My bestest good friend of 20 years is pregnant! YAY! I'd like to get her something simple but awesome to commemorate this. What should I send?

I'm building a baby registry. a) What was your absolute most-used, wouldn't-survive-without-it thing you had on your baby registry? b) And what were you absolutely certain you'd use all the time that just gathered dust?

My close friend is pregnant (yay!) and I'm a knitter, so I'd like to make her a whole mess 'o' baby stuff. But I also want it to be
useful. I don't know anyone else with a baby, so tell me, Internet, what knittable items/garments do new parents really end up using for their infants?

My friends just had their first baby. Hooray! I'd like to send a baby gift, but would like it to be thematically consistent with my shower gift. Naturally, there's a catch. I'll explain...

A dear friend just became a father (scant hours ago.) He and I go back a long way, and I'd love to do something nice for the new parents. My wife, a master knitter, is already at work on various soft and cuddly baby items, but having no similar handcrafting talents, I am looking for something purchasable that would be appreciated by a new father, mother, and male infant.

A friend just had a premature baby at 32 weeks (just below 4 lbs), and to complicate matters further, she was on vacation with family out of state and will likely be stuck there until the baby is healthy (if they were home, I could go right over and help make food, etc). I'm kind of feeling paralyzed wondering what an appropriate gift would be though. Small baby clothes? Send money/gift certificates to help offset travel bills? Flowers? I'm guessing it'll be a month or so before she comes home.
