How can I efficiently harvest Google's entire cache of my website?

I stupidly let a web hosting account expire without backing up and transferring my site to my new server. I'm talking to the host to try to get access to my data (fingers crossed), but in case that does not work out: Is there a way to efficiently harvest Google's entire cache of a specific domain? Something else I should consider? I would like to act fast on this, and I don't have any programming/tech-fu skills.

I want to back up my file names, not my files

I need a utility or a script that will generate a text file containing the names of all the subfolders and files in the the folders I specify. I have automated full backups for all the important files on my computer. However, there are some folders that aren't worth backing up -- mostly music and videos that I've ripped from my own discs, copied from friends, or downloaded at some point or other. It wouldn't be a great loss if they were lost, but if so I'd like to know what I had lost so I can re-rip, buy or redownload the things I miss.

So I really just need something to generate something like a CSV file or just a easily-readable text file containing, hierarchically, all the subfolders and files in the folders I specify. I'd backup the resulting text file.

Google has failed me. Any suggestions? This is for a Windows 7 PC, but I should be able to do this from my Mac over the network if necessary.

Which home NAS with online backup for 2013?

I have a mess of ad-hoc backup systems, none of which “just work”. I would like to have a NAS that quietly backs up the cross-platform content I have, and also mirrors it online securely. I should probably budget for about 1-2 TB. I have no problem doing geeky setup stuff, but the less routine stuff I have to remember, the better. System details follow. These are the computers we have:

My MacBook, with about 300 GB on it. Backed up locally to a USB Time Machine (desperately, annoyingly slow) and mirrored to SpiderOak.

ms scruss's iMac (200 GB). Only locally backed up to a FireWire Time Machine.

An mp3 collection of about 300 GB, currently living on 6 year old USB drive connected to a SheevaPlug.

An old Linux box with pretty much my entire (online) life from 1991–2010 on it (300 GB).

Many little Linux boxes, from Raspberry Pis up to a ThinkPad, running various video/audio/multimedia/radio control applications around the house. Probably no more than 50 GB on all of them.

A D-Link DNS323 two-bay NAS running 5+ year old 1 TB WD drives. These drives are likely about to conk out any time now. Mirrors the music backup, and haphazard bits of everything else (when I remember). Likely has about 100 GB of stuff that's nowhere else

There's likely a ton of duplicate files on all of these. I'm unlikely to be bothered to go through and clean them up manually.

I have 25/10 DSL, and no bandwidth cap. I'm not wild about staying with SpiderOak; while its de-duping and security is rather good, its pricing and cross-platform/architecture support isn't. I would like to have occasional online access to files should I need them when I'm away.

The NAS would be on our wired network, and powered through a UPS. Swappable drives would be good; are home/office NASs there yet for seamless redundant drives? I'm not looking to run a desktop machine as a NAS, as they're too loud and draw too much power.

Service like Backupify that doesn't require Google Apps?

I am finally going to stop using a paper calendar and start using my laptop/iPhone/iPad instead. However, having used ol' reliable paper for so many years, I'm a bit paranoid about using Google calendar (or an app) and then losing all my data somehow... Is there an iPhone/iPad calendar app that would make me feel more "secure," or is there a service like Backupify that doesn't require a Google Apps account? I'd love to back up my Gmail too, if possible. (Am I just worrying too much? Is using iCloud enough? I am clearly clueless.)

How can I improve my sync/backup plan?

Currently my computer backup/sync setup seems to be working ok, but I think it can be improved. Please give me some ideas/suggestions. I have what I call my "master" computer. The computer is backed-up nightly on a network drive. I also backup the computer about once a month to an external hard drive (probably should be more often to the external drive).

I also have several other secondary computers that I use (some laptops and desktops). On these computers I use VPN to get to the "master" network and download/mirror the files from the "master" network. This is strictly a 1-way process (master network to secondary computers). If I alter a file on the secondary computer I use Google Drive or Dropbox to transfer files, then will eventually copy the files from the Dropbox/Google Drive folders to the "master" computer folders.

The method seems a little clunky, but it works ok. I could get a paid subscription to Dropbox or Google Drive and have all files sync across all computers, but I'm terrified at the thought of accidently deleting/changing a file on one computer and having it propogate to all computers. The current method adds a little extra security, because I have to manually copy a file to my "master" computer to include it.

Am I paranoid about maintaining a safe "master" computer? How could I streamline the process?

