Calling all cable experts

Tomorrow I'm hosting a presentation where the speaker would like to hook up a laptop to two decent-sized external speakers. All that's lacking is a cable. I'm hoping to run out to the electronics store tomorrow morning to buy a cable (or two?) to do this, but am completely baffled as to what to get. I plan to call the store in the morning, but simply because I am nervous about the presentation and would like to sleep peacefully tonight, can anyone here recommend exactly what kind of cables I should get? Can I just build my own shelves to solve this problem?

Good 3.5mm male to 3.5mm female audio cable extension?

I am looking for a 3.5mm to 3.5mm male to female audio cable extension where the male end would fit into an iPhone audio jack through a case. (So the male end should be roughly similar to the end of a pair of default iPhone headphones.) The female end would attach to, say, speakers or maybe a Square card reader. I would prefer if the male end is at a right angle to the rest of the cable. [more inside]

Learn me some IP/Networking for home a/v & automation?

I want to learn about IP and Network integration for home theater/home automation. Cedia looks like they have exactly what I'm looking for...but not until September. I'm reasonably computer-savvy and a fast learner, so my first choice would be a fast-paced crash course, starting right-the-heck now. In order of preference: Live in-person class(es), interactive learning website or software, book, non-interactive website. Also, location in the Northeast US is optimal but not required. Thanks!

Is A/V Installer a good "for now" job?

I'm going back to school in the Fall for a 2-year biomedical equipment tech degree which will hopefully lead to a decent long-term career. Yay! In the meantime (until the Fall and during the 2 years) though, I need to make some money. I've thought that maybe A/V or home theater installation might fit the bill as something I have some interest in and wouldn't be completely dead-end. Is it a good job? [more inside]

My Dark Twisted Media Fantasy

I have long held a fantastic dream of what I want my home theater setup to be. I've tried several times, in several different ways, to realize this dream - but there is always something. There's always something that doesn't work right - that makes my final implementation lacking in some fundamental way. I'm starting to give up hope. So - I'll tell you what I want and what I've tried - and I want you to tell me if there's another way. I can't be alone here. [more inside]

What is a good HD flash-memory camcorder with AV-input?

Does anyone know of or recommend a good flash-memory hi-def camcorder that has AV input? (ie it can also record regular/analogue video from another source, like a VCR does, though obviously it won't be in HD). Something like the Aiptek A-HD+ meets the flash/HD/AV-in criteria, but I'm hoping to find something with better optics/zoom/stabilization. [more inside]

Hapless painter wants to take a stab at video art. Cheaply.

Video camera rental advice: I'm looking to make an exceedingly simple, short video (an art project, if you will) and I'm looking to rent a fairly high quality camera to do it with. The condition is that I need a camera that can function reasonably (I'm not expecting miracles, here, but I don't want horribly washed-out, grainy business) in a very low-light situation. I'm applying for a small grant to do this, and I can't afford more than maybe $200 for a day's rental, $250 tops. [more inside]
