using pidgin/trillian i can automatically back up my chats to convenient plain text logs. using google chat i understand that chats are backed up to the google servers and you can search through them through gmail.com However i was wondering if there was anyway i could get a local copy of these chats preferably in plain text form? Maybe a program or script to help accomplish this? Thanks!

My mom and my brother are looking for a simple, solid online backup solution for their Windows XP computers.
I know that there are sites like
Carbonite,
Mozy, and
Crashplan. What I don't know is how good or simple any of these sites are or if there are others that are better that I just don't know about.
Also, how heavily does the background services these site's software install impact system performance?

What's the best way to back up a Debian Linux install? I have a virtual hosted Debian instance I use as a personal server, but right now I'm not doing anything to back it up. So what's the best way to do that? One thing I'd like to be able to do is take a snapshot of the entire installation, so that I could restore the entire system on another machine (or virtual machine) so that any software I'd installed would work and stay configured.

I need software that backs up my pictures to archival DVDs. It must do incremental backups, allow me to access the pictures without special software, allow me to set the DVD recording speed (so my archival DVDs don't get destroyed).
What app meets all three seemingly simple but yet mutually exclusive criteria?

Does anyone know where I can find the operating software and a manual for an HP Powerwise 2100 Battery Backup? APC bought HP's battery backups unit in 1994, but this unit seems to work great. I want to control it from my PC but have no software and no instructions. I've visited all of the manual sites and software download sites I can think of.

I am thinking about signing up for a service like Mozy, but I am just scared to pull the trigger? I have a lot of trouble trusting that there's no way anyone can get to my data. I'm not that important, but I suppose it could be useful to someone. Can someone explain in technical detail why I can or cannot completely trust the security surround a service like Mozy. I asked them, but they say their service is the best and it would never be compromised! Never ever! Ever!