Test backup of a live WP site

I have a live Wordpress blog. I want to backup and restore it to another directory so I can test and try things before doing this on the live site. What's the best way to go about this? I just completed a site design and installation of a WP blog with outside help. It's not a high-end site with lots of custom code, just a fairly basic setup as far as I can tell. I would like to copy this site to another WP directory and use the copy to test things out. I don't like to make mistakes on a live site. They accumulate over time and it looks amateurish.
If I want to tweak the CSS, or see what a particular button does, I can give it a go on the backup site. If things get squirrely, I can redo the backup and restore to the test site so it is once again a copy of the live site.
I'm on Hostgator. I have a backup WP install on a 2nd account I control on HG so in this scenario I would be changing domains as well as directories.
I'm thinking I can take the backup files from the live site, and copy them over the test site's directory files. I'm wondering if it's going to break things beyond being useful to do so, or what's the best practice? TIA.

Why is Time Machine trying to backup so much?

Why is Time Machine trying to backup 35 GB of data every single day when I'm only using 300 GB of my 500 GB HD and I know I have not changed or added that much in the time since my last backup? I have a MBP running 10.6.8 that I am backing up and a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion (and Server) hooked up to a 2 TB external drive that acts as my NAS and Time Machine. The Mac Mini is connected to my wifi router via ethernet and acts as my home server. Using Mountain Lion Server, I've set it up as a Time Machine server as well.

Every time I come home and connect to the wifi network it does it's daily backup as expected, but it is so much bigger than expected. I was under the impression the backups were only supposed to copy new files or altered files, and there is no way I'm changing 10% of my drive each day at work...

Help me with my hard-drive indecisiveness!

Which is the best way to store and access my digital DVD collection? I *finally* backed up all of my DVD's (movies and tv shows) onto the hard-drive of my desktop computer, but I would like to put those files onto their own separate drive. I am trying to decide between a 1TB Western Digital Passport ($89) or a 1TB Western Digital 2.5" Internal Notebook HD ($96) and then getting a external hard-drive enclosure to put it in. I am leaning towards the WD Passport because of the price, USB 3.0 and because it's pretty darn small, but it seems like it is better used for intermittent back-ups, rather than a media server (but I could be totally wrong on that front). It won't be accessed all the time, only when I feel like watching something (say, a 2 hour movie or a few episodes of a show).

So Mefites, which hard-drive would be the best option for me? Is there another option that I am not thinking of? Thanks in advance for your help!

How can I get offsite backup for the 5gb data a day my library volunteer role generates?

Help me back up offsite the huge files I'm generating in my new voluntary role (c. 5Gb per session)! I'm volunteering for a library that has a very large quantity of author talks and readings on cassette tape. My job is to digitize these by creating an archive of .wav files. Using Adobe Audition, I'm storing one copy of each file on the Mac's hard drive, and one copy on a Western Digital 2-terabyte backup drive. Both of these are onsite, which is obviously not ideal. But I'm generating c. 5Gb of data every day, and I'd really appreciate some advice on how to store this offsite, away from fire and theft, in a way that works for the whole organization. Should I save everything onto a DVD at the end of the day, label it and take it home? (I have access to archive standard DVDs). Buying space on the Cloud wouldn't be a problem, but uploading so much might - any tips to make this easier? I don't want to clog up the pipes for other staff. Or am I missing something very obvious?

(The .wav files are to be reference recordings from which .mp3s will be created for download from the library's website in the fullness of time. I might be able to shift to other lighter lossless formats if the experienced heads here think that could be a way forward).

All advice very gratefully received!

The Invisible, Omnipresent Digital Backpack

I want to digitize everything, and I mean everything: DVDs, CDs, books, food… okay, not food, just the media. What should I keep in mind? How can I make this easy? (I've looked at some previous questions, and this one is the closest I found.)

My main concern is having my media be reliably accessible without (much of) a hassle.

CDs I have a process for, since a good amount of the sort of thing I like is only available in that form, and I only listen to the stuff digitally. It can be a bit of an involved process, though, since I often have to get the metadata manually. Then I rip the CDs to FLAC for archival purposes.

DVDs I have no process for. Some of what I have isn't really necessary to keep on hand, what with Netflix streaming and all. Other things aren't available on Netflix (or aren't always available — ugh, don't get me started). And I'm a bit of a fan of extra features, which are entirely exclusive to the physical media (or so I believe). I've ripped a few DVDs using Handbrake, but it's also an involved process and I end up just grabbing the main feature. I'm sure I could rip something with alternate audio tracks, just like the subtitle tracks, but I'm not that familiar with the process. And I don't also want to go through the hassle of ripping the featurettes separately. I might not mind just making disk images of the DVDs and figuring out what to do about video files later.

