Please help me find a good desktop background image, with which to celebrate the election of Barack Obama as 44th president of the USA. Right now I've got
this one up, but Barack's head is all down in the corner and it's hard to appreciate.

This week an organization I work with is running a big, high energy (iPhone and Wii giveaways, the whole 9 yards) event geared towards high-school students. I'm tasked with organizing some of the creative/design aspects of it, but I've hit a few dead ends, specifically in the area of what I would call ambient video.

Legally, what would you call refusal to adhere to city/government by-laws to fingerprint or background check volunteer workers? I imagine it's a fairly serious crime. Location in Canada preferably, but US examples welcome.

I'm applying for jobs that require a local law enforcement background check, and I suspect that it's turning up information that's [really] detrimental to being hired! What kind of information could they be finding? How could I find out what's on my background check? Finally, is there any way to delicately address these issues in job applications/cover letters without digging myself into a hole?

Austin Mefites: I need to find a location not too far (say within 1/2 hour max drive time) of Austin, anywhere in the area, that looks desert-y. Sure I could drive on out to any # of places in the middle of Texas, but I don't have that much time available on the day of this particular photo shoot I'd like to do. A big, open flat & sandy area that I could have my car in if I needed to would be ideal.

Though I never lied about anything, they might uncover that my past year has in fact been really spotty in terms of work (during interviews, we talked about my contract projects, but they didn't ask about specific dates or durations). Does this make me screwed?

I prefer no background, and my wife wants a panda-movie screensaver. After the latest set of patches, Win XP (SP-2) suddenly started changing them, putting a new random one up on each reboot. I've repeatedly gone into Control Panel | Display and reset them, being careful to click Apply each time, but they don't stick.
I assume it takes a registry hack. Can anyone help?

Background checks: I have a job interview coming up, and wonder if they'll do a credit check. If they do, I'm in trouble. I need this job very badly...thus the bad credit. Besides credit, employers may check education and criminal backgrounds (mine are clean), but do they have to let you know? How do you ask a potential employer about this without raising flags? While we're on it, is there a secret shit-list out there that employers may go to to see if you're a loser? Especially in software/web development in the northwest...

Is there any way to remove background images from a PDF file? I downloaded some documentation for the Mambo Server, and it has an incredibly annoying, large, pixelated orangeish logo as a BG on every page, which doesn't help readability one bit. Have tried inserting a new white background in Acrobat, but it ends up behind the original one.

Win2K - I had a risque pictue set as my desktop background. My in-laws are coming to stay for a week, and my machine is in the guest room. Since I already don't rate very highly with then, I swapped the background image to something very tame. However, during the startup process, the original image appears for a couple of seconds before being replaced by the new. Why does this happen, and how can I fix it?

Photoshop gurus: I've got a rectangular photo, which I plop down in the middle of a colored background. I'd like to create a smooth transparency
gradient in the photo with respect to the background (more transparent at the top, opaque at the bottom). How would one do this?
(Specifically, I'm contructing a header image for a website... the top of the header is a solid color, with logo, etc. in it, while the bottom of the header is the photo. I'd like the solid area to dissolve into the photo).
Thanks- if anyone ever needs PHP/Postgresql advice, let me know!
