Baby is Flipping Out

My 5 month old baby has learnt to flip from back to front, and does so very often while he's sleeping. Unfortunately, he's not figured out how to flip from front to back yet, and that means he will suddenly start screaming away during sleeptime. This is messing up his sleep schedule, and making him wake up a lot more often that he should. Any ideas what we should do, if anything? And how does this affect any sleep training that we're planning on doing? [more inside]

Baby countdown - how should I spend my last weeks before I'm a mom?

I'm on maternity leave now, at 32 weeks, since my job is very physical. I'm still feeling really good, though sometimes a little tired. What kinds of things should I be doing with my day to make the most of this time? What do you wish you had done before becoming a parent? Looking for all kinds of suggestions, from health-related to frivolous splurges.

Babby Middle Name Filter

Hey Green, need some help with naming my newborn. We came up with first name some time ago, but not middle name. And since she has now been born this became a more pressing issue. First name - Zoe, last name - long, russian/jewish, something like, but not, Shostakovich. Trying to find something that flows/sounds good. Bonus points - starts with a V or an F. Potentially OK with more obscure names.

More songs for baby video, like M. Ward's "One Hundred Million Years"

I'm looking for more songs similar to M. Ward's "One Hundred Million Years" for a 20-minute baby photo/video compilation. I have found plenty of kids' songs and songs written about having children. I'm looking for more indie songs that echo the sentiment, "And this love, this love between you and I, Is older than that burning ball of fire up in the sky." Songs by indie singers about endless love, happiness, joy, the beauty of life, etc. would fit the bill. [more inside]

How can I secure a glass table top in a house with a toddler?

I have a dining room/kitchen glass table, with a round tabletop that sits on top of a metal base without any attachment point. It's sort of similar to this item. My daughter is 1 year old and just starting to become mobile. I'm concerned she might push or pull on the tabletop and cause it to fall, injuring her. I've been stumped on how to find a way to secure it. The best I've found are some round discs to attach somewhere, but I'm suspicious that they will really work. Has anyone successfully babyproofed such a table?

Audiobooks for a preemie in the NICU?

I have a dear friend whose son has been in the NICU since June 25th. He's responded incredibly well to classical music, Aphex Twin and loves other types of "light" stimulation, especially anything with repetitive patterns/sounds (he cries when bath time ends, for example, and loves watching a little light/music toy that we hold outside his crib). They're exhausted from coming up with ideas for things to play/do with him within his very limited environment, and he is immune-compromised so most "typical" baby toys are out. Downloadable via Audible.com a plus! [more inside]

Should I be exposing my baby to more people?

My baby is about to turn 7 months old. Due to various factors, he does not get a huge amount of exposure to people that aren't me and his dad. Compared with pretty much all of the other babies we've encountered, he is very reserved when out in public and meeting other people (eg. does not smile, makes very little "happy" or "contented" noise, etc.). Nanny behaviour

Our 20 week old daughter (who was 7 weeks premature) was screaming as loud as she can, I had never heard her scream as loud.I found our nanny pouring water over her in the baby bath, she was shivering uncontrollably and her teeth were chattering. I insisted the nanny take her out and warm her up immediately. The nanny insisted that it was a 'normal' bath. I checked the water and it was barely warm. The nanny insists that she knows best and that I shouldn't interfere. I don't think it is acceptable for a small baby to take 15-20 minutes to stop shivering after a bath. What should we do about this?

Baby carrier advice

I have a clingy little infant and have been using a ring sling with mediocre results. The problem is that it seems my infant's too floppy in the ring sling and I'm lusting after an Ergo. Is this a worthwhile investment or do I just need to figure out how to use the ring sling better/position my baby better? I'd like to be able to carry my baby while having complete use of my hands and--this is especially important--being able to bend over for cleaning, laundry, errands, etc. without having to use my hands or worry about slippage. And if your answer to the above is that I should get a non-ring sling carrier, is Ergo what you would recommend?

Need help with English names for a half Japanese baby girl.

We are trying to think of names for our impending baby girl. I am American and my husband is Japanese. We plan to give her an English first name, Japanese middle and last name. We have settled on a middle name, Miyuki (美幸). So her name thus far is _______ Miyuki xxxxshi. Criteria for English name: [1] must be easily writable in katakana (For example, Wi- isn't great, or Gl-, or x. All of these sounds can be written, but they come out complicated.) [2] must not sound silly in Japanese (this is subjective and related to [1].) [3] must not end in a long e sound, since middle and last names already do. [4] Prefer a classical name (i.e. something my Grandma would recognize as a name) but no need for it to be especially popular right now. We'll probably avoid the top five or ten most popular names. We are NOT looking for names that do double duty (which is what most of the threads I've found are about). So, not Naomi (always the first name that gets trotted out in these situations). We want a name from each culture that the grandparents on the opposite side can pronounce and that the kid can write when she gets to kindergarten. I'd especially appreciate input from fluent Japanese speakers here, and/or members of mixed families. Thanks!
