I was listening today to Bascom Lamar Lunsford’s “I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground”, which includes the unforgettable line, “the railroad man, he’ll kill you if he can/And drink out your blood like wine”. Who is this guy? Will he? Why? [more inside]

Recently, Spotify removed a recording of the song Rocky Top by the Osborne Brothers (listed as "Rocky Top (Original Version)") from their library and I desperately want to find another copy. It's not the single version because it has a fiddle instead of steel guitar. I'm pretty sure it's a studio recording. [more inside]
I've been listening to a lot of Pete Seeger since he died. What other old time banjo players might I like? I'm not looking for fast rolls, finger picks, bluegrass style. I'm looking for frailing, clawhammer, and plaintive melodies. This sort of thing.
I'm wanting to take a banjo on a (domestic) United flight to Honolulu soon. The banjo fits the letter of the law (dimensions etc) for fitting it into the overhead locker, but I'm concerned that flight crew may want us to check it. Musicians of Metafilter, what are your tips and wisdom for getting a banjo on board a United aircraft as hand-luggage?
There are a number of instructors who offer banjo lessons over Skype. Does anyone have a personal recommendation? I am interested mainly in bluegrass style, though would be open to other styles if the instructor is strong. (I currently live in South Asia, so local lessons do not seem feasible.)
I have an inordinate crush on songs like Sufjan Steven's "For the Widows of Paradise" and in general love the sound of clawhammer/frailing banjo. Can you help me find more not-strictly-traditional music featuring clawhammer banjo? [more inside]

Where can I get a print/poster of an Annie Leibovitz photo? Specifically the second one on this page. I know it is in a book of collected works, but I'm looking for something a little larger to hang on a wall. It seems a little odd that it wouldn't be available somehow, but that seems to be the case. Is there something about such high caliber photographers' work that I don't know about?

Is it a grand gesture to anonymously give a woman I think is beautiful a banjo? At the beginning of this semester, I briefly was in a relationship with a woman who I cared a great deal about. It didn’t end well, and really, it couldn’t have ended well. We have nothing in common. But as it is, I still think she is beautiful, and I’d like to do something truly grand, both to make this world a better (albeit stranger) place, and to give myself some closure. [more inside]

I have just been gifted a beloved and much missed late relative's 8-string banjo mandolin. The relative bought the instrument (used) in the early-mid 1970s and died soon after. Despite googling the universe I cannot find out anything about the instrument or maker. On the head it says "Wayne" in a horizontal scroll and then vertically underneath, "Dixie". I'd love to know more about the instrument. Anyone heard of Wayne Dixie banjo mandolins?

I'm a sucker for the "dying but smiling" feeling I get from the sound of a banjo. What modern/recent songs have banjo in them? I'm looking for things that don't fall neatly under the category of bluegrass - a pop/rock/alternative song that just happens to have a banjo rather than Bela Fleck/String Cheese Incident/Cherryholmes type stuff.
What if Getz and Gilberto were, you know, cousins? Would they still have made beautiful music together? [more inside]

I'm looking for artists/songs that sound like the slide-guitar/banjo intro to KMFDM's WWIII. I'm not really very familiar with bluegrass (is that even the right genre?) outside Bill Monroe, and none of his stuff sounds much like this.
