I need to find a pair of minimalist footwear (barefoot shoes? What are these things even called?) that will last out the summer. [more inside]
There once was a video... it talked about how we were born barefoot and then put on shoes so that we could go to work to earn enough money to retire on the beach and go barefoot. My Googlefu is weak tonight. Does anyone know where I can find it online?
Help me find the right pair of minimalist shoes! I've been a member of a Crossfit gym for six months, which means I've been exposed to the peer pressure regarding Vibram FiveFingers. Plus, I'm starting to travel a lot (and lightly) and want a pair of running shoes that have a small footprint (heh) when packed in a suitcase. Recommendations for this recreational runner? Are Vibrams a good option? Which model? How do I size them? I'm training for next October's Portland Marathon, if that makes a difference. Bonus points for shoes available at REI (though that's not a requirement).

Ok, seriously: Is there any reliable information on running shoes out there? Who the hell can I trust? Every source of information seems either fraught with bias or complete fluff. What's a critical thinker to do? And more importantly, what goddamn shoes should I buy? [more inside]

I've been hearing a lot about the benefits of walking barefoot, and barring that, wearing shoes like the Vibram Five Fingers or Nike Frees, which aren't padded. But are there cheaper alternatives? Wouldn't the lineup of Converse All-Stars and Puma shoes, to give two examples, have the same effect? Any others?
I am not a runner or long distance walker, but would I be less tired and achey at the end of a day spent generally on my feet in a 'barefoot' style pair of shoes such as Nike Free or Vibram Five Fingers, or in a regular pair of cushiony shoes? [more inside]
