My 18 year old son went to Express Oil Change to have a new battery put in his 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. His battery was dead and when jumped off, it would not hold a charge. They put an MTP-65 Interstate battery in and charged him $146 for the battery alone. With installation, charging system testing fee, and taxes, the total cost was $208.93. Does that sound high? I was expecting to pay half of that.

My Aspire 3680 (crappy laptop PC) doesn't want to hold a charge anymore, with either battery. How do I determine if it's my laptop, my batteries, or my charger? (I have a VOM and know how to use it).

Where can I read about exciting or revolutionary advances in battery or energy storage technology? What is on the horizon that might actually see the light of day? I'm interested in all applications, but most especially computers and cars.

I have a 850va 425w UPS battery backup with only 2 outlets. There is a small server, speakers, home theater projecter, lcd monitor, and router connected to a power strip. The power strip and a desktop plug into the UPS. Is this setup safe? I am concerned about short 1-second interruptions caused by bad electrical connections rather than power outages.

Battery For Aging Laptop: OEM or 3rd Party?
I need a new battery for my four year old Mac powerbook (old one discharges within 60 mins). Like the original, it lost its endurance after 2 years and currently discharges after 60 mins of use.
There are few OEM batteries still around for this thing (though I did find one on eBay). But it occurs to me that while no Apple battery could possibly be fresh at this point, the 3rd party replacement ones MIGHT be more recently made. Though I'd usually hesitate to go with a 3rd party manufacturer on something like this.
FWIW, it's a Powerbook G4 15", and battery is A1045/A1078/A1148

Sometimes, my iPhone 3G usage statistics are totally out of line with my actual usage and the battery is drained accordingly. This doesn't seem like a settings issue but rather some application or service getting "stuck" and not turning off when the phone is locked. Any ideas what I can do to address this? [more inside]

for $49. Amazon sells a third party replacement made by Hi Capacity
for about half the price. There are no user reviews for the cheaper batteries. Is the $49 Canon battery a waste of money?

So the modern practical uses for these are in guitar effects, alarm clocks, and smoke detectors. leave your effects on and they die in a couple of hours. as a backup to your alarm clock, it dies in four or five hours (not even powering the LCD). i have no idea how long these things last in a smoke detector, but my guess is the next housefire and i'm a dead man. why do these batteries suck so bad? why do we still use them? why hasn't science come up with anything better?

I need to buy a new battery for my Dell Inspiron 6000, and I've found two options: A
. Obviously A is more expensive, but it has a higher mAH. I by default prefer the longest battery life possible, but I also don't know jack about laptop batteries. Searching the google has given me only whiffs and bits of information. Tell me hive, is 8000mAH better than 6600mAH enough to warrant $20 more? What can I expect from each, very roughly, in terms of hours of continuous use between charges?
Also, feel free to inform me that A and/or B are terrible sites I should not buy from.
