One of the floortiles in the bathroom cracked. How do I fix this? [more inside]
Can I fix this myself? It's mostly intact except for some smallish chips. I have zero experience with tile work.
How can I control hot water to a bathroom faucet (tap)? [more inside]
I thought I knew how to clean bathrooms? But my new bathroom is a dust-sink, hair-trap, and I can never seem to get the porous white sink, tub, and toilet to appear clean, despite frequent cleaning. Looking for practical hacks or product recommendations from people who have similar vintage or antique bathrooms. [more inside]
How can we solve our older cat's sudden obsession with urinating all over the house? [more inside]
We are buying a house -yay! But the house needs renovation work done - eek! While we have previously owned a house, it was 10 years ago, in another state, and never had any major renovations. We are scheduled to close on April 30, so we are trying to figure out what kinds of professionals we need and how to find/hire them. [more inside]
I just moved into an apartment a month ago. The bathtub, bathroom sink and kitchen sink drain slowly (but eventually). I don't remember whether they were slow when I moved in. I didn't have a hair strainer on the tub for the first few days so it's entirely possible it's my hair causing the backup (though that doesn't explain the kitchen sink). Is this my problem to fix or theirs? It's getting progressively worse. [more inside]
I am renting an apartment with what I consider to be a relatively simple bathroom. While the walls and floor are tiled, there is no barrier separating the shower from the sink and toilet. Apparently the correct terminology for this is a "wetroom". And it does get very wet. I would like to be able to go to the toilet without wading through a wet toilet floor, so I need to jimmy up a simple, effective, hygienic solution. [more inside]
So, apparently some manufactorers make it so that you can easily remove the flow restrictor from a lot of shower heads, increasing the flow so that it has good pressure.... Uh, which ones? Our current showerhead looks god awful but my husband won't let me replace it unless I ensure it will be as high pressure as our current crap one. [more inside]
Please help me find a non-slip, non-skid mat for the bathroom floor so I can get out of my shower safely while on crutches. [more inside]
We have very hard water and it has a tendancy to stain stuff pretty quickly. The area of the sink and the tub just below the faucets are an endless battle. The only thing that has ever been able to get those stains out has been bleach, but now the bleach has only made things worse because they stain even MORE quickly. It really looks terrible. Help me fix my sink and tub so that we don't look like Grubby McSlobbersons. [more inside]
We just found a great place in our apartment to hang this Vintage Color Wheel canvas, but not sure it's the best place given the humidity from the shower. I can only find warnings against mixing oil paintings or acrylic paintings and humidity. This isn't exactly high art, so I'm not as sure that we should avoid hanging this in the bathroom. At the same time, I don't want to wreck this awesome find. Do you think we'd do much damage if it was hung in our relatively small bathroom?
Need advice on arrangements for my folks' dog while I'm at work. [more inside]
I have a bathroom that has had some serious moisture issues over the years. I recently installed an exhaust fan and that's mitigated the problem somewhat. My big issue is this: the wall paint (semi-gloss latex) is peeling off where the wall and tile meet. It started bubbling up here and there and I made the mistake of pulling on a little piece today and the paint came off like peeling an orange. I need to repaint several of the walls in the bathroom while trying to prevent the paint from peeling off again. How do I seal the walls or at least where the wall and the tiles come together to keep the moisture out? [more inside]
I tried my best to Google this but with no luck. I'm not sure if this a state law thing but the event I'm attending is in California. Let's say you were attending an event (at a convention center) where the attendees were disproportionately one sex rather than the other. Can the venue, or the event organizers, change a majority of the women's restroom to men's or vice versa? An example: Can the organizers of MenCon 2014 (where the attendees are 98% men) change most of the women's bathrooms to men's for the run of the event? thanks in advance!
