Always be prepared?

Currently 10 weeks pregnant with our first. We are trying to brainstorm everything we can possibly do ahead of time to make maternity leave and the first weeks/months home with a newborn go as smoothly as possible. Some examples: buy a chest freezer and fill it with meals that can just be popped in the microwave or oven. Save up for doggie day care passes to get our dogs out of the house and tired out in the beginning. Veteran parents, please enlighten us as to anything and everything else we can be doing to help us get through the acclimation period! [more inside]

Can you sell a baby in the US?

Researching for a story filter: Is there one federal US law that forbids selling babies/children? If so, can you point me to the law itself? Bonus points for information about which year this passed and what opposition the legislation faced. My story would concern a baby born in the 1950s, most likely. [more inside]

Where should we go for a baby hiatus?

My wife and I have been working together in a pretty intense, all consuming job for the last 5 years. We LOVE our chosen career, but it's totally incompatible with having children. Within the next year we hope she will become pregnant, and when that happens we will leave our job (which also provides our housing). We are thinking of taking advantage of the situation and taking a cheap 6-month hiatus to "get to know" our baby, to come to grips with our new reality, to decompress, and to contemplate reinventing ourselves. How can I help my friend come out to play with baby around?

I've only seen my best friend outside of his house twice this year. They've all but stopped communicating with me. Help me understand why this is so hard for them, and if there is there any advice I can use or pass on that can help? [more inside]

Old friend had a baby... maybe.

I recently did a Google search for an old college friend of mine that I haven't seen since his wedding a couple of years ago. I found a link to a baby registry with his and his wife's name on it, and the due date was listed as a week ago. I really want to call him up and congratulate him, but there's something a little weird about it: The registry has a ton of stuff on it, but almost nothing has been purchased: Just a few stuffed animals. This makes me worry that maybe they lost the baby and they just never took down the registry. [more inside]

Baby Sucked Down the Snot Sucker

Your child ate what? I'm fairly certain that Baby Tafetta swallowed herself one of the filters from the Nosefrida Snot Sucker this evening. Help me pick my baby doctor!

I'm currently 31 weeks pregnant, and this afternoon I'm heading into a "meet and greet" with a new pediatrician at a practice affiliated with the big multi-specialty doctor group in my town. At this point, we're thinking it's pretty likely that we'll either go with the pediatrics group or with the family practice group where my PCP practices, and I had set up this meet and greet to help try to make that decision. However, it's now 5 hours until we head over and I have no clue what to ask this doctor to help us make a decision. Honey, we need a family car

Hi all. Mrs Professorpotato will be giving birth to our first child in late November. We need to upgrade from a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic to something suitable for a baby + all its stuff (seat, pram, accessories), a small dog, and two loving parents. We're looking at a 2013 Jetta in the 17K range as we don't drive much but need reliable transportation. The Sonic has about a 12-14K trade in value and about 22K owing (debt consolidation + depreciation). We can comfortably afford payments of $400-500 per month. Anyone been in a similar situation? Tips? Thanks. PP.

What to do in Austin when you're breastfeeding?

There's a conference I'd like to go to in Austin at the beginning of November, but Minipenny is still breast feeding which complicates things. Misterpenny and I talked about making it a short family trip. A couple of days (well, day and a half) on our own and then a day and a half (and at least one evening) of him being on full childcare duties and me at the conference. I used to have the conference travel down, and enjoyed getting to see a bit of a new city, but it's a whole new ballgame now...we've never traveled with the baby, and have never been to Austin, so I'm having trouble knowing how to go about the planning, or if this is even a good idea. Nanny behaviour

Our 20 week old daughter (who was 7 weeks premature) was screaming as loud as she can, I had never heard her scream as loud.I found our nanny pouring water over her in the baby bath, she was shivering uncontrollably and her teeth were chattering. I insisted the nanny take her out and warm her up immediately. The nanny insisted that it was a 'normal' bath. I checked the water and it was barely warm. The nanny insists that she knows best and that I shouldn't interfere. I don't think it is acceptable for a small baby to take 15-20 minutes to stop shivering after a bath. What should we do about this?