Books are more of a problem. I have a Kindle Touch, and I've already downloaded a few books I own and love to re-read, but I can't easily get them all. Some are free, some are strangely expensive, some have not-so-good formatting, some have a confusing number of editions, some are not available. And books can't be ripped (uh, in the same sense as the optical media).

I have a home server and a setup involving multiple external drives and rsync, but I'm already kind of tired of dealing with it and getting more so. It would be great to have all of my media "in the cloud", accessible anywhere and anytime. That seems kind of like a pipe dream, though, considering my travels can take me to places where I can hardly check my e-mail. But everywhere I go I have my laptop (MBP) and phone (Galaxy Nexus) with me, and now my Kindle as well.

I'd also like to offload/outsource/whatever the digitizing effort to someone else if possible. Are there good services for this out there? Is there someone with reasonable rates I can trust?

Does the PS3 "Backup Utility" actually back up PS1 and PS2 Virtual Memory Card savegames, or doesn't it?

Does the PS3 "Backup Utility" actually back up PS1 and PS2 Virtual Memory Card savegames, or doesn't it? The internet is full of contradictory or confusing answers to this question.

I've got an original "60GB" PS3. The one that has the hardware guts of a PS2 inside it.
At the time I bought it, I imported all of my old memory cards (from PS1 and PS2), then I threw out the memory cards and re-sold the USB memory card attachment thingamajigger.

Years later, I am finding myself wanting to get back into videogaming, seeing that everything is Downloadable these days, and hitting the limit of 60GB.
I have purchased a new, larger, hard drive.. and I just want to answer this simple question.

Will my Virtual Memory Card savegames be automatically updated as part of the Backup Utility option? Or do I need to back them up manually (which is a tedious process, since it's one-at-a-time and doesn't keep track of which memory card each one came from)?

Answers from actual experience preferred, since documentation and other google searches are somehow confusing the heck out of me.

How should I prepare for the looming demise of my personal laptop? My computer is plaintively signalling that it is not long for this world. I'm kind of at a loss about what I should be doing now to prepare. Backing up documents is easy, but what else can I be doing now?

I'm interested in what people often kick themselves for not getting off of a computer before it dies, and any techniques for extracting passwords, auto-fill data, bookmarks and other things that I probably take for granted.

It's a Windows 7 laptop with a student version of Microsoft Office on it, and I only use gmail and Chrome for email/web activity. It's safe to assume that I know nothing about IT admin backend things.

Thank you so much!

Help me delete duplicate files on an an eternal HD used to back up a Windows 7 laptop. I back up my laptop from time to time onto an external HD using iomega quikprotect (sic).

Not sure how this happened, but my backup drive contains 4 copies of every document, photo, etc. They are named, for example, photoname, photoname(1), photoname(2) and photoname(3).

How can I get back to having only one copy of each document and photo on my external drive?

I need help restoring an iPhone backup.

I need help restoring an old iPhone backup to a new phone. Today a friend took her iPhone 3GS in to get the battery replaced, and ended up walking out with a completely new phone. I wanted to help her restore the settings/data from the old phone but it's proving to be a challenge.

Before she went to the Apple Store, she did a full backup of the old phone. When I first plugged in the new phone, iTunes indicated that the iOS version of the phone didn't match the backup, so I had to first setup the phone as a new device, and then I could restore from backup.

Setting the phone up as a new device worked fine, but now when I right-click on it and try to restore the old backup, all I see is a backup made just minutes ago. What did I do wrong? Should I not have named the new phone the same as the old phone?

I found the old backup in C:\Users\Amanda\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup and it even shows up in iTunes under Edit|Preferences|Devices. There are two "Amanda's iPhone" backups listed there. What do I need to do to restore to the earlier backup and not the later one? "Restore" the device to a factory state and then restore the first backup? Rename one of the folders in MobileSync\Backup? I don't want to screw this up more than I already have!

Mac Backups: Retrospect or ???

I'm looking for a reliable way to backup 100 OSX client computers across the network. Currently these client computers are being backed up to a super old Retrospect server (running Retrospect 6 + OSX Server 10.2). There are obvious problems with this setup, and I'm trying to figure out the best system to transition to.

I don't have any experience doing client backups on the Mac - typically we have users store their files on a server, and then we back up the server. That's not an option in this area just yet.

Is Retrospect still the gold standard for Mac backups across a network? Is there other software or an appliance that does a better job? If you're in a similar situation, what solution are you using?

I'd like your thoughts on the Wolverine PicPac II or alternatives, please. So, I'm going abroad for three weeks to gather recordings for an ethnomusicology project. I'll need to need to back up my Sony "Memory Sticks" (ugh) on a regular basis. Since I'm going to be in the bush and/or stuck on extremely volatile public transportation for the majority of my time, I'd prefer to leave my expensive new laptop at home. Hence, I've been dreaming of the Wolverine PicPac II to back up my audio on the road.

