My dream is to have a travel bag that wears and is sized like a backpack but opens all the way up so I can pack it like a suitcase. I've seen a lot of Kickstarters lately for bags like this, but outside of this one bag I found on Amazon, I haven't really seen a lot of other bags in this vein. Are they really so uncommon? Are there more bags out there like this?
This specifically refers to flying WOW out of BWI, but I'd also like to hear from you if you've flown WOW anywhere else: At what point, and how often, do they weigh your bags? [more inside]

Taking the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Jack London Sq., but want to take the ferry to Pier 41 where I have a hotel waiting. But I've got luggage. Can I bring it on the ferry? No information on official site. Please help. Thanks so much! [more inside]
I need luggage for three situations and I'm hoping I can wind up with just two items (and not spend too much money). I need a rolling case for my MacBook Pro and books for school, a piece of carry-on luggage for an upcoming trip, and a sturdy but not too heavy suitcase. [more inside]
I have always checked baggage when flying due to a large suitcase. And there is something so liberating about just dumping the bag during check-in, and then jaunting through the terminal sans baggage. Tomorrow, I am going for a short trip and could pack everything into a regulation-size wheeled suitcase and thus do carry on. Both planes (+ 1 connection), are full to capacity. Is it worth the hassle of trying to find overhead? Schlepping it through two airports? Compared to the potential of losing my bag for the duration of my trip, which recently happened? What do you do? Strategies?
Currently I'm in Italy. In March I'll be travelling to Scotland by train and making stops along the way. Then I'll be flying home to Toronto. My problem is that I have a lot of luggage that I needed for an extended professional stay in Italy, but which will only serve to encumber me when I go traveling. What is the best way for me to forward one large (standard checked baggage) suitcase home to Canada from Italy when I head out? I would especially appreciate any advice based on personal experience. I'm flying to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul airport later this month. My flight arrives around 11 PM, but thanks to an unforeseen scheduling snafu, my ride won't be able to pick me up until early the next morning. Normally, I'd just hang out in the terminal overnight, but on this trip, I'll have a checked bag. What would happen if I just waited until the next morning to retrieve my suitcase from baggage claim? Air Canada WTF? On Tuesday I took a trip from Laguardia Airport to Pearson Toronto to CDG, Paris on Air Canada. From Toronto to Paris, they lost one of my bags, which wouldn't be terrible except said bas contained 1) My only change of clothes for the next 2 weeks 2) My BFs extra heart medication and 3) I'm leaving for Prague in 4 days and there is still no news. Is there anyone I can call or talk to see that I actually get my stuff before I leave France? Kakfaesque detail follows. [more inside]

When did the FAA/airlines stop asking those 2 questions about whether someone had given me something to bring on the plane, and whether my bags had been out of my possession at any point? What was their justification? I want to say that this changed after 9/11, but that doesn't really make sense.
