Is this laptop battery a ripoff, and how can I be sure? I bought a third party battery for my Macbook. It looks like the original 45Wh battery, but Coconut Battery (and the appropriate ioreg command) report the 'design capacity' as lower than it should be. [more inside]
I have a 1979 Ford F100, which once belonged to my father. Since he passed away, it's served as a backup vehicle for an array of relatives, and now it's my turn. Yesterday, I got into the truck and turned the key, and I heard a single "clunk" (not a click-click-click), as if something started moving and then froze up. I tried again, with the same result. The next time, I got a kind of whirring sound, like something spinning free. It's a continuous whirring, rather than a series of attempts to catch. Lights and radio work fine. Jumping it didn't help. I didn't try to roll it off, because I'm loathe to leave it at the bottom of the hill in my slighty sketchy neighborhood; I'll probably try that this weekend, when I can get some help. The battery is relatively new. It started easily up until yesterday. [more inside]
Seattle area telecom: Can anyone suggest a battery distributor/warehouse that stocks deep cycle lead acid batteries of the type suitable for a DC UPS? Shipping costs on these are very high so we would prefer to buy from a dealer somewhere along I-5 in the area from Bellingham to Olympia. We're looking for 6V 220aH T105 (golfcart type) and AGM 12V 120aH batteries.
Asking for a friend: "I've got a 2005 Corolla. That year/make is one of those selectively affected by the Toyota recall re: random stalling. I never received a notice that my car was affected, but I did buy (and transfer the title) fairly recently. Anyway, my car stalled--basically on the highway at rush hour..." [more inside]

I fell asleep a few nights in a row with my Macbook running on battery. I never did this before and now the laptop crashes erratically whenever running on battery, even when mostly at full charge. I assume the events are related, and that this may be analogous to driving your car until it runs out of gas: bad for the car. Advice? Did I ruin my battery? Is there a fix I'm overlooking?

I used to have a Sonic Impact T-Amp. It was incredible - a great-sounding battery-powered amp with an input for iPod/CD that could drive big speakers at volume. Mine broke and I think I might have thrown it away, which I regret. But in the meantime, is there something similar on the market? A small, great battery-powered amp? I'm based in the UK but would order from the States if needed.
It seems the ac-adapter plug thingy (i.e. the cigarette lighter) doesn't work in my car. I suspect a blown fuse. I have neither the time nor the inclination to take it in to get fixed if I can do it myself. Halp? [more inside]
Do you trust third-party batteries for your cellphone? Specifically I'm thinking about picking up some spare batteries for the HTC Evo, but I've been a non-removable battery phone user for so long that I don't know if I really should stick to the manufacturer's branded batteries or can safely save some money and look elsewhere (like a Seidio, for example).

Battery shelf manufacturers: I need links to manufacturers of steel battery shelves for large DC UPS applications, for use with AGM VRLA lead acid batteries such as 2V 600aH to 1200aH and 6V 220aH to 600aH+ sizes. Batteries will be Rolls or a competitor. The shelves should knock down into something that can be flat packed and reassembled at an installation site. Features for earthquake bracing and shock mounting are also useful. Where do the US RBOCs buy their shelves?

Help us diagnose our Ford F150: what could be draining down the (new) battery overnight? We're suddenly seeing apparent battery drainage in our pickup truck, a 1994 Ford F150. Though the truck starts up fine, the dashboard battery gauge reads low immediately upon ignition, the windshield wipers are sluggish, and the dashboard lights are dim. We thought the old battery was likely dying, so we had it replaced with a new battery... but that hasn't solved the problem. [more inside]
I would like to learn more about large-scale UPS systems, particularly the battery strings used in traditional RBOC/Telco applications. These are the sort of beasts that use huge strings of 6V 220aH deep cycle batteries, or even large numbers of 2V 400aH batteries on very strong earthquake-resistant shelving wired up to create a 48V mega-battery. Can anyone point me to the most definitive reference materials on the subject?
