Regarding the term: "white hat avatar." I'm embarrassed to ask, but what does this mean?

Help me ID this image. I've been using this image on my MySpace page and other sites (including my MeFi profile) for ages. I don't remember where I found it. All I remember is that sometime in early 2005, I googled "weird" or "bizarre" and then clicked images, and it was one of the first several results. I remember also that the page I found this image on had a number of similar ones, like a sequence of photos. Some think it looks like Dennis Hopper.

Anyway, I've grown accustomed to using it but I want to find out who created it and who it belongs to in case I want to start using it, or a modified version of it, for for-profit purposes.

Animated Character Question.

Who is this animated character I keep seeing? I keep seeing this animated character used as an avatar. It was also on a girl's shirt on MTV. I am just curious as to what it is, and it's difficult to find something on Google by just describing visual characteristics.

Can you help me find a good, conceited, self-important looking avatar? I'm hopelessly annoyed by Facebook and the self aggrandizing pictures people tend to use as their face to the world.
So, I'd love to find a picture - that clearly isn't of me - that sums up the spirit of desperately trying to make oneself look cool/sexy/whatever.
I may not end up using it - at the moment I'm just curious what good ideas for an avatar of this nature might be.
I'm a 30-something male.

Help me convince a co-worker, by pointing me to credible sources online (or offline, if necessary), that adding "web avatars" to web pages, such as those found at sitepal.com, are a HORRIBLE idea. I am primarily concerned with issues dealing with usability + accessibility problems and eye socket/ear drum bleeding caused by such things.

I have a friend who has gotten involved in Avatar, and I want to disengage her from it. She first got involved about 9 months ago; at the time, I knew nothing about Avatar but was instantly suspicious. The more I've learned, the less I like it. She's taken at least three of their courses—these courses are, naturally, very expensive, and she doesn't have a lot of money to throw around. She's actually put what had been her primary source of income on the back-burner and begun teaching these Avatar classes, if I understand correctly.

I don't have direct contact with the rest of her social circle, though I could probably find ways to reach them. Her friendship is important to me, so I don't want to just give up on her. I'm not sure how to broach this with her in a way that will express the gravity of my misgivings without alienating her, or (more importantly) pry her loose. I'm pretty sure she intuits my misgivings, so she'll tell me "I'll be out of town for an Avatar course," but will say very little more than that about it to me.

Interactive Avatar sources? Ideally I'm looking for a library of avatars -- different styles, characters, etc. -- that perform different actions. Similar to Subservientchicken.com sorta, but this is for educational purposes, to let kids control what the characters do. Can be VRML, a ton of animated clips, Flash, underlying tech. doesn't matter so much. Actions needed are commonplace things: jump, run, walk, kick, hit, throw, grab, lift, drink, eat, -- plus ideally more esoteric ones, like 'kitchen' activities: mixing, pouring, cooking, cutting, etc. Again, ideally actions common to a wide range of environments.

Whole body is important. Heads alone won't help much.

I know there's software that assists w/animating, but I'm wondering if there are libraries of short videos or animations depicting these kinds of things, or if anyone's created generic puppet-like avatars that can be manipulated by users.

Why must I have an avatar? My sbcglobal DSL mail service wants me to customize an avatar for my mail page. Currently a white and gray silhouette of a young black woman's head with trendy (?) worm dreads is always there. Plenty of lame options are offered but I want the graphic to just disapear from my mail page, but that option is not offered.
I understand that it isn't attatched to sent mail but still.

Who is this character, and where is his t-shirt?

A while back I spotted a t-shirt website that sold shirts with this little guy on it. Does anyone know the site, or the name of the character?
