In the shower this morning, I had an idea about backup support for disk drives. Since all my best inventions either have fatal fundamental flaws or have already been invented years ago by other people, has anybody already done this one for Linux?

I have a media server (a Mac Mini) with several external HDDs hooked up to it. I'd like to transition to a storage solution that will be both tidier and more cheaply/easily upgradable. Challenge: I am very serious about backups and don't trust a system like a Drobo to handle redundancy.

It appears a virus has disabled my USB ports. I get the BSOD but can get to the Windows Recovery Console. I can see the USB ports in BIOS so how can I enable them? Bigger question is how to backup files from my hard drive while my PC is in this condition since it is not recognizing the USB?

Thought I hit it off with somebody I met through a mutual friend. There's been lots of fun chatting at parties, a bit of drunk flirting, but I fear I may have misread their intentions. After talking with both the mutual friend & this person, I'm starting to suspect that this person perhaps has feelings for the mutual friend.

I am about to backup my ipod on my mac and want to do two things: first, preserve my playlists and, second, merge tracks on certain compilations and mix-cd's
I also need to use my ipod on both mac + pc, and use it for data storage, so I know I'm off the prescribed path. Is there an app for this? :-)

I have two newish macbook pro laptops (with OS X 10.6) and want one to automatically and wirelessly back-up to the other one so will always have a "hot backup" on the second machine (I inherited the second one, so seems a reasonable use). FWIW, I have DSL with wireless modem in the house, so wouldn't want the ability for the machines to talk with each other to allow inadvertant access from anyone from the web. How to set it up?

I would like to learn more about large-scale UPS systems, particularly the battery strings used in traditional RBOC/Telco applications. These are the sort of beasts that use huge strings of 6V 220aH deep cycle batteries, or even large numbers of 2V 400aH batteries on very strong earthquake-resistant shelving wired up to create a 48V mega-battery. Can anyone point me to the most definitive reference materials on the subject?
