how to ask someone if they're expecting to host you

My husband and I are going to see his cousin Karen and her family for a weekend. How do I ask non-awkwardly if Karen is expecting to host us in her house or if we should find our own Airbnb place? Somehow that never got clarified. [more inside]

I accidentally named myself after an acquaintance. Help?

I'm a recently-out trans woman. Early in my period of self-discovery I fell in love with the name "Heather," completely forgetting that I have an acquaintance with that name. She and I haven't talked in the past few months, but we live in the same apartment complex, so we run into each other every now and then. We're friends on facebook, so she's definitely seen my coming-out post by now. Is this even an issue? Do I bring it up, or just ignore it? If I say something, what should I say?

Poems for shy people in love

One of my favourite short love poems is Shailja Patel's 'First Dates in Utopia', which has a gentleness and loveliness to it that I associate with shy folks like myself. What are your favourite poems or lines of poetry about love that is awkward, hesitant and quiet - filled with silences and mis-timings? NOTE: I'm not looking for poems about unrequited love, but rather connections made or being made whilst shy. [more inside]

How do I talk to authority figures?

I have difficulty interacting comfortably with people I see as authority figures, like professors and senior figures in the legal profession. (My job requires me to do both pretty often - I'm a junior academic and my research involves talking to judges and lawyers). I sometimes get the sense I make them feel uncomfortable by being awkward/ overly deferential / stammering etc and, more often, even when an interaction seems to have gone smoothly, I'm deeply uncomfortable and anxious myself. What do I do to get over this? [more inside]

Is it weird/creepy to attempt friendship with a one off acquaintance?

Recently I had to take my car in for repairs. I visited the shop for an estimate, spoke on the phone to the receptionist and dealt with her when dropping off my car and picking up the courtesy car. Not only was she very helpful in providing me with some information I needed (a previous shop I went to weren't helpful at all) but she was fun to interact with. She and I seemed to hit it off and chatted each time for a few minutes, about the car and also about some other random topics. After interacting with her I just felt like I wished she was my friend. The converation was light and fun and I think we share a sense of humor. Just to provide some more information: I'm a female in my early 40s and I think she is maybe late 40s. [more inside]

I'm dating-challenged and dropped the ball. How I do pick it back up?

Over last weekend I spent a whole bunch of time with a lovely woman--dinners, picnics, walks, wine under the stars etc. These weren't explicitly dates, but it all seemed pretty romantic. At the end of the evening on Saturday and Sunday we had these awkward pauses when my insecurities and my desire to--give a goodnight kiss? Express my attraction? Or something--were warring. I don't know what she was thinking but it was awkward on both sides. Now I won't see her for a month. Do I email her and explicitly say that I'm interested? [more inside]

Nudging the S.O. toward the Pro-Social

My sweet, slightly socially awkward boyfriend is about to meet my parents. Is there any way I can gently, er, make this stop? [more inside]

Talking: How does it work?

I've been seeing my boyfriend for about three months, and just about everything is great. We see each other almost every day and sleep at each other's houses so often we practically live together. We have everything in common, and I've never met anyone I click with that much. One thing we have in common that's not so great, though: we're both shy, and sometimes we don't know what to say to each other! How can we overcome this? And, while we're on the subject, what are some good conversation starters? More info below. [more inside]

Why am I such a poor conversationalist, and how to improve?

Why do I repeat myself instead of explaining or describing what I mean in real-life conversation? When people have acknowledged my statement, why do I keep going with it at all, much less repeat almost the exact same phrasing? Why do I have so much trouble maintaining continuity in a topic?
