How to not make my coffee meeting with an important person awkward?

I'm meeting up a manager of a big organization that I want to learn more about tomorrow. I have never met him before and was introduced by a mutual friend. He offered to meet me one-on-one for coffee to chat. I didn't think much of it at first and I agreed to it. A couple of my friends have commented that it seems awkward to meet someone (opposite gender) for the first time at a coffee shop. It's too late to cancel but now I'm feeling awkward about it. Should I offer to pay for his coffee tomorrow since he offered his time? Thanks for the advice!

I avoid people. Is this normal?

Apart from some very special people, I avoid interaction as much as I can. I don't remember ever feeling like I enjoy interacting with people just for the sake of it unless I already have an established good relationship. You are not my therapist, but what is my deal? [more inside]

How can social skills be improved? Or can they?

I am currently 21 years of age (female). Growing up I didn't have too many friends and always felt intensely awkward and shy. I've grown past some of those feelings as I've gotten older and feel like I understand a lot more about how to have friendships and how to relate to people now, but I don't feel like I understand as much as I should. I really want to be more social and be better at relating with others so I keep putting myself in social situations but I'm not sure that I'm improving all that much. [more inside]

How do I get waitresses to stop pseudo-flirting with me?

I've had a string of weirdly unsettling interactions with Manhattan waitresses and I'm not sure how to stop them. I'll be more specific below, but basically a few of them will treat me like they're forcing themselves to flirt with me. I didn't put this name to it until I realized that it never happened when I was with one other woman, it only once happened when I was in mixed company, and if I was with other men the same waitress would give every man at the table the same treatment. I'd like to understand what's happening here, if anything, and how to make it stop. [more inside]

What do I do when okcupid intersects real life?

What makes a woman "creepy?"

There's plenty of literature out there about creepy men, "nice guys" and other types of that sort. Where are all the resources for this regarding *women?* Google is only giving me examples like she put [something gross] in my food or she made inappropriate references to getting pregnant. I'm looking for something more subtle. Bonus points if it's aimed toward socially-awkward nerdy types. [more inside]

Do I apologize, or do we all just pretend this NEVER HAPPENED?

I "met" an internet friend over the weekend who it turns out is someone I actually dated in high school. I am really embarrassed and hate that I've been an accidental jerk, and I'm not sure what to do now. You know, other than feel like kind of an idiot. [more inside]

New job prob

I just took a new job, which starts in two weeks. Upon accepting the job, I asked for a day off on June 7th, which is the day before my friend's wedding (in which I'm sort of a bridesmaid). I'd already gotten that day off with my current employer. This was fine with the new job. Now, I've realized that to make it to the bachelorette party, I will have to leave early on May 17th too... on my third day of work. How and when do I bring this up? Can I, even? [more inside]

Playdate conundrum

My Son (Oliver, 8) goes to school. He has regular playdates and the occasional sleepover with other kids from his class. One of the children from his class is the child of a local politician, his name is Thomas. Oliver and Thomas are friends, but Oliver is friends with many other kids and some of whom he would prefer. Sometimes Thomas can be a difficult kid, not exactly sure what his status is, but he has more needs than most kids. With that said, he is only 8 and not a bad kid, quite polite. We have had drinks with Thomas's parents before and it was nice, however I made sure to avoid any political conversations as the father is the elected local representative of a party I find ... unappealing. I know the mother more than the father and we get along fine. [more inside]
