Need advice on kitchen and bath remodel

I'm totally gutting kitchen and 2 baths and want to do it as cheaply as possible to stay within budget (30-35k) and am overwhelmed with the number of contractors and kitchen cabinet showrooms out there and don't know where to start. Should I hire general contractor to take care of everything or should I start with going to kitchen cabinet showroom and then act as my own contractor and hire out plumber, electrician etc. Which is the most cost effective? I want to remove 2 walls for the remodel, does this mean I have to hire a contractor anyways? Help! For those who've done this, where did you start? Also how much did you spend, is my budget realistic?

Optimally Relaxing Bath

My 14-year-old daughter has trouble sleeping. Recently she had good results after a long bath with a bath bomb from Lush, so she is after me to get her a bunch of them. But at (up to) $9 a pop, I'm wondering if there's something more cost-effective. [more inside]

My 17 year old kitty, UFO, doesn't seem to be able to keep her fur clean and fluffy. I brush her, but that's not enough. I don't want to stress her with a wet bath. Does anyone have experience with dry bath products for kitties? Any suggestions are welcome.

Tub Time for Timmy

I have a huge 100+ gallon tub with jets and such. What are some fun things I can add to my bath time to make it more enjoyable? I already do bubblebath and salts, and have a few floating toys and a water pipe (pan pipes you can play in the tub).. For various reasons I spend hours in there at a time. Generally I read beater books or watch Netflix on my otherwise decommissioned iPhone 4. Assume I am bathing alone and am not afraid of anything

Help me spend too much on a bar of soap

In the spirit of self-care in the dead of winter, I want to treat myself to some fancy soap. I am not really aware of high-quality hip-or-classic skincare brands that might have a bar soap (not liquid!) that fits what I'm looking for:
  • a unisex scent palette (I like savory, spicy, vanilla-y scents more than florals),
  • moisturizing properties,
  • natural ingredients,
  • a bit of exfoliant

A non-slip bath tub mat that actually doesn't slip?

You know those mats you put on the floor of the bath tub so you don't slip? Bought one and it's slipped once or twice. So is there a particular brand of these mats that you've bought and it has never, ever once slipped, say for years? The wife needs one that we can pretty much guarantee will never, ever slip. I'm not looking for "Oh just go buy one," but "We bought this specific mat x years ago and it's worked like a champ, through all sorts of soapy water, buy this one." Alternative suggestions for preventing slippage in the bathtub while showering are fine.

How can I fix this bath drain plug?

My house came with a plug like this. A few weeks back my wife unscrewed it to remove some hair and now it won't go back. It won't screw to the threads in the drain. It seems like the drain threads are slightly larger than the one in the plug. Maybe some adapter was there that fell into the drain? No idea. I bought another plug from Lowes that looked slightly larger, but it didn't thread. How can I fix this without getting a plumber to visit?

I went to the UK and all I got was this lousy, uh, bath rug.

I'm cheerfully ensconced in a dorm room with its own bath. Yay! But it's one of those showers that just sits off in the corner of a tiny stall, with no real separation from the rest of the wash area. Ergo, water everywhere! So where on earth (OK, in London) can a traveling American get a cheap bath rug? If it helps, I'm right next to Victoria Station. Assume that I can navigate the Tube just fine (but would really prefer not to wander all of London looking for a cheap bath rug).

How can I keep my bath warm for longer periods of time?

    - I live in an apartment and the water heater does not give an entire 40g of hot water [the capacity of the water heater and approximate capacity of the tub]. - I would like to relax in the bath for at least 20 minutes or more. - I've tried boiling water, aquarium heater [fail, takes to long to heat], basalt stones [too small to matter]. Waterproofing a hand shower mounted on a bath enclosure?

I'm renovating my bathroom, and want a hand shower mounted in the tile of the batch enclosure, on a hose, like in this image. But it seems like water can get into the hose hole and then collect under the bath. There will be a shower over the bath, although at the other end of the bath to the handheld. My plumber is a bit worried about how to waterproof it. How are these type of retractable hand showers normally waterproofed?
