Don't Leave Me Hot and Hanging

How do I wire my new bathroom exhaust fan? The old fan has three functions (fan, light, nightlight) and therefore connects to a triple switch on the wall. It also means that there are two runs of wire to it. The new fan has only two functions (fan, light) and therefore only needs one run of wire. How do I wire this thing up; what do I do with the extra run of wire? [more inside]

Everything But the Cliche

For financial and quasi-environmental reasons, I live in a studio apartment with its own bathroom but with a shared kitchen down the hall. It's great except for one thing: I'd love to use my bathroom sink for kitchen-ish purposes, but the faucet and drain are too shallow. Is there anything I can attach to the faucet that'll give it a bit more flexibility - without breaking my lease or calling the plumber? [more inside]

Ideas for retro bathroom stall photoshoot

I'm working on a photography experiment with a friend. We'd like to shoot me dressed in some nice-looking monochromatic getup inside a retro bathroom stall. We've got the wardrobe down, but we're lacking on actions: what interesting actions can I pretend to be doing in a bathroom stall that would appear edgy-but-not-vulgar? [more inside]

I hate them.

At some of the older buildings on my campus the men's room has a very strange design to the urinals. They are sort of soup-bowl in shape (a gross analogy, I agree), there are no dividers between them, and unless you take steps to prevent it your equipment is fairly visible to anyone who walks in the door as you're using them. This seems odd to me. I think the buildings that they're in were built in the 70s or 80s... is there a design reason / philosophy behind the worst bathrooms I've ever used in my life? [more inside]

Why won't my paint stay attached to the wall?

Need to replace laminate countertop

Most people want to salvage the laminate, I want the opposite. I have a bathroom vanity that is 50"x22" with sink. Three sides have tile on them as backsplash. How do I remove the laminate without wrecking the plywood underneath? I've heard soaking it in tolulene or lacquer thinner or acetone works but wouldn't that soak the wood as well and swell/ruin it (The acetone would evaporate quick though)? I used to be a floor layer so I'm thinking heat. Would a seam sealing iron work? It's basically a flat rectangular iron that can go from low to very high heat. It's safe to use on underlay so I assume plywood could handle it. I don't care about salvaging the laminate top. I just need to put a new one on and I heard that sanding and putting laminate on laminate is asking for trouble. Although I have contractor friends that with the owners permission have used liquid sandpaper and put it on existing laminate and have not had problems, 5-10 years on.
