In just about five and a half months, I'm going to be having my first child. Super exciting -- except I have absolutely no idea how all this works and I don't know where to begin. Help me! [more inside]
Very sleep deprived mom here at my wit's end, hoping you can help with strategy. Tried many different things without success. Baby wakes up 3-7 times a night to nurse back to sleep, has never slept through the night. Should we night wean? Sleep train? How to do this without too much pain and stress on either of us. Scared to sleep train, but really really really tired. [more inside]
I would like to give a subscription for diaper delivery to a friend. I want to make sure I do it right, though. Does anyone have experience with diaper subscriptions? [more inside]
My 4-month-old loves reading eye-catching books, but I am a bit bored with the ones we have. Help me find some more, with examples inside. [more inside]
I have spectacularly flaked on a friend's new baby and am now looking to buy a welcome gift for a ~9-month-old. It's also a second baby, so they'll already be overstocked with gear, clothes, toys and books. To be worthwhile, this will have to be monumentally awesome, and/or personalized to the particular baby. What should I get? [more inside]
Your child ate what? I'm fairly certain that Baby Tafetta swallowed herself one of the filters from the Nosefrida Snot Sucker this evening. The blue filter consists of moisture absorbing polyurethane. I tried unsuccessfully to sweep out her mouth a couple of times but found nothing. She was otherwise fine and finished her bottle before going to sleep. [more inside]
Hi! I'm pregnant with my first child, due in early spring. I just found out that I can teach a short (college) summer school course that starts about 10 weeks after I'm due. (Who knows, if I'm late, it could be just 8 weeks.) The pay is very good, and we kind of need it, but I don't want to sign up for something I'll regret. [more inside]
This is a two part question: 1. Some very nice people threw several baby showers for me. In searching past AskMe questions on baby etiquette I was horrified to learn that I should have given them hostess gifts! Help me figure that out. 2. Our baby has been showered with a mountain of gifts, some of these gifts have been multiple gifts from the same person/people. Do I send a separate thank you note for each time an individual has given me a gift? [more inside]
I'm currently 31 weeks pregnant, and this afternoon I'm heading into a "meet and greet" with a new pediatrician at a practice affiliated with the big multi-specialty doctor group in my town. At this point, we're thinking it's pretty likely that we'll either go with the pediatrics group or with the family practice group where my PCP practices, and I had set up this meet and greet to help try to make that decision. However, it's now 5 hours until we head over and I have no clue what to ask this doctor to help us make a decision. I am sure others have probably gone through this before--so help me figure out what to ask! [more inside]
So I just read that the American Academy of Pediatricians recommends zero TV exposure for kids under two. I read that after we had worked our way through Ripper Street and Sons of Anarchy with 2 month old baby Merocet feeding and occasionally watching the screen. I have also let her see a couple of episodes of Waybuloo. I am scum. [more inside]
Our first child is due in the next few weeks! This isn't a question about getting ready - we've done a lot of preparation (see inside). I want to know how you enjoyed those first crazy weeks. Were you able to relax into the sleep deprivation and rhythm-less newborn life? Do you look back on those days fondly? We expect to be tired and frazzled, but we want to intentionally savor this special time. We will have ~8 weeks at home together with our baby. Tell me how you did it. [more inside]
I'm looking for resources (books, websites, etc.) to help me gain a balanced perspective on whether or not motherhood is right for me, given my anxieties and health issues. [more inside]
Friends of mine will be new parents! I want to get them a sweet-ass gift. They have a wish list but say they welcome any other gifts not on it if especially good. Veteran parents, what did you wish you had when your baby came along? [more inside]
Should I work on getting a new, hopefully long-term job before getting pregnant, or should I stay in my not ideal but okay current job? Snowflakes inside... [more inside]
So we have started giving our baby some formula feeds (after advice from medical professionals. We are well aware of the benefits of breast feeding, and still do it as much as possible). [more inside]
My four month old cries when we are putting her to sleep, she doesn't like going to sleep. How do we get to her to go down to sleep quietly (we're not ready for cry it out)? [more inside]
Baby Mr. Fuga will be appearing in March. We'd like to name her some form of a name that can be shortened to Charlie. Charlotte is out, for various reasons, as is Charlene. Any ideas?