I live in a 1.5 bath NYC condo. The half-bath is large enough to accommodate installation of a small shower stall, without requiring relocation of the existing sink and toilet. I've received approval from the building's board to begin this process and the owner of the vacant commercial space below me will allow access for the simple drain installation but, before I retain an architect ($$), I would appreciate input, in general, on what I can expect from the city permit process (permits required, cost, time) and advance notice of any other issues I should be aware of before embarking on this road? Thank you.
What is happening to our bathroom drywall? [more inside]
On the most recent episode of Homeland, a female shut the bathroom door during use, which allowed an intruder to make a clean exit. The people I watched this with were baffled as to why she would close the door when she was home alone. This is something I do 90% of the time, and after talking to some other people I'm definitely not alone in doing this. I'm just curious if this normal, a guy or girl thing, something cultural? I guess for me it just feels odd to have the door open while in the bathroom.
What is the best (most hygienic/cleanest/least gross) way to dispose of tampons at home if you can't flush them? Is there a specific type of bag for this? [more inside]
He urinates in the bathroom walls and uses the near by hand flush to wash it off. I have to shower next to this wall everyday. Details inside. [more inside]
What are these tiny worms I found? Are they dangerous? And how to I get rid of them? [more inside]
I live in a co-op building (built in 1960) and the bathroom has a metal grille covering the bathroom vent. I'd like to replace the old, nasty grille with a nice stainless steel or brushed nickel version, but my google-fu is not turning up a suitable replacement. Anyone know where I can find one or have one made? [more inside]
Our small main floor 2-piece bathroom has had a musty smell for the last couple of months. We can't seem to identify the source and aside from the smell there is no sign that anything is wrong. We had a plumber in and he spotted a very small amount of (orangy coloured) mould inside the toilet tank, but even after cleaning that up with MoldEx the smell has not abated. What could it be? [more inside]
I recently moved. The only light in my bathroom is from five of these bulbs (with the smaller bases -- I don't know exactly what they're called) over the medicine cabinet. I'm wondering if there are nice, bright, LED (full spectrum?) SAD-fightin' bulbs, ideally with warm white light, that I could screw in in their place. Any additional brightness would be welcome to help my brain as I get ready for the day and the year gets darker (I have to get up very early for work). Thanks very much!
My wife and I are buying an old house in which the bathroom just has a tub, not a shower. We'd like to redo the bathroom and put in a proper shower before too long, but in the meantime we'd like to set up an all-around shower curtain and rig up a shower as inexpensively as possible. [more inside]
I want to attach a suction-cup soap dish in the shower. Suction cups don't work on my tiled bathroom walls. [more inside]
My bathroom sink smells after I take a hot shower, any ideas why? [more inside]
I have anxiety when it comes to doing #2. I was recently walked in when doing so at a previously safe spot. Now, I don't know if I can feel comfortable going poop again at the university. [more inside]
I tried my first bath bomb/epsom salt mix a few days back and I loved it, but I wanted more. I want my tub to temporarly become a high powered jacuzzi. Where can I find ( or how can I make) the most aggressive, bubbly, foamy, churningly tingly bath time additive?
We fell in love with some large travertine tiles but I'm worried that they may not be appropriate to the size of our bathroom. The large-sized wall tile examples I see online are all in big rooms with soaker tubs or oversized walk-in showers. I can't tell if this is because large tiles aren't suitable to "real world" bathroom sizes or if these floor-to-ceiling applications just showcase the tiles better. [more inside]
My existing claw foot tub doesn't fill deep enough. I would like to replace it with a deep soaking tub, of course for the best value possible. Give me your ideas please. [more inside]
Need lots more storage in my cramped bathroom, but don't know how. Would prefer something that works well and looks nice, and doesn't require drilling or otherwise altering the walls. More details and pictures too after the break [more inside]
When our bathroom renovation is complete this week, our house will have tile and grout for the very first time: white subway tile with light gray grout on the shower walls and porcelain faux slate with dark gray grout on the floor. How do we keep it clean? [more inside]
Bathroom renovation snafu. The adobe-colored corian stripes in the shower don't quite work with the dark brown floor tile. [more inside]
Am I normal? [more inside]
I work a desk job in an office building. There are about 4 doors on our floor that require a keycard to access. One leads to a bathroom, the other leads to the kitchen, which has the coffee maker and water fountain. The other two go to other departments. My employer has notified me that they have registered a very high frequency of passing through these doors. They run reports on what keycards are used to open doors, and how often they are used. I drink a lot of water and coffee at work an urinate frequently, hence my passing through these doors. Can they legally do this? Can they punish me in any way? Obviously, I'm in the US.
