For my friend’s 40th she’s mentioned that she would like to celebrate by renting a house for an extended, 4-day weekend (between this October 18th and 25th) in a place that hits the following touch points: [more inside]

My wife and I had to move our road trip to the Telluride area back a couple of weeks to the first week of October. I'm worried that we will be greeted with bare aspen trees! I know that the timing of peak color can change from year to year, so I realize that any advice is just a best guess.
So, are we in luck?

I am convinced - or I've convinced myself - that there was an xkcd diagram that showed winter as unbearably cold and long, summer as unbearably hot and long, and a very short burst of spring and autumn where temperatures were just right. Does this actually exist, or is it some other cartoon, or have I imagined something as real?

There are summer and winter versions of big sports events such as the Olympics and the X Games. Are there spring and fall-based sporting events too? If not, why not? Are there any sports that are specially seasonal outside summer/winter?

I'm writing a little thing set in fall in California, and I'd like to get a sense of what the weather is like in the Alameda/Contra Costa area in October and November. I lived nearby - in Santa Cruz - for about a year, a long time ago, but my only memory is that it did eventually get cold - just not very. (Comparatively - I live in New England now, my cold scale now goes right on up to 11.) [more inside]

Autumn/fall is my favorite season and I love the feel and experience of the leaves changing color, the chill in the air, and traditional fall activities. The episode "Kiss and Tell" from Gilmore Girls, for example, centers around an autumn festival and has this sort of atmosphere. Could you give me some movies/documentaries/tv shows/episodes that also embody autumn?

I’m currently expecting my first child, who is due around Halloween. I have some minor and probably totally inconsequential—yet nagging—worries about her expected birthdate, and would love if those of you who are late fall babies OR a parent of a late fall baby would come in and assuage my concerns. I'm seeing some neat Fall vegetables at farmer's market: rutabaga, squashes of all type, huge Japanese daikon radishes, parsnips, sweet potatoes, lima beans. Let's hear your great (vegetarian) recipes for these weirdo vegetables.

My girlfriend and I miss the countryside of upstate New York where we went to school. Specifically, we long for the region's excellent, home-made, freshly pressed, piping hot, unpasteurized [!] apple cider. We're now in New York City looking for that wonderfully nostalgic autumn taste. Where should we go?
