"I am Batman"

Halloween costume: "Casual Batman". Help me come up with bat-gadget ideas! The idea is that Batman woke up this morning and just didn't feel like giving 100%. I'm wearing a Batman mask, a cape, and a hoodie that I have that has the bat-symbol on it. From the waist down I'm going to wear khakis and slippers (casual). I'm having a hard time coming up with bat-gadget ideas!

The only thing I've made so far is a bat-a-rang bottle-opener out of an old machete blade that I had kicking around the garage... Any other "casual-Batman" gadget ideas floating around out there?

Give me your comic book tips, tricks, and resources

Please help me fuel my new-found obsession with comic books! What are some of your favorite recommended reads, as well as comic book resources, tips, and tricks? In the past few weeks I've become very interested in comic books. Not just the stories themselves, but the whole culture, history, and industry. This is my first real exposure to the world of comic books besides reading Watchmen and a few other graphic novels a couple years back. (For reference, I find that I'm more drawn to the DC Universe, and Batman specifically.) Given this new obsession, how can I use all the resources available to me to best enjoy the comic reading experience?

I'm open to all your tips and tricks of the comics world (or reading recommendations), but I do have one thing I'd specifically like to find: an RSS feed, or more ideally, an email newsletter that would keep me updated on all the new stuff that's coming out in each week or even further out.

Also, are there any good comic-related apps for the iPhone? I'm really loving ComicBookDB for its comprehensive information, but it would be great if there was something like this that was specifically made for the iPhone.

Video game "playing cars" is fun!

My son and I love playing in the cars on Lego Batman: The Video Game (Wii). What other "vehicle toy" games are there? It's a lot of fun to have your characters jump into the cars on Lego Batman and just drive around, running amok, especially 2 players. Smashing into things, people, and each other. Trying to tip over or bounce as high as we can, etc! Just "play", not racing or trying to get anywhere, though that could potentially be fun too as long as fairly low on the competitive/difficulty ladder. Easy controls (at least for the basics) a must.

Split-screen/"second-person" perspective a la Mario Kart isn't necessarily a dealbreaker but definitely isn't preferred. That sort of game is fun, but "play" really needs a shared context where both players can be about equally seen in a single view. Likewise, not having a timer/other "arbitrary" interruptions is a plus. It's really cool and funny when you on occasion run into something that blows up, so destruction/EXCITEment would be good.

Have a Wii, so Wii or GameCube (including VC or WiiWare) would be preferred; might be talked into a PS2 since I already "need" one and it's always nice to have an excuse.

HOW IMAXED THE WATCHMEN IS

Has anyone seen both the IMAX and general-release versions of Watchmen? -> I'm trying to decide which version to see and searching Google for direct comparisons, clearly stating how the IMAX version differs from the large-release version, is, well, let's just say it's not something that runs like clockwork.

SPECIFICALLY:

was the IMAX version recomposited to fit the IMAX aspect ratio (a la Apollo 13 IMAX)?,

OR

was the film been treated more like the recent Dark Knight film?

The Dark Knight II Electric Boogaloo (or whatever the official title may be) was shown in the standard wide screen ratio until certain set-piece FX sequences were presented in the IMAX format and once the set-piece sequence was completed the film returned to the standard ratio.

Please to hope me, film geeks!

Why did the Joker get the money?

The Dark Knight filter: spoiler inside. Why was the Joker given half the mob's money in The Dark Knight?

I've seen this movie a couple of times now, and one question's been bugging me - why is the Joker given half the mob's money? The scene early in the movie at the meeting with the mob bosses makes it pretty clear that the Joker is supposed to kill Batman in order to get the money. Yet, immediately prior to the Joker standing with the pile of money we hear him on TV saying that he didn't want to kill Batman and tried to get others to kill Coleman Reese to prevent him from revealing Batman's identity.

So what gives? My best theory is that he just took half after getting the location of the money from Lao after he sprung him from jail. But immediately prior to the burning the of the money, one of the mob bosses seems to congratulate him, making it seem like he'd earned his half. Explanations, anyone?

Penny for your Bat-Thoughts?

Why does Batman keep a giant penny and a huge replica of a Tyrannosaurus Rex in the Bat Cave? Very often, when you see depictions of Batman's hideaway, it includes a giant penny (sculpture?) and a (possibly life size?) T Rex just sitting around. Why is this? I know he's a detective. I know he's got some astounding computer/information gathering equipment that helps his detective work but... what's with the penny? And the dinosaur?

