Govt. job requires background check, how to be truthful without looking bad. [more inside]
Around 1997-99, one of the common background choices was a figure walking uphill (from left to right), through fir trees and snow as I recall. Not sure if it was an overexposed photo or a drawing. Very little detail -- stark. I think it was a Windows choice, but it might have been a manufacturer's -- HP, for example. Hope me!
When you go to a website in Chrome, there's a flash of the default white non-website before the website itself loads. I've figured out how to change the default colors of the website itself (there's an app for that), but not for that first flash. Or for popups, evidently (thank you MeFi for giving me the opportunity to learn that now!). That white screen before the page loads is not only blinding, but also often triggers both facial pain and migraines. I'd really like it to be darker - anything would help, dark gray or black preferred. Help?
Please help me change my Twitter background to anything other than plain, boring, bright white. [more inside]
I'm hoping to start a new job soon and the company has extended an offer which I have accepted. However the offer is contingent on the results of a background check which I understand is either in progress or will be performed shortly. The problem is that this background check will show that I filed for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy early this year and received a discharge shortly thereafter. So while I wish I could take this moment to celebrate a great new opportunity, I'm afraid that the offer might be rescinded at any moment due to this new information. [more inside]
I am looking for journalistic organizations that, (1) provide statistical number crunching and (2) legal interpretation to help to reporters working on complex stories. Whenever I've had an ethical question, I sought the help of Poynter, but on this current project, I need more specific help. Are there non profit journalistic entities whose mission is to help freelance reporters and/or their organizations with their legal and quantitative research?

A headshot was recently taken of me by a friend, in front of an orange brick wall with a repeating interlocking Greek meander pattern (here is an example). I love the photo: finally, I look capable and presentable. But... does that pattern look too much like the Nazi cross? Should I try to get a new background? [more inside]
I want boring music to listen to. Not even elevator music: hallway music. Dull, faceless corridor music. Cheesy, soothing, soft. Commercial music, the kind of music that men in the 1970s thought would induce people to feel groovy and buy stuff. The music that plays in Animal Crossing while you get your haircut. Ceefax music. Music you'd hear in an old Mad Men episode. Music that just sits there and doopey-doops while I concentrate and get important stuff done.
I am currently undergoing a fairly extensive background check in order to work at a financial institution. It's been Kafkaesque. The background check company found some major inconsistencies in my reported employment dates, but the thing is -- I know (and can prove) that it's my former employers who have the dates wrong. The company doing the background check has refused to accept my documentation (W2s, contact info for supervisors who can confirm the dates, etc.). Should I pro-actively contact my potential employer to explain, or wait for them to contact me? [more inside]

Quite a few years ago, I recall ordering a sort-of "background check" online, only it didn't just have the usual criminal background, legal stuff, etc.--it also had details about the way the person looked, their interactions with their family, personality tendencies and such. It was a little spooky, actually, all the personal details it included. [more inside]
In the 1948 movie The Red Shoes, there is a scene (search YouTube for "Vicky Page is offerred her first lead role"; about 45 seconds into the clip) where Victoria Page ascends the stairs to Lermontov's villa. In the background is a view of the Mediterranean and the sound of an Italian tenor singing to orchestral accompaniment. Can anyone identify singer (and song)?

Husband and I are seeking a rental home. We found a nice house and the landlord has invited us to apply. Last time we applied for rental the property manager had us do a credit/background check via an online service. This new landlord gave us a paper form asking for SSN, DOB, our checking and savings account numbers, employment history, and other info. The landlord is an older person with a couple investment properties. I'm sure this is not a scam, but I am reluctant to hand all my ID and bank numbers to a stranger. Advice? Anyone know a simple, reputable online background checking service that I can suggest to this landlord? We would pay the fee. My goal is to make the landlord comfortable so we can lease the house. The Seattle rental market is very tight. This landlord has his pick of many worthy applicants. We have excellent credit, references, etc.
I found a background check service at one point that showed a summary of each paycheck my employer issued to me, including bonuses and other payments, and I believe my Social Security number was required in order to retrieve the report. I can't locate the service again. Are there any out there that still offer such a service?

I was fired from a retail job back in 1994. I worked there 6 months. The firing could have been argued but I left. I have a job interview tomorrow requiring a background check. I don't want to lie but I don't want to tell the truth as it is so damn long ago and a ridiculous thing....and that job is long long long gone from resume replaced with great work and academic history. Does a routine background check dig up that old dirt? Thanks for your time and have a good week.

Offered a professional level job at PG&E. I would be driving a company car, but not all the time - desk job with field duty. On the online application I indicated that I do not have any criminal convictions (i.e. felonies, misdemeanors, etc.) For fear of not getting an interview at all, I replied in the negative. However, I have one misdemeanor DUI from almost seven years ago. They will be performing a background check. I know they really want me - they offered me the job within a day of interviewing. Does the background check go back this far? Am I screwed or will I have the opportunity to explain myself if it comes up? HR has not gotten to me to do the check yet. What, if anything, should I do?
