I need a cross between a financial advisor and a therapist.

Having lived in the Bay Area "bubble" for many years, being reasonably (but not enormously) successful, and coming into middle age, I find myself more and more confused by the economic and social realities of how things are. I need a guide. [more inside]

Going to the SF CA DMV without an appointment.

My out-of-state driver's license expires mid-August. I'd like to a get a new one before then, but the "next available appointment" on the DMV website is at the end of August. How likely am I, in San Francisco, California, to be able to get this done without an appointment? What times should I go, to maximize this likelihood? [more inside]

Find me the Binny's of the West (Coast)

I moved to the Bay Area recently (San Mateo) and one of the things I've missed most from Chicago has been the amazing beer selection I was able to find at the local liquor chain Binny's. I've tried a couple of BevMo's and some smaller momandpop type places but I've yet to find a place with 4 rows of different beer plus coolers etc. which I could find in Chicago. I miss my selection! Does a place like this exist? Is there a secret bottle shop that I don't know about? Let me know where I can get my beer selection on!

Where to live in Bay Area - couple w/ commutes to Redwood City & Oakland

My boyfriend currently pays $1500/month for a studio in a less than stellar area of San Francisco (his car has been broken into 5+ times in the past year), and works in Redwood City. For various reasons now, he's sick of the city and wants to move. The idea is that eventually we would move in together. Since I work in Oakland, we're having trouble imagining where we might live that would make commuting at least not soul-sucking for both of us. [more inside]

Gardening Resources?

We just bought a house in the Bay Area with a small yard that I would like to maintain and improve on. I have the wonderful book Golden Gate Gardening, but I'm looking for a community to ask questions - preferably online? Things that might come up - diseases and how to treat them, plant ID, where to buy stuff at good prices. Local blogs, Facebook community pages, mailing lists etc might also be helpful. Offline resources are welcome, too, but I don't have a lot of free time to spend at club meetings etc. [more inside]

Stylish, Cheap, Earrings in the Bay Area. Go!

I feel naked without earrings. But... I have an earring retention problem! I am constantly losing JUST ONE earring, meaning that the only earrings I end up holding on to are the ones I don't like. Help me replenish my earring supply and support local artists! What are your favorite Bay Area spots for cheap (<$20 a pair), cute, locally-made earrings & accompanying jewelry? Any good street fairs that reliably sell cute stuff? Funky, big, unique, dangly, subtle, you name it! (I know I could go the Etsy route, but jewelry I buy online never looks like I think it will - I prefer in-person shopping.)

I just have my suspicions, is all

I'm looking for a relatively fine-grained source of health and environmental data for Contra Costa County, CA. County-by-county is no good, and even city-by-city isn't that great. Things to do on Christmas day in San Francisco

So my original Christmas day plans fell through, and I live 5000 miles from most of my family. I do have a brother who recently moved to San Jose, though, and we'd like to spend the day doing something together. We're both wary of bringing each other to friends houses (we're different kinds of people, move in different circles, etc) - so we'd like to try and find something fun and novel that we can go and do, just the 2 of us (though if it were something social in the sense that we may meet a bunch of strangers doing this thing, then that would be cool). Anybody have any ideas? We're also British. I don't know if this information will help you, but hey, there you have it. 2 British guys in San Francisco with no idea what to do on Xmas day. Hive mind, halp!

Bay Area Apartments: Explain like I'm 5

I have a job offer in San Francisco. I understand that renting there is more difficult than it's ever been. My requirements are: I want to be able to walk + bike + BART/Bus to work, which is around South Beach. Other than that, I am cool with East Bay, South, whatever. I could swing $2500-ish a month, but that is an upper boundary. Tell me about neighborhoods, tell me whether there exist "apartment headhunters" who could reliably do this for me, school me thoroughly. Thank you in advance.

Looking for leads for locally buying new/recycled bottles for gifts

I'd love to find the smaller bottles with orifice reducers (shake-to-drop) and/or droppers in the lids, and phenolic caps for the larger ones. Also neat whimsical labels would be cool but I'd be willing to make those myself and rubber cement them on. Best dry cleaner in Bay Area for a white satin designer suit?

I need to clean an expensive white Oscar de la Renta skirt suit that's lined in taffeta/tulle; it has some faint smudging here and there on the thick reverse silk-satin fabric. I wouldn't trust a normal dry cleaner with this, and don't know where else to go. Alex's seems exorbitant and gets awful reviews; Peninou seems doubtful as well; and I read somewhere about Crystal in San Mateo but don't have much to go on. Does anyone know a cleaner (preferably in San Francisco, but I can drive elsewhere if necessary) who works with designer items, maybe wedding gowns, who would know how to work with tricky white silk fabric? Many thanks!

Where should I live in the East or North Bay?

I'm relocating back to the Bay Area from NYC, and trying to figure out where to live; I work remotely, so commuting isn't an issue. I'd like to be somewhere sunny, walkable, safe (say, safe enough to walk alone at night as a woman from a BART station), and near a park or two, and to pay around $1400 for a studio or one bedroom. I know I like Rockridge, Elmwood, and North Berkeley, but I'm curious about the North Bay. What's it like in Santa Rosa, Mill Valley, etc.? I'm very liberal, vegetarian, etc., but I don't love the hippie flavor of Berkeley or all of the students. I live in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, now, and love it-- just want to be closer to family, with better weather and better air, hence the Bay Area. I don't think I can afford to live in SF, and I prefer the greenery in the East Bay. Very curious about other parts of Oakland. Thanks for your advice!