Batman & Neal Adams for Cheap?

I am trying to find out if if DC comics is sooner than later (if ever) going to release the Batman and Detective comics runs from artist Neal Adams era in the 60s and 70s. I know they have released expensive colored hardbounds but I am hoping for some cheap thick black and white Showcase versions like they are doing for other titles...I know they do the worst titles first...but even Marvel is releasing their good stuff in the Essential series. Any news would be good. Thanks.

There are six-- I mean, five replicants.

I have a plot question concerning the movie The Dark Knight. If you haven't seen the movie, you won't be able to answer my question, so there are definitely spoilers inside. At the end of the movie, when Gordon and Batman are discussing how to cover-up Two-Face's crimes, Gordon mentions that five people were killed by Two-Face, including two cops. The problem for me is that I only count three people killed by Two-Face, one of which is a cop. The cop in the bar was killed, and the mob boss and his driver. That makes three. Ramirez, the other crooked cop, wasn't killed, as far as I can tell, because the flipped coin came up clean. So even if you count Harvey Dent as one of the killed (which doesn't seem right to me), that leaves one person unaccounted for; two if you don't include Dent. Can anyone help me figure out who the missing people are? Thanks.

How Realistic Are Two-Face's Wounds?

A question about physiology and The Dark Knight. (Beware, here there be spoilers.) While I was expecting them to introduce two-face, I was not expecting them to show us the full extent of the damage to his face, and I so was not expecting it to be that grisly. Yeesh. It's been haunting me, that face. And, it has made me curious.

Are two-face's wounds at all plausible? Could someone be burned so badly that they looked like that (with the tendons and muscle exposed) and still be functional at all? Would an eye exposed like that be able to work as well as it seems to in the movie? Would speech be possible? Could someone live for a considerable amount of time in that condition, while not seeking treatment?

I know it's just a movie (and one about a man who dressed like a bat, to boot), but I'd like to know how realistic this aspect of it is. Thanks!

Holy Hand-out Help, Batman!

I'm looking for a high-quality scan of a single page out of any Batman or Superman comic book or graphic novel that I can print out off of the internet. My google-fu is apparently not up to snuff. Black and white would probably be preferable to color since I'm looking for something I can print out and photocopy as part of a high-school hand-out for writing action scenes in film. But it needs to be legible and print-outable for free. I only need one page, but it has to be decent quality.

The optimal page would be from an action sequence with both pictures and words.

Thank you for your help!

Batman TV fonts?

Looking for a font similar to the one used in the 1966 Adam-West-era Batman tv show opening credits; any ideas? So I'm in the preliminary stages of a little fan film project, and would like to do some opening credits in the style of the old Batman series. I'm guessing the original credits were done by hand as needed, but thought somebody might have created an homage font or that something similar existed out there. Anybody know of something like this?

Here's some samples:
The top of this page has examples from the standard opening of the show.

And here's one from the beginning of the episode (after the opening credits). It looks slightly more refined, and I'm thinking it might actually be closer to a standard font. (Maybe.)

I've tried Identifont and come up empty. Am also planning to hit some Batman fan forums, but thought I'd start here with my AskMeFi buddies.

There's a Batman panel I have a clear, but possibly flawed memory of.. where is it from?

Likely written well after, but taking place shortly after The Killing Joke, I have a clear image of Barbara Gordon, in the hospital, talking to Batman (or possibly Bruce Wayne), realizing she'll never walk again, never be batgirl again, that this incident has derailed her entire planned existence, and essentially saying something to the effect of "I've heard when the police pulled up, you were standing there laughing with the man who did this to me, and I wanted to know.. were you laughing at me?"

Where is this from? It can't just be in my head, can it?

Your peanut-butter-eating days are over, miscreant

Obscure children's fiction filter: What's this DC superhero book I read in the 1980s? I read this book in the 80s about either Batman or The Flash--I can't remember which--which had the superhero trying to figure out how things were being stolen from somewhere (a museum? I don't remember). If I'm remembering right, part of it involved the villain sneaking through the city by way of manholes, and either the villain or the superhero could run exceptionally fast and had to eat a lot of peanut butter as a result. (I think it was probably the villain; I seem to remember the superhero finding empty peanut butter jars for awhile and wondering what was going on.) Sure, it sounds perfectly ridiculous, but it is superhero fiction.

