If you've ever lived in or visited Chicago and had a good time without getting hopelessly lost, you are cordially invited to post in this thread. Needed: an explanation of the grid system, tips and tricks on navigation, and recommendations for how to find the underground music scene, awesome beers, weird things to explore, and the best Chicago-focused blogs. Illinois' statewide smoking ban went into effect January 1st. Now, instead of being warm and cozy inside the bar, I'm cold and grumpy outside. Does anyone have any tips and tricks, preferably someone who's "lived" through a smoking ban of their own? (e.g. New York) [more inside]

I'm looking for a nice, quiet pub in Chicago-- lots of dark wood, no blaring music, minimal ESPN-stuck TVs. Someplace good to go for a few pints and actual conversation. Northwest side preferable, Irving Park-area if possible, although I'm not too picky about that.

After eighteen years in Detroit, four years in Ann Arbor and one in Washington, DC I am packing up my life and moving to Chicago. I've been to town a few times as a tourist, but this will be my first long-term stay. I'm looking for recommendations of good bars, music stores, and restaurants. [more inside]

WhoDeyFilter: I'm in Chicago, on the northside. My buddy is visiting from Cincinnati this weekend, and I want to take him to a bar on Sunday to watch the Bengals' game (our CBS affiliate is showing "Showstopper American Dance" instead). There are lots of bars that have NFL Sunday Ticket, but I want to make it an experience and find a place that is Bengals-specific. There must be one. What is it called and where is it? And I thank you. [more inside]
