I'm hoping the hive mind can help me identify a sci-fi baseball short-story I read a few decades ago, probably in the 1970's. [more inside]
Let's say I would like to organize 6 friends to go see a baseball game. There's one problem: ticket purchases have to be done at the same time to ensure that people sit together. How is this circle squared? [more inside]
Is there a way I can watch a bit of a baseball game that wasn't really the game? [more inside]

Haven't owned a TV ever since I got a projector, but now that I'm back in the US I'd like to catch Oakland A's games on local broadcast. How to do this as cheaply as possible? [more inside]
I am looking for a baseball podcast that gives a rundown of the previous days games. The old Baseball Today used to do that, but since they've switched over I haven't been able to find anything that does this. Sounds simple, right?
I play fantasy baseball in a league with friends, some of whom pay no attention and others who have baseball stats in their very DNA. I myself am moderately ok most of the time, but generally have a low-level understanding of what I'm doing, so when things go wrong my solution is usually to flail around with free agent players while watching my ship sink, week by week. I'd like to get off this plateau and actually learn more about the game, sabermetrics, etc so I can be a legit contender, but I'm lost in the morass: every resource I can find is super basic or way over my head. Help! [more inside]
I'm a rookie member of the Providence Grays, a vintage baseball team. This season, we are having a difficult time finding a source of wool that we can use for our baseball trousers. Can anyone help me find a source? [more inside]
I have a friend visiting me that wants to watch the Red Sox and so I got tickets for the upcoming Red Sox v. Orioles game in Boston (Friday, January 18). Said friend is a big baseball buff, while I only have passing interest and haven't been following any baseball closely for more than two years now. My friend won't judge me for that or anything, but still, can someone give me a quick rundown of interesting talking points for this game? [more inside]
I'm looking for some good sports newsletters. [more inside]
I am looking for decent afternoon or evening watching a baseball game; without all the rah-rah videos and constant music filling in all the time. The Brooklyn Cyclones have long fallen to this unfortunate trend. I don't need big stars or added entertainment.
According to Back to the Future II, the Chicago Cubs will win the World Series in the distant future of 2015. If a meme started up and caused an inordinate number of people to jokingly/ironically bet on the Cubs next season, would that affect their odds? [more inside]
The last time I seriously followed baseball the internet was a very different place. I feel like getting back into it this season and want to know where to start with all the baseball sites out there. [more inside]
Is there a more relaxed version of fantasy baseball -- preferably one that I can just play online without organizing a league among my acquaintances? [more inside]
I once read a short story about a kid in New York. I was exposed to it in one of my college courses on the short story form, so it wasn't something I randomly stumbled upon. It was the sort of story that would probably be taught to neophytes studying the form. I can't recall if it was in our Norton anthology (don't think so; I've checked through anthologies from that era) or a copy packet. The bare facts: Brooklyn kid, I think; lived in a Brownstone; at the age when it was time to make a decision about college or work; listened to a Giants (baseball) game on the radio; lazed about in his room thinking; went for a walk (maybe at night?) because he had a big decision to make; feels to me now like the sort of thing that would have been written in the 40s or 50s. I've been wanting to reread this story for 15 years. Finally got around to writing this out and seeking the assistance of Ask Metafilter. Can anyone help?
A couple of years ago I met Joe Torre, totally outside of a baseball context. He graciously gave me two signed baseballs, with no fanfare, just reached into his pockets and came out with two balls wrapped in tissue paper saying, "Want some balls?" Well, yes, of course I wanted them, and I took them home and socked them away thinking that someday—maybe when he was inducted to the baseball hall of fame—I would sell them. Well, Joe's been voted in, and I'd like to explore the best way to put my memorabilia on the market. I'm curious how to go about that. [more inside]
My Comcast feed and the MLB.com audio feed are about 30 seconds off. Unfortunately, the Comcast video is running 30 seconds behind the MLB.com audio. When I had DirecTV the audio was always about 1 minute behind, so it was easy to simply pause the TV until the audio caught up, then watch it off the DVR on a 1 minute delay synched to the audio feed. How can I achieve the same result pausing the audio stream via MLB.com? Linux solutions are best as my laptop runs the latest Ubuntu LTS. Android ok too if there is an app that does this that I haven't found. Please help, I just can't listen to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver for another game, let alone the entire World Series.
A question that came up in discussion with my baseball-loving son: which uniform number has the most career home runs? In other words: which N gives the maximum value of the number of home runs hit by players wearing uniform N (at the time of the home run?) I was hoping one of the tools at baseball-reference would be able to compute this for me, but I didn't find it there. Some contenders are #44 (Hank Aaron, Reggie Jackson), #25 (Bonds as a Giant, Thome, Palmeiro) and #3 (late Ruth, pre-Yankee A. Rodriguez, Foxx, Killebrew)

My mom has asked me to find a quote that she used to carry around with her after her mother died, but that she has recently lost. As she remembers it, it's something that Pete Rose recited when his father passed away. I've spent an hour searching for it, but my Google-fu appears to be weak today. Anybody have an inkling what she's looking for? My mom's question to me is inside. [more inside]

A friend and I will be seeing a baseball game tomorrow at AT&T Park -- Section FC 107, behind visitors' dugout. Other than going in by a special entrance, what are the benefits of sitting in Field Club level? I want to take advantage of the advantages, since I'm sure the tickets cost $$$$$$$$$$$$.

I have a ten-year-old boy staying with me for the next month in a Maryland suburb of DC. I would love to hear any and all suggestions for activities in the DC area (especially if anyone knows about any kind of baseball day camp or one day programs, anything baseball related). We have been having fun exploring the area but new ideas would be awesome. Thank you.
How early does one need to be at Nationals Park to grab one of the $5 grandstand tickets for a Saturday afternoon game? They start selling them 2 1/2 hours in advance, how early do I really need to be there? First time back in DC in a couple years...they're playoff contenders now. I have been watching SeatGeek for amazing deals for other seats...but I've got graduate student money.

What are some thoughtful documentaries/long-form articles about baseball umpires? I'm wondering if there's a thoughtful, well-done documentary (I'm hoping for something of the caliber of HBO's now-defunct Costas Now) or a long-form article (again, in the caliber of New Yorker or Vanity Fair) that's accessible to folks who aren't exclusively diehard baseball fans.
