I have an older MacBook I use when travelling (four or five times a year), and then the odd occasion when I am away from my office desktop. The battery on the MacBook died a few months ago, and I am guessing partially because I haven't been using it frequently enough. I am hesitant to replace the battery, figuring the same thing will happen again, is that right? Is there a downside to not having a working battery on the computer itself? And lastly, is there a problem with leaving the dead battery in the computer?

Is my laptop's battery life normal for it's age? It's used and I know next to nothing to laptops. More inside.

I am really wary about buying a laptop with a non-user-replaceable battery. Opinions on this? How painful/possible is it to get such batteries replaced when they fail?

My dream device has only one function: you type on it, and it saves your text to be downloaded into a laptop later. It does this for a week without being plugged into the wall. Does it exist?

The battery in my IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad Z60t went out of warranty 4/29/07. When I woke up today, the machine says "Irreparable damage to the battery has been detected. Replace the battery with a new one." Is it really damaged? Could it be a broken sensor? Some kind of software glitch? Is this typical? Is there a better alternative to the
$159 replacement?

I'm considering buying a new laptop battery and after scouring the web and usenet, I can't find any definitive word on aftermarket batteries.
This thread essentially says they're both good and bad, as does
this one.
I've made a lot of purchases of refurbished equipment, but batteries have always been something I'm wary of. I've seen pretty solid recommendations of
igo.com and
Eagle Imports (whose batteries completely dominate the
ebay laptop battery market), where they frequently sell for less than half the normal retail cost.