Baby Taffeta is 11 months old now and has a great appetite. The problem is she also has a great gag reflex, enlarged adenoids and difficulty with textured foods. We're finding it harder and harder to find foods for her that help her transition to solids that she won't gag on but that will help her get full enough so that she can hopefully sleep through the night. [more inside]
I am back at work 2 days a week, and my 3 month old will not take a bottle. Have been googling non-stop, and feel like we have tried everything. What worked for your baby?? [more inside]
My daughter's first birthday is coming up in two weeks, and we're having a party. The invitations emphasized "one", so that's the theme. What "one"-themed things can I do, for food or decorations? [more inside]
Hi all. Mrs Professorpotato will be giving birth to our first child in late November. We need to upgrade from a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic to something suitable for a baby + all its stuff (seat, pram, accessories), a small dog, and two loving parents. We're looking at a 2013 Jetta in the 17K range as we don't drive much but need reliable transportation. The Sonic has about a 12-14K trade in value and about 22K owing (debt consolidation + depreciation). We can comfortably afford payments of $400-500 per month. Anyone been in a similar situation? Tips? Thanks. PP.
There's a conference I'd like to go to in Austin at the beginning of November, but Minipenny is still breast feeding which complicates things. Misterpenny and I talked about making it a short family trip. A couple of days (well, day and a half) on our own and then a day and a half (and at least one evening) of him being on full childcare duties and me at the conference. I used to have the conference travel down, and enjoyed getting to see a bit of a new city, but it's a whole new ballgame now...we've never traveled with the baby, and have never been to Austin, so I'm having trouble knowing how to go about the planning, or if this is even a good idea. I want to eliminate some of my son's nighttime feedings and start sleep training him. Am I going about this right? [more inside]
I would like to give my friends baby things that they may not be able to get in Germany. [more inside]
Our 20 week old daughter (who was 7 weeks premature) was screaming as loud as she can, I had never heard her scream as loud.I found our nanny pouring water over her in the baby bath, she was shivering uncontrollably and her teeth were chattering. I insisted the nanny take her out and warm her up immediately. The nanny insisted that it was a 'normal' bath. I checked the water and it was barely warm. The nanny insists that she knows best and that I shouldn't interfere. I don't think it is acceptable for a small baby to take 15-20 minutes to stop shivering after a bath. What should we do about this?
My 14 month old baby has crying thrashing wakeful periods during the night on a semi-regular basis (roughly speaking, perhaps once every fortnight). He wakes up crying and can’t be consoled – arches his body and pushes away from me while in my arms (but cries harder if put down in his cot). [more inside]
My husband's boss just told him that he won't be able to take time off for the delivery of our baby. What should we do? [more inside]
We have a foscam webcam with night vision and the works. We can access it via wifi on our phones and computers, but want a dedicated screen to use as a baby monitor. Portable and/or plug-in... what are our options? Thanks!
It's almost baby-time (our first) and we're still in the process of getting stuff we need (or just think we might need.) There's a very obvious and willing source in my sister-in-law, who has very generously offered SO MANY THINGS to us, all of which we would love to have, espcially for free. The problem is that she smokes and everything that comes out of her house smells like cigarettes. This is a two-parter. [more inside]
My sister and brother-in-law are visiting me in NYC this week with their 3 month old. What are some things you and yours have found to be essential for operating in the city with a baby? Bonus question: tips for navigating the two-seciton R-train? [more inside]
I have a clingy little infant and have been using a ring sling with mediocre results. The problem is that it seems my infant's too floppy in the ring sling and I'm lusting after an Ergo. Is this a worthwhile investment or do I just need to figure out how to use the ring sling better/position my baby better? I'd like to be able to carry my baby while having complete use of my hands and--this is especially important--being able to bend over for cleaning, laundry, errands, etc. without having to use my hands or worry about slippage. And if your answer to the above is that I should get a non-ring sling carrier, is Ergo what you would recommend?
I am a 32 year old female and have a full-time job. I've been working from home for 6 years now. My boyfriend and I are talking about marriage and having a baby. We're trying to figure out if it's going to be possible for me to still work full-time from home while also raising a baby. I found a lot of articles about it being possible to cut back on hours or work part-time only, but I don't want to do that (insurance and financial reasons). He works full-time as well and not from home and we want to try to avoid day care (or at least use it minimally). Has anyone ever successfully done this? If so, I'd love to know how. What was good/bad about it?
