Debunking Dr John Sarno / TMS / Healing Back Pain

Can someone help me understand or explain why there seem to be so many people (including many on the green) who have claimed to have been helped by Dr Sarno's books and his whole 'TMS' diagnosis? Back injury and pain

Last week my wife fell out of our hammock and hit her upper back against the ground-level metal bar of the hammock stand. Seven days later, she is still in constant pain, but x-rays of cervical spine came up with no fractures, and there's no visible bruising. Her primary care physician prescribed bed rest to go with her previously-prescribed ibuprofen and flexeril for MS. Do you have any other suggestions to help her manage the pain and recover?

YANMD, but what do I ask my doctor about this hip/back pain? (In my 20s)

YANMD, but until I can see a doctor, I'm looking for guidance on what questions to ask. Student, mid-20s, male, non-smoker, somewhat overweight (not obese) but relatively healthy otherwise. I don't remember injuring my back or hip recently. Recently, after sitting or standing in place for long periods of time, I develop terrible radiating, bilateral pain in my lower back, right above my buttocks. It feels like I got home from two weeks of skiing! I have to stretch and walk around, and it gets better with exercise. What exercises should I do, and what questions should I ask my doctor? Does persistent back pain/tightness ever get "cured"?

I have had a persistently tight "knot" in my upper-right back for at least five years now, with the pain level varying over time. I've tried stretching, chiropractors, foam rollers/lacrosse balls, and massage off and on throughout the years. No permanent improvement. Will this ever get fixed, or will it be with me forever? Sciatic nerve pain: Any advice?

YANMD; I am seeing my doctor about this, but I'd be grateful for any wisdom from the hivemind. For a long time, I've been fairly physically active without suffering any significant problems or injuries. I'm 38 and have been going to the gym about 3 times a week since my 20s, and I go hillwalking regularly. In January of this year, I started to experience pain and stiffness in my lower back. I went to my doctor, who referred me to a physiotherapist. After a couple of sessions with the physio, the stiffness went and I got a good range of movement back, but I started to experience much sharper pain in my right thigh, of the classic sciatic nerve variety. Exercise video recommendations for lame 30-somethings with sore backs?

I'm looking for a couple good exercise videos that will help me increase my core strength and then hopefully alleviate my lower back pain. My abs have been weak ever since I had a baby, and now that said baby is a 25 pound squirming mass of toddler muscle, I have pretty chronic back pain from constantly picking him up and hauling him around. I'm looking for a video that I can do in my basement after the kiddo goes to bed, and one that requires minimal equipment. I've taken pilates classes in the past and liked it - yoga was always kind of boring to me, but I'm willing to try it out again. The DVD selections at my local library trend toward senior citizen chair exercise videos, so any specific video recommendations would be much appreciated. [more inside]

I need a plan for helping my sore (not painful) back.

My back has been sore for 6 weeks, probably due to sitting all day plus overdoing exercise. It was a little sore before that, but in the past 6 weeks it’s been more noticeable. Definitely not crunch time

Annoyingly, crunches irritate a bulging disc in my back. Since I'm not keen on having surgery just so I can do this one thing (the disc doesn't otherwise bother me, as long as I keep my core strong), what alternatives to crunches can I try? If it matters: I do already do push-ups, planks and side planks.
