My family likes to do Christmas-time together, and a critical mass of us are in the Bay Area now. Where should we go and what should we do within a few hours of here? [more inside]
I have to move some stuff to a new (furnished) place on short notice, but I'm thinking that hiring movers would be overkill. Can't drive, so can't rent a truck, and my friend who could do it has to go out of town on the move-in date - what other options do I have? [more inside]
I have just moved to San Francisco after living overseas for 4 years. My old US license (Massachusetts) expired two weeks ago. I am required to get a CA license within 10 days, and I need a US license anyway for things like Scoot, which I'll be relying on for commuting. Please reassure me that I will be able to prove residency despite a "soft landing" housing situation meaning I don't have a lot of the traditional documentation. [more inside]
A milestone birthday is coming up. Would appreciate hive mind advice on celebrating solo. Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
Can anyone recommend a great divorce lawyer in the San Francisco Bay Area? (The couple involved have been married for 20 years and have no children, if that matters.)
Where should we go to have Beef Wellington? Accessibility to North Oakland (walking, BART, and driving are all viable options) and price are factors.
I'm looking for recommendations for a sex therapist in the Bay Area who specializes in female arousal and painful sex. Any recommendations?
Next year I want to get my taxes prepared by a new accountant. Looking for recommendations in the Bay Area! [more inside]
I've been half-assedly looking into joining a CSA/getting a box of produce weekly for a while now and really haven't made much head way on deciding. I'd love to hear personal recommendations or warning about being over-produced from Mefites. Worth it? What's your favorite farms or providers? [more inside]
What are the options for someone who wants to break into the stop motion industry. [more inside]
I'm trying to remember the author and title of a story (at least, I think it's a story). All I really remember is a parent, I think a dad but I could be wrong, sitting in traffic on a bridge. I believe there are at least two kids in the car, and there might be some kind of accident or disaster ongoing or impending, hence the traffic. Possibly earthquake related because I think it's in the Bay Area? I'm pretty sure it's the Golden Gate bridge? But it might just be a generic/elsewhere bridge and I made it the Golden Gate in my mind. It could also be an opening/early scene in a novel? But I feel pretty sure about the short story part, at least. I wish I remembered more, but I know this exists and it's driving me crazy. Short story with parent(s) in car with kid(s) on bridge, possibly set in the Bay Area: ringing any bells?
I want to go on a nice trip next weekend (March 4-6) with the person I'm dating, but I'm having trouble finding affordable, appealing, not-already-booked places that are within a 3-4 hour drive. Hope me? [more inside]
[Bay Area Public Transit Filter]. When I ask 511.org to show me transit from Palo Alto to Millbrae, it will not show me any Caltrains until Feb. 6th -- instead it will only show me buses. For example, here's it showing me only buses on Feb. 5th, whereas on Feb. 12 it shows me the right Caltrains. Has Caltrain screwed up its electronic schedule for the Super Bowl? [more inside]
My friend and I want to kayak this Sunday. What are your favorite Bay Area kayak spots? [more inside]
I don't have a car. I need to get to Palo Alto from the East Bay by 8:30 in the morning on a Saturday. I would prefer not to ride buses and trains for four hours. What should I do? [more inside]
A friend needs a good lawyer. [more inside]
I'm rich. Am I rich enough to live in the Bay Area? [more inside]
I'm going to a Golden State Warriors game next week. Ideally I want to stay at hotel nearby, hopefully park the rental car, and walk to the arena. Google Maps suggests this would not be a fun or plausible walk. Asking for local knowledge to confirm or deny... [more inside]
Super vagueness coming up but would be so worth it if anyone knew the answer. About 10(?) years ago, my husband took me to see a production of Shakespeare's Richard III, in Oakland. The troupe - or possibly just the way was written? - had only 3 actors, who did all the different characters. The actor who played Richard was a black man. [more inside]
I live in the SF Bay area and I might be getting some last minute time off to take a break. My ideal destination is somewhere where my husband and I can stay in a cabin with our two kids (2 years and 6 months) and take long walks through the forest. [more inside]
So, at the relatively advanced age of 36, I've realized I really enjoy (several subgenres of) electronic dance music, and that I also really enjoy dancing now that I'm actually bothering to learn. Where can a non-drug-using, generally introverted (but not shy) person go to indulge this newfound enthusiasm? [more inside]
Seeking recommendations for a boudoir photographer in the San Francisco Bay Area. Peninsula preferred but SF fine, too. Thanks!
