My back hurts.

I've had a lot of pain in my lower back for the last five days or so. There's no obvious cause that I can think of but it seems to be getting worse, not better. It's at the point now where standing up is taxing, even after taking ibuprofen. Any suggestions? [more inside]

What am I doing wrong with my new rucksack?

I bought a 50 litre rucksack to take on a hiking holiday this summer. I do a lot of walking and am used to carrying a 25 litre backpack with no problems. Yesterday I lightly packed the 50L bag and took it out on a easy hike to start getting used to it, but over the course of the day I strained my upper back, between my shoulder blades. I don't think there's anything wrong with the bag - what am I doing wrong? [more inside]

Exercise video recommendations for lame 30-somethings with sore backs?

I'm looking for a couple good exercise videos that will help me increase my core strength and then hopefully alleviate my lower back pain. My abs have been weak ever since I had a baby, and now that said baby is a 25 pound squirming mass of toddler muscle, I have pretty chronic back pain from constantly picking him up and hauling him around. I'm looking for a video that I can do in my basement after the kiddo goes to bed, and one that requires minimal equipment. I've taken pilates classes in the past and liked it - yoga was always kind of boring to me, but I'm willing to try it out again. The DVD selections at my local library trend toward senior citizen chair exercise videos, so any specific video recommendations would be much appreciated. [more inside]

I need a pillow for reading in bed

I need a pillow for when I'm sitting up in bed reading/computing so I stop screwing up my back trying to get comfortable. There are a lot of options, though! What's best for back/neck support? Traditional reading pillows (the kind with arms) or wedge pillows? What material will work well for this?

I haven't got time for the pain ...

I've got a herniated disc (L5-S1) that is causing excruciating pain across the top of my right foot. I've had 2 of 3 lumbar epidurals (3rd one is scheduled for Sept. 5) which, thus far, have not helped. I have a consult with an orthopedic surgeon scheduled for Sept. 11. I've got vicodin, flexeril and OTC naproxen. But these are doing far too little to alleviate the pain. My question: Any tips, ideas on how to deal with this pain for the next 2-plus weeks without going crazy. Snowflakes within ... [more inside]

I need a plan for helping my sore (not painful) back.

My back has been sore for 6 weeks, probably due to sitting all day plus overdoing exercise. It was a little sore before that, but in the past 6 weeks it’s been more noticeable. I've been taking it easy on my back in terms of exercise, but it still hasn’t healed completely, and I don't want this to go from sore now to painful later. I'm overwhelmed with the advice for taking care of my back – help me come up with a plan. [more inside]

Definitely not crunch time

Annoyingly, crunches irritate a bulging disc in my back. Since I'm not keen on having surgery just so I can do this one thing (the disc doesn't otherwise bother me, as long as I keep my core strong), what alternatives to crunches can I try? If it matters: I do already do push-ups, planks and side planks.

Help me not hate my new Aeron chair

Due to long-standing back/shoulder/neck pain, I received an Aeron chair at work a couple of months ago. It has helped in one way (namely, the armrests can be adjusted lower than any other chair I've had, which has helped my shoulders) but otherwise has completely aggravated my lower and mid-back pain. Help me figure out a hack so that I can actually sit at my desk for longer than 10 minutes at a time without going nuts. [more inside]