Towel buying noob here. I'm after new bath towels and the towel marketing world has moved on since I last bought towels when there was a choice of crappy, OK and expensive. Now there's all talk about combed cotton, Egyptian cotton, pile length, grams per square metre and I don't understand any of it. Please enlighten me you froody mefites who always know where their towel is. Requirements (not many! we're talking about towels here) inside. [more inside]
It's a weird question, I know, but my bathroom has a weird counter. The sink sits on the far left. On the far right, there's a hand-towel hung from a loop on the wall. But there's an awkward empty counter space between the two. I'm not looking to fill the space. I just feel like something should be sitting there against the rear of the counter to make the space look not so empty. But what? I'm a single bachelor, so yeah, this is as much a question about style as it is about functionality. Even strange suggestions are welcome! I have a nice dispenser of hand soap by the sink. Other than that, there's nothing on the counter and it looks like there should be. Like I said, it's a weird question, but it's bugged me for a while so I figured I'd ask the hive mind. What looks good on a bathroom counter?
The counter for my bathroom sink sits below the level of the counter (picture). When the water is turned off, or the soap dispenser used, water dripping off hands gets all over the counter and eventually runs to the edge of the counter onto the floor. I want this to stop. The fix for the faucet is to find a new faucet. But I'm not sure what to do about the soap dispenser. [more inside]
I would like to buy an amazing toilet for our home. What should I get? [more inside]
Ok. I can't believe I'm even asking this question, but here goes: How does a woman effectively wipe "front to back" after urinating? [more inside]
I have a cylindrical towel rack that is bent. I need to unbend it. How can I do this without damaging it further? [more inside]
My friend has this thing in her bathroom beside the sink and she doesn't know what it is. It was there when she moved in and the former owners are long gone. Does anyone know what it does and does it have an official name? Like, would I be able to find a new one in a store? Here is a small gallery of 3 photos I took of it. Thank you!
I bought a house last year that I've been continually remodeling & up next is the bathroom in the basement. However, the walls really confuse me. What are my options? Any suggestions? [more inside]
OK, weird question this week, but I have wondered about this for a while. I've noticed in public bathrooms there are a lot of men who either 1) spit in the urinal continuously while peeing or 2) keep pulling the flush handle while standing there pissing or 3) do both of these at the same time. I'm sure there are multiple reasons for why to do this, but I am curious as to your speculations about why they are doing it. Is the spitting some way of being macho? Is the constant flushing some way of disposing that which is "dirty"? the "normative" behavior is to piss and then flush, so why this variant (which also wastes a lot of water BTW)? Why the combination of both spitting and flushing? I think we may reveal something about male psychology or social ideology here.
We're redoing a bathroom in a house we plan to sell. It's a very old house, so nothing is quite standard. Between the new sink cabinet and the stacked washer / dryer there is a space that's about 10 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 80 inches high. We'd like to make it functional in some way. It also should look nice. [more inside]
60-year-old house, trap arm and drain/vent are galvanized, trap arm is rusty and I want to remove it. Or should I cut it, or hire someone to do it for me? [more inside]
Can anyone think of a reliable, simple and compact way to lock a two part/bi-fold door? [more inside]
I'm helping the art director on a 1950s period webisode series. There are a few shots which are inside of a bar bathroom. We're interested in recreating graffiti that would have existed in that era and before, since the bar has been open about twenty years. I've come across references to 'Kilroy was here', but not much else. Can anyone help me out?