Unfortunately, I'm none too impressed with the reviews I've seen for this device. I most frequently hear that it runs hot, takes forever to copy data, and has zero battery life. But I'd like to know whether anyone will vouch more positively for the PicPac, and/or what my current alternatives might be. It seems like such a perfect concept, but I don't want to be stuck with a bum device and no way to offload or back up my data.

(I have considered simply bringing a 1TB USB travel drive and hoping I find an Internet cafe every so often, but that's not necessarily a great risk either.)

What is the best method to force my remote users to backup their data. They all use MacBook Airs currently, and I'm looking for a good solution. I need something that they dont have to think about and they will be protected. I tried sending small external hdd's, flash drives, etc to people and having them use those for TimeMachine backups. Ultimately they would forget to insert the device thus making it not effective.

I'll need admin access within the solution in case I have to retrieve data for restores, etc.

Best cloud-based backup solution?

What is the best cloud-based backup solution? An associate writes: "I back up my desktop mac to a hard drive but I don't back up my laptop. Is there a cloud based backup you might suggest? I've heard of mozy and live mesh..."

I personally use Carbonite but I've never had to recover files so I dunno how reliable and easy to use it actually would be. This is something I've also been meaning to look into further for a long time, to see what else is out there.
Can't clone a drive - software can't see it but Windows can! Why?

I'm cloning a hard drive. Windows can see the new drive and access it, but none of the cloning software can access it, no matter how I format or set it up. What's going on here, and how do I fix it? I have a laptop running Win7 Pro. (If it's significant, it started life as WinXP Pro.) The hard drive is failing, so I'm replacing it. I intended to just use one of the many cloning utilities out there to set up the new drive, then scandisk it to fix the errors from the failing drive, just as I did many times in my time doing tech support. I've got the new drive hooked up via USB, and Windows can see it, read it, write to it - everything I can think of. It's got one big partition that Disk Management shows as Healthy (Active, Primary). I've formatted it. I also tried working with it unformatted, not set as active, etc. None of the cloning software I've tried can clone onto it. I've tried the following (with its errors):

CopyWipe (hangs at select target drive screen, tech support says it's due to having a USB keyboard, which I don't, or says the disk is formatted as 4096 byte sectors when the source is 512 - tried reformatting with 512-size allocation sectors, tried reformatting using an XP machine, no change)

Image for DOS, Linux, Windows (all that same 4096/512 error)

Clonezilla (target drive may be smaller than source? - it isn't, I'm cloning an 80GB onto a 250GB)

DriveImage XML (says I don't have a partition on the new drive, even though I can see the dang thing and access it)

XXClone (can't even see the drive at all)

WTF is going on? What am I missing? The OEM drive in the machine is a Hitachi, the new one is WD, both SATA. But I've never seen that cause something like this?

After 3 days and 7 cloning programs, I'm losing it. Help!

Best way to back up photos and other media assets

I am trying to establish a good backup strategy for my digital media assets (photos, music, and some home videos) and documents. Would love to hear from you on on whether this makes sense ... Here is what we have:

We have our 2011 photos, digital music and other sundry documents in an iMac. Photos (in JPEG) and other documents from the last few years are in a Dell laptop that we have stopped using (this is backed up in a Windows formatted external hard drive). These are under 50 GB. Photos older than a few years are in a carton in films, slides and negatives.

I have started shooting photos with a certain amount of intensity again this year (after several years). I probably add between 100 to 150 RAW images every week to the iMAC (unless I am travelling when that number really shoots up). From what I am reading, I think I should assume a few hundred gigs of space for my digital photos every year (going forward). I am getting Adobe Lightroom (this will replace iPhoto) and hope to use it as my primary photo cataloging software. I currently have a 1 TB hard disk in the iMac and I bought a Western Digital external drive that has 1.5 TB storage.

Here is what I think I should do:

-- Set up Time machine to backup everything other than photos into the 1.5 TB external drive
- Use Lightroom to set up the same external hard drive as the primary storage for Photos
- Use the 120 GB external drive for backing up the photos for now (using Lightroom for backup of photos) for now. Migrate to a bigger external storage later on in 2012 (when needed)
- My mediam term project will be to digitize the non-digital photo, tag them as best I can and move them to the same Light room library and backup

Does this approach make sense? Is there a better /simpler way of accomplishing this (without incurring considerably higher cost)?

Would love to have your thoughts, recommendations or any other suggestions in this area.

