Withheld information on a pre-employment health check. Now what?

I'm in the background check stage of a job in health care. I foolishly didn't disclose something from my medical history on my occupational health check. I would be grateful for any advice about what to do, but particularly from people based in the UK. This post discusses self-harm. [more inside]

How can I do a background check on someone? (arrest & conviction record)

I run a nonprofit and believe there is a need to learn the arrest and conviction record of one of our volunteers, including misdemeanors that occurred in another state. So, I'm trying to learn how to do an inexpensive background check on him. There are number of online services and I'd like to know which one is the best or if there's a better way. [more inside]

Should I preemptively tell a new employer about a recent bankruptcy?

I'm hoping to start a new job soon and the company has extended an offer which I have accepted. However the offer is contingent on the results of a background check which I understand is either in progress or will be performed shortly. The problem is that this background check will show that I filed for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy early this year and received a discharge shortly thereafter. So while I wish I could take this moment to celebrate a great new opportunity, I'm afraid that the offer might be rescinded at any moment due to this new information. [more inside]

Seeking fellow victims...

Reading the news articles about the accusations of rape made against Bill Cosby has suddenly made me resolutely certain of the fact that my rapist has had other victims. Problem with hireright background check

My foreign husband found his dream job in the US (already working in the US in a different job, not dependent on job for green card) and underwent a background check with hireright. Hireright completed its report and has said that his university has no record of his education. This is categorically not true. [more inside]

Background Check Inconsistencies

I am currently undergoing a fairly extensive background check in order to work at a financial institution. It's been Kafkaesque. The background check company found some major inconsistencies in my reported employment dates, but the thing is -- I know (and can prove) that it's my former employers who have the dates wrong. The company doing the background check has refused to accept my documentation (W2s, contact info for supervisors who can confirm the dates, etc.). Should I pro-actively contact my potential employer to explain, or wait for them to contact me? [more inside]

Help Me Find this Online Service (if it still exists)

Quite a few years ago, I recall ordering a sort-of "background check" online, only it didn't just have the usual criminal background, legal stuff, etc.--it also had details about the way the person looked, their interactions with their family, personality tendencies and such. It was a little spooky, actually, all the personal details it included. [more inside]

Best site for conducting employee background checks?

I'm involved in a fairly new business which is small but growing pretty fast. We figure it'd be a good idea to start doing background checks (primarily concerned with criminal/sex-crime record) on new hires, but I'm not sure what's the best way to go about it. When I research online there're dozens of options which I've listed below. Intellius / Talentwise and US Search seem to be the best known and reputable ones, but also the most expensive. If I go with one of the more no-name sites, such as criminal-records.org, am I taking a risk that their database is incomplete/outdated, or even that using them doesn't comply with employment law (DPPA, FCRA)? Can my job search please be over already?

I will graduate from college in a week. Two weeks ago, I got an email from an institution that I had done a job interview with saying, "We would like to move forward in the process" and asking to do a background check on me. I filled out the paperwork and faxed it back immediately. They still haven't gotten back to me. (I know my background is clean, as I've passed two other background checks recently.) How good should I feel about my prospects here? Was I wrong in assuming that the background check was a prelude to an employment offer?