The book, if I'm remembering right, was small: maybe 4" x 5"; as a kid I remember thinking it was sized right (?). (And yes, I know it's odd that I can remember the small size but not even who the book was about ... I'm willing to accept that I can't find the book again because I'm conflating several storylines into one.)

The book struck me as somewhat dark at the time but I'd like to track it down and read it again just for kicks.

... Also/alternatively, is there some authoritative source about children's books DC has published? I'm at a loss on how to even begin searching this one; freeweb search engines are being no help whatsoever.

What was the comic where DC superheroes appeared as babies?

I remember reading as a young kid - in about 1985/6 - a comic book starring the cast of the Justice League of America as babies or toddlers. I'm not sure of the specifics, like if it was actually the JLA, but it definitely had cute little baby versions of all the favourite DC staples: Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman and the Flash.

Does anyone else remember this? Am I imagining the whole thing? What was it called and where can I find a copy? I don't recall much more, but I'm fairly sure that they were alternate baby versions of themselves, not shrunk by a baby ray or anything. That is, the plot didn't make them babies, they just were. They also weren't 'younger' versions of themselves, just 'baby' versions. I realise that distinction might not be clear, but I think you'd know what I mean if you'd seen it.

Please help me track down this tiny piece of my childhood. This is my first Ask Metafilter question, so I wanted it to be important.

Dark Knight Calisthenics?

What would Batman's daily workout be? This question originally stems from a debate with a friend, but has since become a miniature project. I thought I'd consult AskMeFi.

What exercise/diet regiment might Batman/Bruce Wayne employ to achieve that crime-fighting physicality and physique? You can be as creative as possible and focus on whatever aspect(s) you deem most important.

Bonus points for:
1. Basing your answer in the comic books/graphic novels/movies/animated series. You could even reference specific training Christian Bale went through to get in shape for 'Batman Begins' (I haven't been able to find this information, though).
2. Keeping your answers specific and based in reality. My friend and I might adapt your answers into a real-life summer workout. I'm serious.

How would one become Batman?

Let's say you wanted to actually BE Batman... In an earlier question, someone asked whether Batman had any superpowers, and the consensus was essentially that he did not, but instead had genius-level intellect and a mastery of a simply enormous set of disciplines.

Which makes me wonder - what exact disciplines, specifically, does Batman have at his disposal? Everyone says he's a master martial artist - but are there any specific types, schools or techniques that've been specifically attributed to him in the comics? Karate? Tae Kwon Do? How many, exactly, has he actually used or been said to know? Any by-name specialties he's been specifically credited with, be it in forensics, acrobatics, etc.? If one actually WANTED to be Batman, say they had from about the age of ten to do so (that's when the Waynes were murdered, right?), is there any way they could do even a tenth of what Batman does by the age of, say, 27? (Was that when the Year One stories take place?)

Don't worry, I'm not some thirteen-year-old trying to "be" Batman, I'm just intensely curious about this question.

Help me find a Batman shower curtain... My roommate and I have wanted a Batman shower curtain for a few years now, and we've been keeping our eyes peeled, but to no avail.

The curtain, in our heads, would be solid black with the big black-and-yellow Batman logo in the middle.

Has anyone out there seen such a thing?

does batman retire?

Are there any Batman comics dealing with the wane of his days and/or the actual retirement? There're comics about the beginnings of Batman's career, and there're ones about his clumsy beginnings, and then even more about Batman in peak form.
The Dark Knight Returns even covers a resurrection of the cape and cowl.

It's mostly out of interest, but I may end up working it into a personality analysis paper.

Maybe.

Reading in dreams

Can you read in your dreams? This ask.mefi question reminded me of something that came up a while ago with me and my friends:

Years ago, I saw a Batman Animated Series episode where Batman deduces that he's stuck in a dream by the fact that he can't read. My friends thought this was perfectly plausible, but I know that I distinctly remember reading (real English words, mostly signs and large-print headlines etc) in my dreams.

Now, I'm left handed, so that might have something to do with it, but it seems like a rare ability.

Any experiences with reading in dreams?
