Three or four years ago I saw a photograph in an actual newspaper of a group of wetnurses and babies in an Italian orphanage. There were some rows of buxom young women in uniform, each one seated with a breast out feeding a baby. The young women all wore a kind of nurses cap and oddly, every single one of them had dark curly hair. There was an odd juxtaposition in the picture between the uniformity of the group - and they were pretty smart - and the intimacy of the action. The date must have been 1940's or 30's. Now I've tried googling this picture and while the searches have taken me to some unexpectedly alarming places, I've not found it. The closest I've got, in feeling and structure, is number 3 of 4 here; but this isn't it. So, consulting the diverse and extensive knowledges accumulated here, does anyone know the photograph and where I might see it again? [more inside]
We are looking into baby names, and really like the nickname Molly. I thought Molly was a nickname for Margaret, but apparently it has traditionally been a nickname for Mary. Would it be weird to name our baby Margaret, but call her Molly? Should we just name her Molly?
Well now I'm firmly in the camp of "anxious parent" but here goes. How much food should my kid be eating? He's 7 months old, is about 20 pounds, on formula and some solids. Details below. [more inside]
My baby is about to turn 7 months old. Due to various factors, he does not get a huge amount of exposure to people that aren't me and his dad. Compared with pretty much all of the other babies we've encountered, he is very reserved when out in public and meeting other people (eg. does not smile, makes very little "happy" or "contented" noise, etc.). I'm a little worried that I'm not socialising him properly. Reality check needed. [more inside]

How did you decide when to 'start trying' (for babies)? What made you say February = birth control, March = none ? How did you make the leap from the abstract "let's start trying next year" to "next time we have sex, we're 'trying'"? I always kind of thought I'd have a happy accident, but it's clear we going to have to *try* for this baby... but when? [more inside]
We are expecting (twins) and we are devouring parenting books. We're not overly beholden to these books - we trust our own instincts. But it seems like a lot of these books are anecdotal, or old-fashioned. We'd love to find a book that is modern, research/data-driven, and at least a little enjoyable to read. The kind of book that someone who enjoys Lifehacker, RadioLab, BoingBoing, etc. would respond to. Any suggestions?
Being without children myself and not that well versed on what they need/want or the big trends right now, i need suggestions for the following gifts i need to buy in the next month or so: gift for a premature baby boy (or his mum); gift for a 2yr old girl; gift for my soon to be arriving nephew [more inside]

We're Brits in Washington DC about to have our first baby! We have bicycles but don't own a car (use Zipcar / taxis). All the standard baby-prep advice seems to assume owning a car... so do you guys have any tips for car-free baby living? In particular: car seats (for occasional use / quick installation), diaper services and bike trailers? Details inside! [more inside]
I am 30, happily married, and in the middle of next year will be eligible for a year of paid maternity leave. Around the time I become eligible, I am also starting grad school (MLIS at U Wisconsin, Madison). I feel like I could probably manage any two things: work + school (part-time), work+baby, or baby+school.; but not all three. I am attending graduate school part time via distance education, and my work is supportive.. For those of you who've had kids in graduate school - to what extent do these two mix? What worked and what didn't? I feel like if I go to school part time (3 years or so) and then start trying for the kid, I'm pushing the age thing (I'd be about 34 - and I have mild endometriosis). If I have a year of paid maternity leave, could I use that time to attend school full time? Or just part time? This would be tricky in person, but I would have at least some additional flexibility due to it being distance education. My husband, for what it's worth, pulls his weight around the house (he's actually neater than I am) and is pretty domestic/clucky.

This is a long shot, but I'm trying to identify a painting that I saw at the Philadelphia Museum of Art about 4 years ago. All I remember is that it was a large painting that looked like a forest scene - at first glance it looked simply like a river within the forest, but upon looking at it again, you can see that the river is made up of hundreds upon hundreds of babies. I've tried googling, and exploring the Philadelphia Museum of Art's webpage, but to no avail. I am hoping someone knows this crazy painting!

I remember reading as a young kid - in about 1985/6 - a comic book starring the cast of the Justice League of America as babies or toddlers. I'm not sure of the specifics, like if it was actually the JLA, but it definitely had cute little baby versions of all the favourite DC staples: Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman and the Flash. Does anyone else remember this? Am I imagining the whole thing? What was it called and where can I find a copy? [more inside]
