If my wife hosts a baby shower, fairly large (30+ people) for her friend (with all the expense, labour and effort that requires) would she still be expected to give a present to her friend on top of this?

What is it like to give birth? I'm male, and one of the side affects is that I'll never get pregnant. I'm wondering what it's actually like to give birth to a whole new person.

My wife is hosting a baby shower for a mother-to-be that wants 50 people to be invited (she's even providing the list). But I have heard that here in Toronto, you need to have a permit for private gatherings of more than 25 where alcohol will be served. We can't find any detailed information on this though.
Anyone know where to look, or know the answer?

I'm in the very early stages of planning a family vacation to Colorado. We have an energetic one-year-old. We haven't been to Colorado before, so I am looking for ideas/suggestions on where to stay, what to do, and general suggestions on trying to have a somewhat relaxing vacation with a little one.

My wife and I will have our first kid in June. Our cat is a sweet, lovable, completely insane little pain-in-the-butt. He loves snuggling up to both of us, especially when my wife naps, but he's not allowed to sleep with us. But now we have to think about Baby Kickstart.

babyfilter: Help me find a high quality baby monitor. I live in a Manhattan apartment building which has proven to be a very challenging environment for wireless reception. We have plaster-over-lath wall construction which blocks many signals. The apartment is long (over 150' from the master bedroom to the baby's bedroom). There is plenty of RF interference from nearby apartments and the city environment.

I'm pregnant. Joy! My husband and I live in a small apartment and have brainstormed many ways to make more space for the required baby paraphernalia, and the play space the baby will eventually require. But I wonder, is there a polite way to ask well-meaning friends and family to please not give us a lot of big, plastic clutter which will quickly eat up this hard-found space?
