I have a dining room/kitchen glass table, with a round tabletop that sits on top of a metal base without any attachment point. It's sort of similar to this item. My daughter is 1 year old and just starting to become mobile. I'm concerned she might push or pull on the tabletop and cause it to fall, injuring her. I've been stumped on how to find a way to secure it. The best I've found are some round discs to attach somewhere, but I'm suspicious that they will really work. Has anyone successfully babyproofed such a table?
I have a dear friend whose son has been in the NICU since June 25th. He's responded incredibly well to classical music, Aphex Twin and loves other types of "light" stimulation, especially anything with repetitive patterns/sounds (he cries when bath time ends, for example, and loves watching a little light/music toy that we hold outside his crib). They're exhausted from coming up with ideas for things to play/do with him within his very limited environment, and he is immune-compromised so most "typical" baby toys are out. Downloadable via Audible.com a plus! [more inside]
Blended baby meat - from the store or blended myself - tastes bitter and unpleasant. What are some good ways to make it taste better without using a sugar-heavy sauce?
11 month old "Grabby" touches 3,5 year old "Argh"'s toys, Argh reacts by pushing or dragging Grabby away. Inevitably, Grabby ends up hurt. Mom yells, banishes Argh to room. Everyone feels bad. Cycle repeats. Oviously, Mom is Doing It Wrong. What now? [more inside]
My very best bestie in the whole wide world just had a baby girl. Hooray! The first week of her little life was Very, Very Scary, but the stubborn little nugget fought her way through and is now home and safe and ready to get on with Life and Growing and Becoming a Someone. I've already made a donation in her name to the amazing children's hospital that saved her life, but I'd like to send a physical gift for the little monkey, too. What should I get? [more inside]
My family just moved to Tippecanoe County in Indiana, and we're baffled by the seemingly arbitrary rules that dictate when babies are and are not allowed in bars and restaurants. [more inside]
Dear NYC-ers, I need to have a new baby gift delivered to someone. [more inside]
We are looking into baby names, and really like the nickname Molly. I thought Molly was a nickname for Margaret, but apparently it has traditionally been a nickname for Mary. Would it be weird to name our baby Margaret, but call her Molly? Should we just name her Molly?
Help me keep the 10 month old safe in the tub with her big brother. I went to buy a bath ring and... apparently those are now verboten. So what do people do? [more inside]
One year old, first long flight, looking for recommendations for headphones so baby can comfortably watch his favorites (Sesame Street, Super Why, and Adele music videos) if necessary to keep things sane. [more inside]
My sister-in-law, who has been trying to find this poem for years, first heard it from her grandmother. It's at least 50 years old and rhymes.
My baby is about to turn 7 months old. Due to various factors, he does not get a huge amount of exposure to people that aren't me and his dad. Compared with pretty much all of the other babies we've encountered, he is very reserved when out in public and meeting other people (eg. does not smile, makes very little "happy" or "contented" noise, etc.). I'm a little worried that I'm not socialising him properly. Reality check needed. [more inside]
Our baby's car seat, a Graco Click Connect 30, will not unlock from its base. I know it's a long shot that anyone else might have experience with this, but any suggestions? Preferably ones that don't destroy the seat, base, or seatbelt, but if necessary... [more inside]
I need to decide by tomorrow whether to move out of my apartment (in September). Dislike the landlord, who lives above me, but the place is nice and my daughter was born there. My old landlord, who I like a lot, has a place for rent. Details below: [more inside]
My daughter has suddenly started having "blow outs" nearly daily - help me fit her diapers better. [more inside]
We traveled a couple of weeks ago, and my 7 month old got a respiratory virus and got very sick. Sent from pediatrician's office to ER to PICU sick. Based on timing, Occam's Razor says she caught it on the plane. We will be flying again in a few weeks. I would like practical tips for things we can do on the plane to minimize the risk of her getting sick again. [more inside]
My fiancee and I are getting married in August 2015, next year. We have had all the big talks about our future, including children. Previously, we were happy to wait until we were married to have children, but recently she has been changing her mind. What gives? [more inside]
Considering getting a bedside co-sleeper for my baby. Parents who've used these, were they worth the money in your experience? [more inside]
We have a new (4 month old) baby. Hooray! My husband and I both have wonderful parents who want to see their only granddaughter as much as they can. His parents live almost across the country so don't visit often. The problem is with my parents, and I need a reality check about what I'm asking of them- am I setting reasonable boundaries or being selfish? [more inside]
We're planning to take our son to visit his grandparents for 4-5 days. He will be 4 months old. It's a 6 hour drive away. He's never spent the night away from home and the longest he's ever been in the car is 1 hour. What steps can we take to maximize our chances of a fun (and not especially sleepless) visit? [more inside]
*Baby filter* Our 11ish month old has had two super weird bedtimes ("happy happy party time! Hey, did you know I can make farting noises with my mouth? woohoo!") this week and I'm trying to figure out what might be going on, and more importantly what our options are for dealing with it. All the gory details inside. [more inside]

I've only seen my best friend outside of his house twice this year. He and his wife have a 15-month-old baby boy, and they ignore, decline or don't make it to every social engagement because the baby might cry, or the baby is sleeping. They've all but stopped communicating with me. Help me understand why this is so hard for them, and if there is there any advice I can use or pass on that can help? [more inside]
In about three weeks I will be embarking on a trip from Australia to the middle of America (solo!) with a very active 14-month-old. In an effort to stave off the anxiety that this prospect raises in me, I'm overthinking the logistics. Would love some advice on a few things. [more inside]
This is a two part question: 1. Some very nice people threw several baby showers for me. In searching past AskMe questions on baby etiquette I was horrified to learn that I should have given them hostess gifts! Help me figure that out. 2. Our baby has been showered with a mountain of gifts, some of these gifts have been multiple gifts from the same person/people. Do I send a separate thank you note for each time an individual has given me a gift? [more inside]
I'm looking for resources (books, websites, etc.) to help me gain a balanced perspective on whether or not motherhood is right for me, given my anxieties and health issues. [more inside]
Friends of mine will be new parents! I want to get them a sweet-ass gift. They have a wish list but say they welcome any other gifts not on it if especially good. Veteran parents, what did you wish you had when your baby came along? [more inside]
So we have started giving our baby some formula feeds (after advice from medical professionals. We are well aware of the benefits of breast feeding, and still do it as much as possible). [more inside]
Our 20 week old daughter (who was 7 weeks premature) was screaming as loud as she can, I had never heard her scream as loud.I found our nanny pouring water over her in the baby bath, she was shivering uncontrollably and her teeth were chattering. I insisted the nanny take her out and warm her up immediately. The nanny insisted that it was a 'normal' bath. I checked the water and it was barely warm. The nanny insists that she knows best and that I shouldn't interfere. I don't think it is acceptable for a small baby to take 15-20 minutes to stop shivering after a bath. What should we do about this?
