechnics etc. (For reference, both kids are OK with the sights/sounds of movies on the big screen.) Has anyone seen the show with younger children?

I will be working behind a bar at a 60's themed art opening... So what should I wear? Longer version is that at the coffee shop I work at there's an art opening next friday with a 60s mod theme---with a beatles tribute band, of course---and I figure that I should dress up, but I have no idea how. I've never been great at coming up with costumes, nor was I around at the time.

So what easy, cheap costume ideas are there out there for me? I would prefer something that I'm not wildly concerned if it gets trashed over the night, too.

Has anyone never heard of the Beatles?

What percent of US citizens have never heard of the Beatles? I'm trying to settle an argument that was based entirely on speculation. It started off trying to figure out how many people don't like the Beatles but we settled on how many people have never even heard of them. It's a few days later and I'm still wondering and looking for some harder facts now.

A Hard Day's Font?

FontFilter. Identify the font used in this Beatles movie poster, please. Ignore the "Starring ..." bit and concentrate on the actual film title. And if you can find a cheap to free means of acquiring it, all the better.

Yeah theres this song called yellow submarine and they left ringo's singing on it!!11 lol

Songs with mistakes/bloopers left in? I can think of a couple of well-known examples of songs where the singer sniggers and almost flubs his line, but it's made the final edit: Macca on the word 'writing' in Maxwell's Silver Hammer, and Michael Stipe coming into the penultimate chorus of The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite.

Can the hive mind think of any other examples where a singer or musician blundered and it got left in?

Why doesn't Apple Computer just buy Apple Corp?

So Apple Computer is being sued again by Apple Corp, and it is likely that Apple Computer will settle. Question: Why doesn't Apple Computer just outright make an offer to buy Apple Corp? (And while they are at it, buy their music collection as well?)

Best Beatles Bio

What is the "best" Beatles biography in publication? Definition of "best" inside. I've been thinking of buying the new Beatles biography by Bob Spitz, but there is quite a deal of controversy regarding its accuracy. I'll probably read it anyway, but what book is considered the definitive or best bio of The Beatles to date? By "best" I mean not just accurate but also eminently readable, entertaining and comprehensive. I'm sure there are plenty of books revered for their encylopedic knowledge and accuracy of every minute detail but that also read like an accounting ledger. I'm not after that.

What on earth is that sound?

At the end of Abbey Road, John, Paul and George are trading guitar solos and the section ends with John playing a guitar part that sounds like a howling or blaring car horn. How did he get this sound? Is it feedback? Or is it maybe some kind of pedal effect?
