Mrs. Awesome is having a baby very soon! Yay! At this point it's likely to be a C-section - not our first choice, but we'll roll with it if we have to. I understand the recovery can be a bit rough; I'll be around for a month or so after the birth, but will we need more help than just me? [more inside]
We've been concentrating so much on the actual physical labor part of the birth that we are now (3 weeks out!) realizing that we want to give some consideration to the emotional part, and come up with ideas to make our families feel loved and included. [more inside]
I'm looking for ideas for things to do with my in-laws and my six week old baby that require basically zero walking. [more inside]
Would you take your 4 month old baby on an overseas flight? We want to fly to Europe next the fall, probably an 8 hour flight from where we are. We're also having our first baby in the spring. We feel like it would be an adventure (!) that could maybe be a bad idea. Has anyone flown overseas and had it gone very well or very terribly? Anything we should know? We are trying to imagine our lives post-baby and we very much want travel to be a part of it, but is 4 months too young? [more inside]
11 month old "Grabby" touches 3,5 year old "Argh"'s toys, Argh reacts by pushing or dragging Grabby away. Inevitably, Grabby ends up hurt. Mom yells, banishes Argh to room. Everyone feels bad. Cycle repeats. Oviously, Mom is Doing It Wrong. What now? [more inside]
My very best bestie in the whole wide world just had a baby girl. Hooray! The first week of her little life was Very, Very Scary, but the stubborn little nugget fought her way through and is now home and safe and ready to get on with Life and Growing and Becoming a Someone. I've already made a donation in her name to the amazing children's hospital that saved her life, but I'd like to send a physical gift for the little monkey, too. What should I get? [more inside]
We're looking for some proven, effective relief for our 4-month-old's gums as her teeth come in. It seems like it's impossible to find something that is both medically legitimate and doesn't contain benzocaine. We're open to herbal remedies if they're supported by more than anecdote, but we are not interested in homeopathy for our child. Any recommendations? [more inside]
We're having a baby next week and need help picking between two names. Looking for advice and experience relating to full names vs. nicknames . [more inside]
This Christmastime, as a side excursion from another trip, my family is going to Bangkok and Hua Hin, for a few days each. "Family" here includes my infant son, who will be about seven months old, as well as my wife and in-laws. Huzzah! I now have two related questions. [more inside]
We are about a 10 days away from having our baby girl And I can't help but think the right name will just come to us in some sort of magical, "that's her name!" sort of way. I think I may have exhausted every name search site and we just can't agree....plus now I hate all our top choices [more inside]
I've struggled on and off with postpartum depression since Toddler Maarika was born, but things seem a bit more dire now that I'm on month 21 of sleep deprivation. Last week I had two blissful nights of 7 straight hours of sleep and felt amazing, but now we're back to the standard multiple wake ups per night. Is it worth trying medication for depression when the root cause is likely chronic sleep deprivation? [more inside]
Most of our friends have kids under age five. We're considering whether and how to make our wedding a kid-friendly event. Have you seen this done? Have you tried it? As a parent, what would help? Or do you just want a night out? Would anything make you more likely to stay overnight for more fun the next day? [more inside]
I want to be able to nap at any point during the day, but I can't make myself go to sleep. Any tricks for napping at will? Difficulty level: I've got a newborn. [more inside]
Where's the best place online to buy quality baby Halloween costumes? [more inside]
My wonderful almost-seven-month-old is very, very active. All the "things to do with your baby" websites/books assume the baby will just sit there quietly. What did/do you do with your little livewire to keep them amused? [more inside]
My family just moved to Tippecanoe County in Indiana, and we're baffled by the seemingly arbitrary rules that dictate when babies are and are not allowed in bars and restaurants. [more inside]
I am a new mom to a six week old baby. My husband and I are part of a close group of friends we haven't seen in a while. They're eager to meet this baby and we'd like to let that happen next weekend. However, please help me firmly yet politely tell them they can't touch her until she's a little bigger. [more inside]
12.5-month-old Supercoolbaby was a very good sleeper from early on (she slept through the night at 2 months and carried on with that until about 10 months, but never more than 2 wakeups during the night), but recently some problems have developed. Would love your thoughts/advice. Many details within. [more inside]
Dear NYC-ers, I need to have a new baby gift delivered to someone. [more inside]
We are looking into baby names, and really like the nickname Molly. I thought Molly was a nickname for Margaret, but apparently it has traditionally been a nickname for Mary. Would it be weird to name our baby Margaret, but call her Molly? Should we just name her Molly?
Hey There Brilliant People! Could you please send me any film, tv or play suggestions that are about women going through pregnancy, the affect that has on their marriage, and women who work with doulas and midwives while pregnant? Thanks so much!
Help me keep the 10 month old safe in the tub with her big brother. I went to buy a bath ring and... apparently those are now verboten. So what do people do? [more inside]

One year old, first long flight, looking for recommendations for headphones so baby can comfortably watch his favorites (Sesame Street, Super Why, and Adele music videos) if necessary to keep things sane. [more inside]
I need a very specific bag and I don't know where to look for it. I need a large bag that can be carried like a backpack, larger than 25L. I would like it to be in some way elegant (that's an open definition...), semi-fashionable for the PNW set, and water resistant enough to walk for 15 minutes in the rain and not be damp for days (so, probably not leather). My sister-in-law, who has been trying to find this poem for years, first heard it from her grandmother. It's at least 50 years old and rhymes.
