Don't want to be a human security blanket

Okay, I'm pretty much at wit's end. My six month old son (second child) has always been a very easygoing and happy baby, but for the last month or so, he's been extraordinarily needy. Normally, this is something I'd attribute to teething, but Tylenol/Orajel does not seem to help, and the pediatrician checked him two days ago and said he doesn't see or feel anything near the surface yet. Help me avoid a babysitting blunder

I am babysitting tomorrow for an 18 month old, and while I love kids, and have had plenty of experience caring for them, it's been a couple years since I took care of a baby. I am looking for babysitting advice so glaringly obvious, I would not be able to find it by googling (I tried). [more inside]

Drunk Dad at hookup = no kid or damaged kid?

Does a father's moderate drinking, around insemination, affect conception rates or baby health? I've googled aplenty, but the info that I've found is consistently of poor quality, with lots of assertions and opinions but no data regarding actual outcomes, either for conception rates or a baby's development. I'm not interested in stories about damaged sperm, but rather solid evidence about babies, either the lack of babies or damage to their health. And I'm talking about consumption levels comfortably within the moderate range, so alcholic malnutrition and whatnot don't factor in. Thanks!

Hack My Baby

Give me your baby hacks! My wife and I are expecting our first child in November. What tips and tricks can you offer us to make our lives a lot easier? For example, a friend of mine swears that putting a crying baby in front of a mirror will cause it to stop. Another uses noise cancelling headphones to temper the noise from his shrieking child. I am looking for hacks on everything from diaper changing to stroller modifications. Make our lives easier as we enter into parenthood.

Herniated disc + pregnancy = ?

Back trouble and pregnancy: Which is worse for a person with a herniated disc, a C-section (which I imagine will compromise the all-important core muscles) or vaginal delivery (which might cause the disk to rupture)? Looking for ways to cool down a hot baby's room.

It's getting warm out, and the top floor of the house we live in is heating up a lot. My infant son sleeps upstairs and the heat from the day is moving up to the top floor and lingering for hours and hours. The catch is he sleeps best in complete darkness, so opening windows means screwing up his sleep for the night. Anyone have any suggestions on how to cool down the top floor while creating a minimal disturbance for my kid? [more inside]

How Do I Ethically Dispose of Unneeded Infant Bottles?

Now that my son has accepted that his "Ba" (bottle) is truly a thing of the past, what should I do with his bottles? Part of me wants to donate them (I even have unused nipples in packages) to a local shelter / food bank, but of course we all now know that clear polycarbonate bottles probably leach bisphenol-A into the milk. (saccade, I should have listened to you!!) I'm very conflicted about this. Can you help me make the most ethical choice? [more inside]

New parent - Baby not sleeping at night question

We have a beautiful two week old baby girl. She is very well tempered except at night when we try to go to bed. We have been trying to get her into a routine (bath, story, feeding, bed) but she outright refuses to go to sleep in her crib or in the co-sleeper. The only place she will sleep any amount of time so we can sleep is in between us in bed. This has been really stressful for me an my wife because we are terrified of rolling over onto her or that she will suffocate on the pillows or blankets. During the day she sleeps in the playpen without any issues too. Does anyone have any advise as to how we can get our little angel into her crib and out of our bed? When we do put her down, she wakes up two minutes after you put her down and screams until you come get her. Or is this something that we just need to wait out because she is a new born?

Whoops, I forgot to have kids

I am turning 40 this month and the only thing that I have been certain of all my life is my desire to have a child. For a bunch of reasons, mainly poor planning, I have no way to make this dream happen any time soon (financial reasons, no partner, etc.). I'd like to look into freezing my eggs so that a couple of years from now I might still be able to make my dreams come true. Does anyone have experience with this? What is the cost? Is it a complicated procedure? Whatever information you might share would be very much appreciated!
