What's an awesome coffee table book about a singer/band? [more inside]
I just watched That Thing You Do for the first time in ages, and fell in love with the title track all over again. It got me wondering, what other good and notable songs were written to sound like the popular songs of a different era? [more inside]
I'm in the market for a little piece of audio gear to experiment with and add live sounds to a fairly traditional three piece rock band. I'm having a bit of trouble working out what would suit my 'needs'. [more inside]
How do you go about finding more information on music acts whose names are difficult to google? [more inside]
Hey Me-fites, I'm dipping my toes into the pool of time travel novels. My main character is going back to 1984--because I want to write about 1984 Vancouver, pre Expo, pre Olympics, when it was a hick town on the far edge of the world. When my characters back in time, he's going to check out some bands, preferably pre-famous, you know, $5 cover, one of three acts, tiny clubs, etc. So, oh wise ones, what band should he find himself seeing?
I'm finding it harder than I figured to keep up with Quebec music, two years after moving to Ontario. I'm looking for websites or blogs that are currently active, and focus on French-language music in Quebec.
I'm in need of some new additions to my kitchen dancing playlists. Who should I be listening to? [more inside]
I recently came across the Bad Apple String Band, an awesome Sonoma-based bluegrass band. What I like about their particular flavour of bluegrass (if this is in fact bluegrass, I'm far from knowledgeable about this) is how complicated and frantic it is, while still being minor key and kind of melancholy. In particular, I like the song "Countin' Cards". Can you help me find similar music?
I'm looking for some concert recommendations in Paris in February or March in the singer-songerwriter/folksy vein. Guitars, good melodies, good lyrics (English preferred). Josh Ritter is a good example. Are there any shows on Songkick (or other aggregators I'm not aware of) that you would recommend? Or maybe your favorite band is passing through on tour? Thanks!
I'm in a musical rut and I'd like to listen to more female-fronted "angry" music. Like Sleater-Kinney, but angrier. Like Hole, but still around. Is there a lesbian version of Trent Reznor? Bonus points for LGBTQ bands and bands that are still performing together. [more inside]
I live in New Mexico, drive-through land for musicians, bands and tours. I've seen plenty of artists and groups stop multiple times in Texas, Arizona, and/or Colorado, but skip New Mexico all-together. Could I get involved with local music promotions to get more musical events in New Mexico? [more inside]
I'm interested in offering my illustration services up for bands' gig posters, and hopefully get to a place where I could get some repeat work in that milieu. It'd be great to make some money from it, but I don't expect it to be overly lucrative. Still, it'd be gratifying to me if I could do work for some of my favourite indie bands. The trouble is that I don't know who handles the production of posters, be it the band, their label or the clubs they play in. Does anyone have any insight into the process by which gig posters are created? I've done freelance illustration in the past, but there seem to be specific rules to this niche. [more inside]
I pretty much only have 2 non-family friends but i am really close with those two friends. We are all low to mid 30s living in different cities in the southeast. Two of us are lawyers, the third is in sales. None of us are breaking the bank but we live comfortably. The problem is (1) we dont work together and (2) none of are particularly in love with our jobs. We have been talking about forming a business together for years but we have thought of any idea as sad as that sounds. We just need some practical but that we could do together. It would be a side gig for us all unless it got big enough to replace our current jobs (the ultimate goal). Looking for suggestions on business ideas or just importantly suggestions on where to find some business ideas. They do not have to be sexy biz ideas but i should say we would probably not be interested in paid blogging, or similar 'work from home' business ideas. I would appreciate any thoughts! Best
I am following my favorite band on Facebook and Twitter, and somehow I still missed that they're performing a gig near me tonight. How can I track when my favorite bands are going to be performing near me? [more inside]
I'm looking for a website that will let me search for bands using the location they're based in. I remember using a site that let me do this in the past, but I can't find it again for the life of me.
I know that not all exercise bands are made the same. I want to get some while traveling and snowed in to do curls, pushups, squats, etc along with body weight workouts. I am not expecting a super workout but do want some decent bang for my buck. Can anyone recommend any less than $50? I would be happy with a set or buying individual bands. Amazon gets good reviews for these, but am open to your suggestions. If the info is the same as this 2010 AskMefi post, feel free to let me know.
As a creative outlet, I have started writing up "True Music Facts" to write to a friend once a week. (I turned one of them about the Steve Miller Band into a post on the blue last week.) My supply is running out much more quickly than I imagined, because I want the fact to be a fun story. So, a TMF isn't something like "the Beatles had the most number 1 hits" or "Boston's debut album sold X million copies." It's more like the story of the Beatles' "Butcher Cover" or Jethro Tull's odd Grammy win for best hard rock/heavy metal performance, or the etymology of a strange band name like Three Dog Night or a song like Cracklin' Rosie. So I ask of you: what are your favorite "True Music Facts?"
I'm looking for stand-up comedy bits (1-4 mins) on the subject of music -- ideally making fun of bands and/or musicians. I am NOT looking for comedy music -- i.e. no songs please, only stand up talking bits. An example of what I mean is this bit by D'Elia about rappers laughing: http://youtu.be/pI5LZEn0qEU Any others out there, preferably not about rap since I already have that one? Thanks :)

We're about to kick out our 5th bandmate (for legitimate reasons: skill is low, ear is bad, attitude is defensive and lazy), who also happens to be one of my best friends.