Considering starting a family but what happens when baby comes? Do I stay home and he works? Does he stay home and I work? Snowflake details inside, basically help me evaluate my options. [more inside]
I'm considering paying for a sleep consultation (examples here and here) because we are getting pretty worn out with Baby Tafetta and her sleeping issues. Has anyone tried these? Is there someone else to recommend? Should I continue just reading random experts and waiting for things to get better? Is all of this really just because of the recent events of the past month and now we're just trying to get back to where we were? [more inside]
We are trying to think of names for our impending baby girl. I am American and my husband is Japanese. We plan to give her an English first name, Japanese middle and last name. We have settled on a middle name, Miyuki (美幸). So her name thus far is _______ Miyuki xxxxshi. Criteria for English name: must be easily writable in katakana (For example, Wi- isn't great, or Gl-, or x. All of these sounds can be written, but they come out complicated.) must not sound silly in Japanese (this is subjective and related to .) must not end in a long e sound, since middle and last names already do. Prefer a classical name (i.e. something my Grandma would recognize as a name) but no need for it to be especially popular right now. We'll probably avoid the top five or ten most popular names. We are NOT looking for names that do double duty (which is what most of the threads I've found are about). So, not Naomi (always the first name that gets trotted out in these situations). We want a name from each culture that the grandparents on the opposite side can pronounce and that the kid can write when she gets to kindergarten. I'd especially appreciate input from fluent Japanese speakers here, and/or members of mixed families. Thanks!
I’m currently expecting my first child, who is due around Halloween. I have some minor and probably totally inconsequential—yet nagging—worries about her expected birthdate, and would love if those of you who are late fall babies OR a parent of a late fall baby would come in and assuage my concerns. I am looking for an album of classic lullabies. Any recommendations for a good one? Prefer one with vocals. (Will also take recommendations for non-classic lullaby songs that are good for rocking a baby to sleep!) Thanks!
My 9-month-old, always a good sleeper, has been waking up in the morning earlier and earlier for the past two months. He now consistently wakes up between 5 and 5:30am, and sometimes before. This is hard on his poor parents. Ideas? [more inside]
Good friends of mine are about to have their first child, a girl. What present can I get for the little one that will be both sentimental and personal, and which she can keep for her whole life? I'm currently thinking along the lines of a really nice children's book, ideally one with an Anglo-Japanese theme because dad is Japanese and mum is British - it would be nice to give something which will represent both of her inherited cultures. Any suggestions for presents with an Anglo-Japanese theme very welcome. My budget is about £30 / $50 and I'm in the UK. Thanks!

So I'm dating this single mom with a 6 month old. It's been going well but all our dates end with her rushing to take care of her baby - as a mom should. But she clearly needs a rest and I'm trying to figure out if I can take her on a vacation anywhere. Is there somewhere in the Northern California/Nevada area that is some kind of resort with stuff to do AND offers babysitting for a six month old as part of the package? Is there a name for resorts or vacations or recreation options like this? As a single guy with no kids I have no idea what the options are here. So please...educate me.
Our orphaned kitten hasn't peed yet, how worried should we be? [more inside]
My 6 month old baby has become increasingly difficult to put to sleep, and I feel like a failure every night. He was easy to put to sleep as long as he was swaddled, but now he fights going to sleep at most naps and especially at night. I feel like we need to do some kind of sleep training, but he's got horrible reflux and "crying it out" only results in him flipping onto his stomach, getting upset, not being able to turn back over, and then puking all over the crib. What should we do? [more inside]
How did you decide when to 'start trying' (for babies)? What made you say February = birth control, March = none ? How did you make the leap from the abstract "let's start trying next year" to "next time we have sex, we're 'trying'"? I always kind of thought I'd have a happy accident, but it's clear we going to have to *try* for this baby... but when? [more inside]
We're using all the advice from the Happiest Baby on the Block to get Little Stardust to fall asleep. It works the majority of the time and I can successfully get him to fall asleep by swaddling, rocking, white noise, etcetera. The problem is that he'll only stay asleep as long as I'm holding him.