Data rescure on an iphone when backup/restore doesn't work

Please help me salvage data on my perfectly functional iphone. How can I copy and restore data if ituens sync doesn't work? So, after upgrading to 5.0.1 from 4, when I went to restore from the backup, there was an error message that itunes was interrupted during the backup. I licked continue, itunes tried to complete the backup, and generated an error message (-54).

On the phone, all of the apps, SMS, contacts and mail are intact and work, but there is no music. In the itunes pane, there is the normal storage used for apps/contacts/etc, but there's 10gig of "other." Now both sync and backup fail when the phone is connected to itunes

I'm almost certain that something is corrupted in the file storage/directory on the phone so that there's music on the iphone that's not being recognized as such, but also taking up space and disrupting the backup/sync process.

Calling in to apple care just got me directed to try restoring a three more times, and then the answer that I'd just need to set it up as a new phone, losing all app/SMS data (even though it is currently intact on the phone). In person support at the Apple store came up with the same answer. (Unfortunately, this less-thank-helpful support had the side effect of overwriting all of the other recent backups with the same corrupt data.)

So I have a couple of questions on how best to handle this, because I really care about the data, and it seems crazy that there's no solution when all the data I care about is intact and functional on the phone.

1) is it useful to try to escalate this with apple? I only spoke to the first level rep on the phone, so it's possible I could get to speak to a specialist who knows more?
(I paid for applecare, so I'm a little pissed that a) they gave bad advice that overwrote other backups and b) they have no options than to run the user level process and observe that it doesn't work)

2) Is this something that a data recovery service could deal with? I'd be happy to pay $100 just to have it fixed.

3) Does anyone have experience with iphone programs such as phone to mac or iExplorer? If I go with a solution that requires jailbreaking, can I "unjailbreak" once I've gotten all the data back?

Thanks for any advice!

Tech Specs: iphone 4, IOS 5.0.1, itunes 10.5, technical proficiency - medium, programming proficiency - zero

12 hours to copy 96GB. Is that right? I'm manually backing up my Aperture library from one USB 2.0 drive to another but OSX (Snow Leopard) is telling me it will take 12-16 hours to complete.

I smell a rat. I've checked both disks with Disk Utility and both appear to be okay.
Help me implement version control and offsite backups for my thesis

I'm just starting my undergraduate thesis, and would like a backup method a bit more reliable then my standard 'ThesisV3.tex' + emailing it to myself method. I've never worked with version control before, though I'm sure I can figure that out. I am however worried about *where* to have my offline backup sync too. I'm just starting my undergraduate thesis in chemistry and would like to keep a current backup of all my files as I go. Some form of version control seems obvious, but I'm not sure how I would go about setting this up, and where I would backup my files to.

Alright, here are my requirements:
-Has to handle all types of data: I will have tex files, which are plain text, and would like change tracking in those. I'll also have PDF files of papers, image files, and folders of NMR data. I need these all to be preserved, including directory structure and everything. I'd like it to keep versions of the images and binary blobs as well, so that I don't have to change the filename in the LaTeX file every time I make a new version of the spectrum or diagram, I can just save over and recompile, but still be able to go back to the old version if I want to for some reason.

-I need to be able to work on all my files while offline, then sync them back. It is not uncommon for me to work when I don't have internet, so I don't want to be locked out of my files.

-Related, if I get booted off the sever during a synchronization I don't want everything screwed up. Uni wireless kicks me off every 3 hours. I really don't want to lose everything due to it kicking me off halfway through a sync.

-I'm not sure where/how to put the remote copy. I've got a friend who has some webspace with Powweb.com, is there anyway I can set up a version control system in that? If not are there cheap/free services for this?

-My laptop is Windows 7, though I've got experience in *nix environments (Probably obvious from the fact I'm using LaTeX) Her websapce is a Unix environment of some sort. I have no problem with installing Cygwin or Minsys or whatever.

If there isn't an easy way to set this up without paying $$$ for server space somewhere I guess I could use her webspace with an FTP client and my traditional naming system or something.

Thank you for your help,
I am a PC Windows/Word/Scrivener user with Dropbox and Google account; I want to write lengthy prose on the move (at cafes, hotels etc.) using my new WiFi iPad 2 with Apple keyboard and keep my text safely synced/compatible/accessible back at home. What apps, accounts do I need? I'm concerned about accurate, raw text - formatting and fonts are not important. Also I'm after a pleasing but no-frills writing experience on the iPad. Googling has not given me what I need, and the word-processor apps available are not clear on their compatibility and back-up provisions. I need paragraphed text that can travel cleanly from home PC to iPad and back, and vice-versa, without email shenanigans, in file form.
