Korean Grill House need not apply

Best Korean Barbeque on Bloor? I'm taking some friends out for Korean barbeque this weekend, and I'm looking for recommendations for the best grill-at-your-table places, ideally in (but not limited to) the Bloor & Christie corridor. My criteria for evaluation include not only quality and selection of meats, but quality and variety of panchan, other dishes (mandu, pajeon, etc.), atmosphere and such.

Feel the Side Burn

What should I make with my grill's side burner? My uncle went in with me to buy a very nice, highly rated natural gas barbecue. It's fantastic. And it comes with this handy side burner that I can use for... umm... well, I have no clue.

What do you do with a side burner on a barbecue? What makes it better than going inside and using my stove?

Shock and awe barbeque recipes?

What are some barbeque recipes that will impress my meat-eating boyfriend? I've been a chicken/fish/veggie burger kind of lady since the age of 14 (now 28) and so I know virtually nothing about preparing other kinds of meat. My omnivorous boyfriend frequently and uncomplainingly does most of our joint cooking, and only makes things that we both enjoy.

We've been grilling on my charcoal grill lately, and I'd like to surprise him by making something awesome just for him. I have no problems handling beef or pork or whatever, I simply choose not to eat it myself.

Got any fantastic recipes to recommend?

I hate the smell of lighter fluid in the evening

My downstairs neighbors use lighter fluid for their charcoal grill and the fumes fill our condo if we aren't home. What are the specific health hazards of the fumes from charcoal lighter fluid? The condo I live in has three floors of identical units. We left the sliding glass door that leads to our porch slightly ajar while we went to eat. Our downstairs neighbors have a charcoal grill (not allowed to have propane per condo rules) on their porch directly under ours and I came home from dinner tonight to a house that smells like lighter fluid. It's actually hard to breathe and I got light-headed just running around opening the rest of our windows.

I'd like to buy them a chimney starter as a good will gesture and ask them to stop using the lighter fluid for their grill. I figured it would be good to know the health hazards of the fumes and smoke from the buring fluid before I stomp downstairs and complain, but I'm having a hard time finding information.

Any information for the health risks of inhaling burned lighter fluid fumes would be great.

If you have any advice or experience dealing with downstairs neighbors and their barbeque hazards, those could be useful as well.

Iron Chef RavinDave

Need tips on cooking Chicken in a Crockpot. Okay ... over the past few weeks, I've been having startlingly good (for me) success making ribs in a slowcooker. I used an ultra-simple batchelor-centric recipe: Cut slab of ribs into 8-9 pieces, submerge in BBQ sauce diluted a bit with water. Simmer on LOW for 8 hours. I tossed in a few onion slices, adding a touch of brown sugar & cider vinegar along with various spices ... works perfect.

I want to try something similar with chicken.

QUESTION: I'm thinking 8 hours -- even on LOW -- would be way too much cooking time for chicken. Am I right?

Any other pointers (or QUICK-n-EZ crockpot recipes) welcomed!

Help me bbq better!

Looking for new BBQ marinades and recipes...(mi) So, i've browsed through all the previous questions here about barbequing, and I'm still looking for information.

Every year I cook for a gathering of 100-200 people. Over the last couple years i've had more control over the food and I've tried to improve on myself each time.

This year i'm looking for some new ideas, for marinades, and even dishes to serve. I'll give a rundown of last year's food to give you an idea. Also, I worked for a year as a prep / line cook, so cooking concepts like sautee don't scare me.

Last years food I prepped and or cooked -
Marinated chicken / vegetable skewers
Marinated shrimp skewers
Hand pressed burgers
Sausages of various types
grilled zucchini
portobello mushrooms
hot dogs, etc

So if you know any super-duper things i should be using as marinade, or ways to cook, etc please let me know. For what it's worth, i try to avoid grilling fish at this party.

BTW, If anyone is interested in checking out the party, it's on last Saturday of this month, in the Portland, OR area. I was the guy that brought the doughnuts to the 8th aniv, so if you remember me and thought, "hey, i'd like to drink free beer and have that guy make me food," well here's your chance.

Fall off the bone chicken

How can I make fall-off-the-bone chicken? A local BBQ place has great fall-off-the-bone chicken thighs with a dry rub applied. I can't for the life of me replicate the consistency of the chicken. I've tried cooking at very high heat, I've tried slow-roasting at low heat. I get good, moist chicken, but not the kind of chicken that pulls off of the bone in big pieces and leaves you with a clean bone afterwards. This is really vexing me! Unfortunately I don't have a grill. Is it possible to replicate this in the oven?

Help Me Help The Yankee!

Help me help a friend find good Southern-style barbecue in New York. I made the mistake of gushing about eating some really great barbecue and now I've made my little Yankee friend jealous of all the awesome barbecue places down here in the South. He lives in the Yonkers NY area and has only found two varieties: cheap and horrible or too expensive to enjoy guilt-free.

So, Hive Mind, I ask you: where can a Yankee find Southern-style barbecue in the New York area? To quote him, "I want the places where you see the smoke from the smoke pit out back raising up in the air."

Suggestions for barbequey, easy-to-prepare vegan food? What are some foods that vegans and omnivores can share, which feel appropriate at a barbeque? We'll be doing vegetable shishkabobs, but what else? The omnivores are getting burgers and hot dogs -- nothing fancy.
Where to host a large BBQ around Boston?

Where in the Boston area can one host a large barbeque? (we may or may not be doing the actual grilling ourselves) For various reasons, my fiance and I will not be inviting our friends to our upcoming wedding. Therefore, we want to hold a large engagement or pre-wedding party for all our friends - something more celebratory and 'special' than just having everyone over to our (smallish) backyard.
It's looking like between 30-40 people, plus a couple of toddlers.
We would like to serve alcohol (wine and beer) and have music (an iPod or laptop with a friend being the DJ, nothing spectacular)
My fiance wants to do the grilling himself if this is feasible, or we can get it catered (ideas for BBQ caterers in the Boston area would be appreciated).
other requirements: nothing too expensive - I'd like a nice place, but want to spend the bulk of the budget on the food and drink.
A place which is accessible by public transportation would be a huge bonus to avoid trying to organise carpooling for some car-less friends.

Hot gas, how to cool?

We bought a gas barbeque, but it's a little too hot, even on the lowest setting. What can I do about it? I turn the tank all the way on, as the instructions said, and then use the controls on the grill to raise or lower the flame. Is it ok to use the tank as well?

The other day I cooked country style pork loin ribs and by the time my spiffy digital thermometer got to the needed temperature for pork the outside was severely charred. I'd like to cook slower.

On a connected issue, can I use lavarocks and soaked hickory chips on a gas bbq, both to regulate the flames and to add flavour?

Lastly, any great step-by-step simple recipes to get me started on the road to being an awesome bbq god?

Which barbeque/grill?

What kind of barbeque/grill should I get? I want to be able to grill, both for my own personal cooking and for parties and such, and so I need a grill. I have seen a myriad many different grills, but I honestly can't tell what would be best for me. I liked my friend's Big Green Egg, but I'm concerned that it might take so long to get going that I wouldn't use it very often.

I have a big deck, so size isn't a huge issue. Price isn't an issue per se, but I don't really want to spend more than I have to, either. I'd love to just know more about what people think. Propane vs charcoal? Big vs Small? Any brands? Any other grill tips?