There are lots of good "what to do if you have one day/one week in San Jose/San Francisco" questions, but what if you have one year? [more inside]
Calling Bay Area residents, how effed up is traffic going to be this weekend? [more inside]
What are the bars/live music venues in San Francisco and Oakland that have real, acoustic pianos on their stages? [more inside]
places to swim in the bay area? with some caveats. [more inside]
My partner and I (30s, no kids, both geeky/arty introverts) have a couple vacation days coming up. We'd like to take a short, low-hassle overnight trip somewhere, but we've done the Monterey thing multiple times, we don't want to go to San Francisco, and we aren't really into wine tasting. What else can we do that doesn't require a ton of advance planning or more than around 3 hours sitting in the car? [more inside]
I've got a job offer in San Rafael. Great! I live in San Francisco without a car. Boo! Since public transit outside of SF proper is a nightmare and buying a car is a deal-breaker for me, is 511 Rideshare a reliable option? [more inside]
I'm publishing a chapbook of poems this month, and I'd like to do a short reading when I visit the SF Bay Area at the beginning of August. I'm looking for a small, intimate venue where I can host this public event. [more inside]
I had a really hard week with being really fatigued and I want to go to a doc and get my thyroid checked again, plus I will need to re-up my Synthroid prescription soon anyway. I have a bunch of questions about process for this and also, are there methods for staying awake that I don't know about? [more inside]
What feels different between applying for tech jobs in San Francisco/Bay Area versus applying for tech jobs in Chicago? [more inside]
My kids have expressed interest in camping, so I checked out a car camping site today, and I'm pretty sure won't work for us. (Specifically, there was loud music being played on car stereos; in general, it seemed like the very low barrier-to-entry of car camping led to a lot of noise and general trashiness.) But my girls are hiking lightweights, and honestly I'm no hero either. Where could I take them camping somewhere with (at least!) toilet facilities, and, ideally, shower facilities, that requires a hike of around an hour to get to? Special super bonus - somewhere within an hour or two of Silicon Valley? Ideally in the redwoods? Thanks!!
I'll be flying out for 7-10 days in June to help my fiance find an apartment for us in the Bay Area, most likely Mountain View-ish. We're hoping for a July 1 lease, although we have enough flexibility to go a few days in either direction. Does it make more sense for me to be there May 29 - June 8 (last weekend of May and first weekend of June) or June 4 - June 15 (first two weekends of June) or some other set of dates? [more inside]
We're looking for somewhere to host ~60 people with catered food in early August. Nothing too fancy -- think more like a company picnic and less like a full-out gala. Preferably on the Peninsula or in South Bay. [more inside]
How does one navigate sex work or sexological bodywork as a female client in the United States? [more inside]
Is it possible to find a studio in SF proper for ≤$1650/mo? Where (and how) should I be looking? [more inside]
I just graduated from a web development bootcamp and am starting to look for my first job in the field in the Bay Area. I'm getting wildly different advice about how much money I should try to get paid. [more inside]
I will be moving to Palo Alto pretty soon -- likely living on or near Stanford campus. I can't drive and do not plan to have a car. How will that impact my lifestyle, and what should I do to mitigate the impact? [more inside]
Awesome food in the Bay Area? [more inside]
I want to investigate the cost of getting a small business liability policy, which is necessary for me to rent classroom space at nearby universities and local school districts. The requirement is usually a $1million policy with the school as an additional insured. I assume it will make the most sense to just get an annual policy, rather than event by event. Can you recommend reputable companies I should contact for quotes? [more inside]
In a few weeks I'm going to be in San Francisco for about 12 hours for a connecting flight. It will be just after a long no-shave camping trip and just before a set of client meetings that I have to be presentable for. At the moment I'm thinking about keeping the beard, so I'm looking for recommendations on shops (and specific barbers) who can take something from "just walked down from a mountain" scraggly to presentable without taking it all off. Flexible on location - anywhere from San Francisco down to Palo Alto. [more inside]
I've been at a Microsoft Enterprise Stack Ops position for 8 years. And while I'm good there and have solid credentials and experience, (1) I have relocated to the SF Bay Area where Microsoft isn't so popular and (2) I'm tired of Operations and the on-call responsibility. I would like to move on to other roles and career possibilities. Please share with me ideas and especially experience of doing that yourself! [more inside]
I'm going to be hanging out in the Bay Area for 5-6 days in late April/early May, for a mix of seeing family in Menlo Park and fun/touristing. I will probably stay with said family for 1-2 nights, but I want to be in closer to city things and public transit the rest of the time. Where should I stay, and while you're at it, what other activities should I consider? More about what I hope to do under the fold. [more inside]
I moved to the Bay Area a year ago and have no complaints about the weather thus far. On the other hand I really miss the Chicago breweries that aren't available in stores out here. I'd love to get my hands on some of their new releases, particularly their stouts and porters. Anyone know if it's legal and possible to ship beer to CA for personal consumption and how to go about it?
Yay! I'm getting gay married! We're looking for a venue that is, as stated above, affordable, and ideally unique (not super generic). I've looked at some previous questions and been asking around but hoping to get more ideas. We live in Oakland but would probably have a range from Marin to Santa Cruz to, I don't know, Livermore? [more inside]
I'm looking for artists reminiscent of P.J. Harvey, Shannon Wright, or Cat Power who regularly tour the Bay Area. Feel free to be as loose as you want with the comparison.
I'm in Berkeley right now (near the Ashby BART station) and am headed down to Menlo Park this afternoon/early evening (today, Friday). It looks like there are two ways I can go: through San Francisco via rail the whole way, or along the East Bay via rail and then via bus across the Dumbarton Bridge. What's the easiest and/or quickest way? [more inside]
I'm asking this on behalf of my wife. We moved to the Bay Area (East Bay) a few months ago because I got a job here in the tech industry. Given our costs, it's not really enough to support both of us on, but my wife is having trouble finding employment. [more inside]
Due to some longstanding issues with sleep and fatigue that I think could be related to sleep apnea, I'd like to have a sleep study. What are the differences/pros and cons of doing that at a hospital versus an unaffiliated "sleep center"? Experiences/thoughts on specific places to go in the SF Bay Area? [more inside]
We were planning to go to Dickens Fair at the Cow Palace tomorrow, but...y'know, Stormageddon happened. [more inside]
