Where in the SF Bay Area should I celebrate Oktoberfest? Last year I felt like I found out about amazing Oktoberfest parties a few days after they happened. Where should (and shouldn't) I head to celebrate the most noble of drinks? Size really doesn't matter, big or small both appeal to me. Events with Oompah bands and other fun touches score bonus points.

Barley?

Spurred by a recent flour question: why does some flour have barley in it, and some doesn't? And why? And what are the qualitative differences (flavor, texture) between the two?

Barley Bread?

Anyone know where I can get whole grain barley bread? Possibly barley bread without wheat flour? Or perhaps a recipe that would allow me to make it myself.

Pearls before swine

Hulled barley: how long should it take to cook? The internets have failed me. Every recipe is for pearled barley, but I've got the chewy whole grain kind. How long should it take to cook, either on the stove or in the slow cooker? Should I use broth or water? and how much liquid to 1 c barley? It's been soaking for about 5 hours now. Bonus points for a barley-mushroom soup recipe using hulled barley, though I can probably improvise that based on the Zingerman's version. Extra special double points for good websites and/or cookbooks for cooking with whole grains.

tsampa in tsydney

where can i get tsampa in sydney? or failing that, how can i make it myself? the roasted flour, that is, not the porridgey dishy things.

"he who must obey" is tibetan, so can do that part hisself.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsampa

i'm happy to do the postal thang too if necessary. but i gather that it would be easiest to source it locally.

normally i'd ask the tibetan community for this kind of info... but they seem to get it from tibet/dharamsala.... and it is a major pain in the bum to get a hold of. not to mention, expensive.

"he who must obey" is getting all nostalgic for mum's cooking... so it's time to rock some tsampa.

if it's just roasted barley flour... and i end up having to create it from barley.... would one roast the barley, then turn it to flour, or get barley flour, then roast the flour? (told you i knew nothin'!) and if i have to turn something in to flour... how do i do that? and if i have to roast barley... how do i do THAT?

sorry to be so verbose but you really need to fully comprehend my ignorance... and explain everything in idiotic detail. i have an oven and a convection microwave... and a little food processory thing.
thanks folks, you rock...(in advance)

oh crud... did i mention that i was in sydneyland australia?

DIY healthy grain cereal

Where are some good recipes for making your own cracked wheat cereal, combined with other grains like millet, quinoa, etc? We have a pounds of wheat, a wheat grinder, millet, quinoa, hulled barley, etc. and want to combine it to make a nice slow-cooking breakfast cereal. We have a pressure cooker, rice cooker, crockpot, etc. but for some reason I'm having a hard time finding some good recipes for combining the grains, ratios, etc. and cooking them up.

Help me find yellow barley

I'm looking for yellow barley...or something that looks a lot like barley, only yellow, and might or might not be in a Korean market. A few years back, a family friend served me a delicious side dish with what appeared to be yellow barley in it. It was bright yellow like a sunflower; it was a little chewier than the regular barley I've had before, it didn't stick together, and it had a nice nutty flavor. She said she got it at her local Korean market and hadn't seen it anywhere else. I had a craving for it today and went looking for it at the Korean market near me, but found only garden-variety barley. Anyone know if this stuff goes by another name, or where I might be able to find it? Am I barking up the wrong tree or do I just need to try another Korean place?

Help me find out why I'm allergic to certain beers

So, I've become allergic to certain beers. I'm trying to narrow down what it is that makes my eustachian tubes inflamed within 10 minutes of drinking one fine beverage. I'm pretty sure that it is hoppy beers that cause the problem. Are there specific beers that I should try because of their inherent hops type to narrow down the cause? I'm hoping that it is a specific hop varietal. I can only drink so many Stouts and Pilsners.
