How can I support my wife so she is able to care for our child while I'm at work?

Women, what are some things you did after birth that helped you to become more self-sufficient in taking care of your child (i.e. not needing to have the father around all the time)? What are some things the father did to support you in this process? [more inside]

Birth Control methods for hormone intolerant?

I am in need of birth control but extremely intolerant to hormonal methods. I need something more reliable than just condoms. I've been on pretty much every brand of pill and any hormonal methods seem to give me unmanageable depression and yeast infections that never ever go away. I do not ever want kids and would get sterilized only I can't afford it. I have heard about copper IUDs but I've heard a lot of things about women have stupidly heavy flows and awful unmanegable cramps with them. I'm concerned about a heavier flow because I"m prone to anemia. Does anyone have any advice? Any expirience with the copper IUD's, or has had similar hormonal issues but found a brand of pill that works well with no side effects?

What is an infant feeder?

What is an infant feeder? My wife's former boss (mid 60's I guess) said that when she had her kid she didn't wake up in the night to feed him, she just hooked an infant feeder up to his crib and put some formula and rice cereal in it and the baby would feed himself. It sounds like something a hamster drinks out of, but for babies. I have googled and not been able to find anything but this picture that I am not sure is what this lady was talking about. Do you know what this thing is and can you tell me about it?

Baby Gap has skinny jeans. For babies. Why.

My close friend is about to give birth to a baby girl. I'd love to do things for her (babysit, cook dinners, help with groceries) but since she lives across the country, a gift will have to suffice. She's already had a baby shower where she received swings, slings, pumps, bottles, blankets, tons and tons of pink baby clothing, etc, so I'd rather not get her any more of that stuff. Additionally, I'm her least traditional friend (read: happily unmarried, childless, liberal New Yorker) and I think she's looking forward to getting some sort of "alternative," gender neutral, really different baby gift from me. I'd like to deliver, but I have no ideas. I'd love some website/store/product recommendations. Where do new moms who hate Baby Gap and gender specific clothes and frilly baby things shop? Thank you!

I can remember lying down in the back of station wagons and pickup trucks, but what did we do in the VW?

How did kids under 2 travel in cars before car seats were the norm, particularly on long trips? My mom recalls tots in the lap and something called a 'car bed' (got any pictures?). Would little ones get lap-belted in to prevent them from falling off the seat on corner-turns?