My 14 month old baby has crying thrashing wakeful periods during the night on a semi-regular basis (roughly speaking, perhaps once every fortnight). He wakes up crying and can’t be consoled – arches his body and pushes away from me while in my arms (but cries harder if put down in his cot). [more inside]
We have a foscam webcam with night vision and the works. We can access it via wifi on our phones and computers, but want a dedicated screen to use as a baby monitor. Portable and/or plug-in... what are our options? Thanks!
I have a clingy little infant and have been using a ring sling with mediocre results. The problem is that it seems my infant's too floppy in the ring sling and I'm lusting after an Ergo. Is this a worthwhile investment or do I just need to figure out how to use the ring sling better/position my baby better? I'd like to be able to carry my baby while having complete use of my hands and--this is especially important--being able to bend over for cleaning, laundry, errands, etc. without having to use my hands or worry about slippage. And if your answer to the above is that I should get a non-ring sling carrier, is Ergo what you would recommend?
We are trying to think of names for our impending baby girl. I am American and my husband is Japanese. We plan to give her an English first name, Japanese middle and last name. We have settled on a middle name, Miyuki (美幸). So her name thus far is _______ Miyuki xxxxshi. Criteria for English name: must be easily writable in katakana (For example, Wi- isn't great, or Gl-, or x. All of these sounds can be written, but they come out complicated.) must not sound silly in Japanese (this is subjective and related to .) must not end in a long e sound, since middle and last names already do. Prefer a classical name (i.e. something my Grandma would recognize as a name) but no need for it to be especially popular right now. We'll probably avoid the top five or ten most popular names. We are NOT looking for names that do double duty (which is what most of the threads I've found are about). So, not Naomi (always the first name that gets trotted out in these situations). We want a name from each culture that the grandparents on the opposite side can pronounce and that the kid can write when she gets to kindergarten. I'd especially appreciate input from fluent Japanese speakers here, and/or members of mixed families. Thanks!
I’m currently expecting my first child, who is due around Halloween. I have some minor and probably totally inconsequential—yet nagging—worries about her expected birthdate, and would love if those of you who are late fall babies OR a parent of a late fall baby would come in and assuage my concerns. My 9-month-old, always a good sleeper, has been waking up in the morning earlier and earlier for the past two months. He now consistently wakes up between 5 and 5:30am, and sometimes before. This is hard on his poor parents. Ideas? [more inside]
My "glamorous" job just got worse and I have a baby now. Good time to quit? [more inside]
How did you decide when to 'start trying' (for babies)? What made you say February = birth control, March = none ? How did you make the leap from the abstract "let's start trying next year" to "next time we have sex, we're 'trying'"? I always kind of thought I'd have a happy accident, but it's clear we going to have to *try* for this baby... but when? [more inside]
In the next two weeks, there will be a new addition to our household -- a baby. (Not mine.) And since it's not mine, I would prefer not to hear it. There are lots of AskMes about earplugs, but many (like the ETY ones) use as a selling point that they don't muffle speech. I want to muffle everything. Best ear protection for the job, <$30?
We just took in an 11 month old foster baby. People want to give us things but we have no idea what we really need. What do you (and your one year old) love to use and consider essential? [more inside]
I am going to a conference at an Inner Harbor hotel this week, and the whole family will be going. We are looking for places to get takeout, as well as places where a baby in a stroller would be welcome. [more inside]
My wife and I will be visiting New Orleans at the end of this month with our almost 1-year old son. Having the baby with us has required two contingencies: we are renting a car, and our days will have to end by 6:30 or 7 pm-ish (although they do start at 6:30-7am). We will also need to find a quiet place for him to nap during the day, or else sit in the car/return to our lodging for an hour or so. I am hoping he'll nap in the stroller as we wander the city, but can't take this for granted. Given this, and the fact that we only have two days (Friday-22 and Monday-25, the weekend is taken up by the wedding we are travelling for) how best to organize our time? Any advice on travelling with an infant? [more inside]

Easy prep and inexpensive ingredients are a priority. So please, help us with some suggestions for easy-ish, healthy-ish, cheap-ish meals that can help us avoid Papa Johns or Chinese takeout.