I know the lullabies my mother sang to me, but I'd like to learn some more lullabies or lullaby-like songs (we can go broad, but I think "soft, sweet and slow" are our watchwords) that I can sing to our child. [more inside]
My friend just had a baby, I wanted to send her a small-something to let her know that I'm thinking of her and her newborn. What would be good for this? [more inside]
Can anyone recommend a part-time mother's helper that can get to North Cambridge? We want extra support for a week in taking care of this guy. The mom will be at home, and we want to reduce the chances that she gets overwhelmed, starting this Wednesday, after his grandma goes home, and I go back to work.
For the food challenged: How do I learn to plan for and cook deadly simple nutritious meals for 1 adult + 1 baby child? Recipes, advice, pointers all welcome. [more inside]

So....after months of prenatally following our daughter's heart issues and a year of post-birth cardiology visits it was determined that she did in fact need to have surgery to correct her issues and we are trying to keep it together while we wait for her surgery date and wondering what we can expect the day of and days following the surgery to be like and we can/should be doing for her and/or ourselves. I have a great four month old daughter. Due to a weird timing situation, both my husband and I have been home with her for the last four months, sharing duties. Also due to weird timing, we are moving around a lot. Our kid has no routine right now, and I'm started to think my mom is right that we're spoiling her. Help? [more inside]
My baby is about to turn 7 months old. Due to various factors, he does not get a huge amount of exposure to people that aren't me and his dad. Compared with pretty much all of the other babies we've encountered, he is very reserved when out in public and meeting other people (eg. does not smile, makes very little "happy" or "contented" noise, etc.). I'm a little worried that I'm not socialising him properly. Reality check needed. [more inside]
A couple of weeks ago, my newborn son and I received a blessing from a Buddhist monk, in hospital here in the UK. He recited some words to each of us in a foreign language, and then tied yellow threads on our wrists. I would love to know what the words meant, and the significance of the thread, if anyone knows? Thanks!
My partner and I just found out last night that we have been chosen as adoptive parents to a baby... who is due in September! So, suddenly lots to do and lots to learn. Where do we even start?! Instruction manuals, blogs, scholarly articles, To Do Lists, To Don't Do Lists... What are the resources you found indispensable? Which did you find later that you wished you'd had earlier? Which are a waste of my time? We have wonderful family and friends who I know will help us figure all of this out, but I need to start building up my own arsenal of resources.
My baby girl's birthday is this week and I am hunting the perfect song to back a slideshow of photos of her first year. I do not want anything overtly sappy. My kiddo is known for being adventurous and fun so I want to find her a song that is suiting to her personality. Help please! :) [more inside]
My nephew is a musical genius- perfect pitch, memorized discography of most prominent classical composers, and he plays clarinet and piano (also almost any instrument he picks up.) He has autism and has been preoccupied with the Baby Einstein (and language and Beethoven) series since he was very, very young (a baby). I think one of the reasons he still holds onto it and will watch it over and over is because it's visually and musically interesting with out having a plot that his attention cannot hold onto or is too difficult to grasp emotionally. Anyone have recommendations for music/band films that would be appropriate for a 12 year old that is visually interesting with out a plot? He has watched almost every Disney and classic musical out there, but I wonder if there is something like the BE series, but more mature. Thanks!
I just got funding to travel to St. Louis to do an oral history project. Yay! Where should I stay and how should I travel? And what should my husband/infant do during the day? [more inside]
A year ago, my father got an extremely rare form of cancer and died. Now my wife's pregnant, and we’re very excited. The experience has left us concerned about things my wife and I never would've given ten minute of thought to before my father got sick; we’re worried about chemicals and the kid. [more inside]
We're thinking of starting some sort of sleep training for our four month old. I know, she's young, but the "magical thinking" we have in getting her to sleep (hours of nursing, rocking, squats, singing, nursing) as well as the hourly (or even half-hourly) wake ups are not good for us, and they're not good for her. She really needs to sleep, and I can tell she really wants to. The question is, how? [more inside]
Due to an incredible amount of life changes (including marraige, move, new job and death of a parent) I have barely been able to do all the things you are supposed to do when you are pregnant with your first child. Due date is a little over am month away. On top of that I have gained too much weight and feel very uncomfortable, especially at work. My questions range from how do I make the next six weaks bearable (especially at my desk job) given I've outgrown my maternity clothes and feel really uncomfortable physically, to what are the top three things I must learn and/or have before baby arrives? Our baby's car seat, a Graco Click Connect 30, will not unlock from its base. I know it's a long shot that anyone else might have experience with this, but any suggestions? Preferably ones that don't destroy the seat, base, or seatbelt, but if necessary... [more inside]
I need to decide by tomorrow whether to move out of my apartment (in September). Dislike the landlord, who lives above me, but the place is nice and my daughter was born there. My old landlord, who I like a lot, has a place for rent. Details below: [more inside]
Due to a confluence of family occasions and holidays this summer, we'll be taking our baby on several trips over the next couple of months. We don't have our own car, and will be travelling via train some of the time, so would like to keep the amount of baby paraphernalia to a minimum. What's your best advice for travelling with a 4-5 month old? [more inside]
