Roller Skating with the Least Chance of Death?

Hi! I've just spent way too much time (about 4 hours) online trying to learn which type of skating will hurt less. All information, including this thread, has only told me preferences regarding style and speed, not what will make me go boom less. I care not about speed, performance or dancing in them, only if they can get me to work (much downhill) without dying. [more inside]

Meant to be or not meant to be?

I met this really great guy a few months ago (in a pretty romantic/spontaneous way) after a string of not great relationships. Everything is really healthy, relationship-wise right now. We both have loads of space to sort our brains/ lives, and the small amount of time we do spend together (looking like once a week/ once every two weeks) is really, really something special. However, he’s on a career fast track and has a hard time balancing work/family. [more inside]

Should I move from private sector to public sector for work/life balance

Hi MetaFilter, Putting it out for the group to help me weigh the pro's and con's of a career move. I am 44 years old, marketing professional with 10 years experience in health care marketing communication. I recently got my MBA last year and got recruited to go to another large Chicago health care system. The new job pays more and is OK but we are going through a reorg and merger and my position will change going forward. My current boss is leaving the organization and said that he is putting me forward for a better position with more responsibility going into the reorg but it is hard to trust that this will happen since that is all going to be in flux. About a month ago I applied for a federal marketing communication project manager position with the General Services Administration at the Federal Acquisition Service and this past Friday I was offered the job as a GS-13 Step One and they want my answer on Monday. Upstairs, downstairs (well, mostly down the stairs)

This feels the dumbest question, but can you help me get better at taking the stairs? I don't mean motivation to take the stairs, which seems to be what I get when I Google this, I mean literally putting one foot in front of the other quickly, expediently, safely. Has anyone else ever had this problem? Can you suggest exercises to help? Or suggest good stair-taking technique? [more inside]

where can I get a loan to pay off a credit card?

I bought a computer through Best Buy using their deferred payment plan (i.e. no interest if balance paid in full before one year). I should have been able to pay it with some easy monthly payments, but a perfect storm of events basically means that I'll need a few extra months to do so. Is there a good place I can go to get a loan for this kind of situation? If not, what are my options? My credit score is ~650.

Help me balance my crazy schedule !

Name that picture.

Painting which I saw in a Venice art gallery (I think) showing God holding balance with people on each pan. A small demon (imp) is shown pushing up one of the scale pans with a small trident, while sneakily peeping to see if God can see him. I'd love to know the name of the painting and the artist.

Life's little luxuries...

I spent a few days over the holidays at a yoga/wellness retreat, and had a fantastic time. I'm realizing though that a lot of things that made me happy weren't extravagant: time for yoga, selections of nice teas, healthy food, access to a sauna, time for walks, time for journaling, etc.) So now I'm back in the real world (and I'm in med school, so my life kind of sucks), but I'm trying to think of ways to re-create my time there, by adding small little luxuries to my own life. I can get the yoga down, and I've got new ideas for healthy foods, etc. But I'm wondering what small, simple things in your lives and homes make you feel nurtured and more relaxed. Thank you!

Professional jobs that require night or shift work?

My parents have always worked night shifts as a nurse at a geriatric support centre, and as a mail sorter for the post office. They make enough money. They've made their schedules work for them, and also raised 4 kids while doing so. Because of their shift work, they do get a lot of time off-- maybe working double shifts sometimes, or three 12-hour shifts in a row, but then they get 3 days off. They also tend to know their schedules a month ahead of time. I do not work well in a 9-5 M-F schedule, so I'd like to know what are other similar jobs to this. [more inside]

Tell me more about this Japanese TV show, Kamiwaza

I saw this cool demonstration of grace and balance on YouTube and now I want more. From the context, it looks like the 2013 champion of a Japanese TV Asahi show called Kamiwaza. If this is the champion, you'd think there'd be a dozen or two other performers who weren't quite as awesome as this, but were awesome enough to be worth watching. Google and YouTube don't seem to know much, though. (Although I did learn that Kamizawa is also a PS2 game and apparently a Polish cosmetic brand.) Can anyone tell me more about the show? How long has it been running on Japanese TV? Where can I see more?
