I once uncovered the identity of the song that Richard Bona plays and sings in this demo for De Grier basses, but I can't find where I stashed the link. I think it's old, like from the 50's or 60's. Hope me?
Looking for the best app for learning to play bass guitar. [more inside]
The title says it all - I guess it's a very niche problem and maybe someone has advice on how to do this?
I play the bass. Haven't played much Blues music. For the purpose of study and emulation I am looking for Blues recordings where the bass playing is masterful . Somewhat surprisingly, I haven't found any discographies online. Recordings where the bass is fulfilling its modest background duties, as dictated by the genre, in exemplary fashion. (Sheer Blues only, please, for this purpose. Not Rock.)
Which musicians have actually "real" signature models of their instruments available or previously available? [more inside]
Please help me add to my list of pop songs that have a great low frequencies. [more inside]
There's a voice stuck in my head. It's a male singer, blues and folk, about the same timbre as Leonard Cohen but smoother, with a mournful sound and very slight rasp on the higher notes. Who is he? [more inside]
Reading Sasha Frere-Jones's 2007 article about the lack of audible bass frequencies and syncopated bass parts in indie rock again recently got me thinking. What contemporary indie rock bands bring the bass? [more inside]
One of my friends is learning to play bass, I've been helping him out with some basic stuff as I play guitar, but I don't know much bass specific stuff. It's his birthday soon, and I'd like to get him something bass related. Is there a book, a piece of kit or anything really that you'd recommend? The stuff we're going through is mainly blues/rock. Thanks.

Hi. If I have new IEMs and the bass sounds like it's just too much -- unblended, overshadowing, even muddying -- is it possible that it will balance out in the same way as other problems go away during/after proper burn-in time? [more inside]
Wife bought this (used) bass guitar back in 1988ish. Kramer Spector IV. Never used it. Wants to sell it. Appears to be in very good condition. No clue about the value -- poked around a few forums/sites, didn't find anything particularly helpful. Now turning to Mighty AskMeFi for info on what we can reasonably expect to ask/get for it.
How do musicians actually find other musicians in this crazy modern super-connected world? Especially in the big city? [more inside]
I've become curious about the musical potential of the acoustic bass guitar. Does anybody know of any recordings, in any genre, where this instrument is used to good effect? [more inside]
After searching, I see this has come up on Ask MeFi before in regards to apartment situations. The difference here is that we own, as do our neighbors. We live in Chicago, and naturally the police are less than responsive about these sorts of matters. I have spoken to the vibrating bass vehicle owner himself, twice, which helps for a week or so at most. I am a quiet person and a homebody - also a stay-at-home mom to a toddler and impending baby. There is literally nowhere in the house I can go to escape it when it's at max volume. [more inside]
For home recordings, I'm looking to learn a new instrument that is cello-like, low-end and haunting sounding, but not large and unwieldy. Help me brainstorm. [more inside]
Last night, at an otherwise excellent show, my electric bass amp died. Power was on, amp was off, and would not turn on any longer. In the middle of a song. This would be fine, but: this is my third amp that's died in three years. What's up? [more inside]
I own this amp. It works fine except for one thing: the sound is tremendously bassy. Currently, I have the bass turned all the way down and the treble all the way up and it is STILL too bassy. I only play distorted/high gain. What are my best options for getting a treblier sound?
I am a bass player, and I have recently returned to playing loud, noisy rock and roll after a 4-year hiatus from the stage. I have always eschewed earplugs on stage, on the grounds that they keep me from hearing all of the nuance I need to hear to play effectively with a group. But I ain't no spring chicken anymore, and now I recognize that the real reason I never wore earplugs before, even in mind-bendingly loud bands, was mostly out of misplaced machismo. I can tell that I have lost some hearing over the years, especially in the ear that usually faces the drums, and I want to avoid losing more. I have tried using cheap, disposable foam ear plugs, but I am not satisfied with the sound quality I am getting with them. Are there better ear protection alternatives out there? [more inside]
Over the weekend, I was blindsided by a powerful urge to buy an acoustic bass guitar (not stand up bass), mostly for noodling around the house without plugging in my electric or an occasional acoustic jam with friends. Can you give any buying advice or perspectives? [more inside]

I have an upright bass, a Fishman B-2 preamp, a Sennheiser e835 microphone, a Peavy PV10 Mixing board, an Ampeg Micro VR stack, a Six Rounds piezo pickup (which suck suck sucks, but I mention for full disclosure), and various cables and connecters. How can I combine these items to best amplify the upright bass? [more inside]
i'm trying to hang guitars and basses on a brick wall. i have instrument hangers already, but drilling a million holes into brick seems like A BAD IDEA so i thought i would hang a board (cedar, i ALSO already have it) on the wall (many fewer screw-holes) and then just screw the guitar holders to the plank. the plank is 5.5" wide and 1 1/4" deep (and 6 feet long) and really pretty, so i'm ALMOST happy. The ends are really roughly cut though (despite my best sanding job), and i was hoping to cover them up with something (copper? silk?) so it looks a bit less like i, um, hung a plank on the wall, and more like i'm incredibly crafty and awesome. what should i use for the ends of these boards? google is not helping, but maybe i'm searching using the wrong words(?). thank you!
I've played classical piano for years, but I'm just starting out with jazz and blues. A friends is learning bass guitar from scratch. Can anyone recommend some easy riffs or chord progressions we could play together?

Help me find a quality drum and bass/jungle festival to attend in the next 12-24 months (or a fun city to visit with weeklies/clubs/options for hearing a variety of heavy, bass-driven music... but not so much dubstep). Preferably somewhere in Canada or the U.S.; other ideas welcome, as long as they're worthwhile and not scary-expensive. [more inside]

I've been playing electric bass guitar in bands continuously for about 25 years or so. The last 20 years I've been using a pick exclusively, and for most of that time, while playing, I've suffered bad pain in my picking hand - specifically around the base of my thumb and in between the thumb and index finger. It's kind of like a cramp that comes on about 5 minutes after I start playing, and can in extreme isntances result in me not being able to hold onto the pick. The pain subsides after I stop playing, but it's a serious hinderance to playing well! I'm in a punk band, so lots of speed picking. I've tried hand and arm exercises, stretching, upping my potassium intake (bananas and coconut water), repositioning the bass, and taking Ibuprofin before playing and none of it seems to work reliably. Is this something I am just have to live with?
I've decided to buy my first upright bass to learn on (a used student bass). What to look for? [more inside]
I'm in need of heavy, new music. I know that sounds general, but if I give a couple of examples, could you recommend similar tracks or albums? OK: The Zed's Dead remix of Massive Attack's "Paradise Circus." The entire Araabmuzik album. Also, the Weeknd's first EP. [more inside]
