This car is a '97 Toyota and it was was functioning well when parked. It had a flat tire and has been parked in my driveway for three weeks. When I went to change the flat today, I could not get the wheel off. To be clear, the lug nuts all came of relatively easily, but the rim seems to be melded/rusted onto the axle. What do I do? Crowbar? Chisel? Dynamite?

My hatchback car (Honda Fit) doesn't have a separately-locking trunk or glovebox. Can I add a lock-box or secret compartment somewhere inside the car for stashing a few items, for those times I must turn over my keys (parking garage, valet)? Ideally I'd only be securing/concealing 3 deck-of-cards-sized items: iPod, GPS, EZPass. There are no official Honda accessories that do this, nor can I find any Fit-fanatic mods that have addressed it.

My mother-in-law is in a contest with my wife that involves waking up early in the morning to go to the gym. Now that winter is finally starting to rear its ugly head, my mother-in-law is interested in getting a remote start setup for her car. She has a 2003 Subaru Forrester with automatic transmission, remote door locks on a key fob, and no alarm. She also has a few questions about the whole remote-start thing.

AutomobileFilter: I was looking at a few cars in the office parking lot and I couldn't help wondering -- why are Audis and Subarus designed with the engine so far forward? I've heard that both these brands of cars generally have the engine placed in front of the front wheels. Is there a technical reason for this, or does it come down to legacy engineering?

I just received a bill for taxes on a car I sold in 2001. The taxes are for 2001, 2002, 2003. I have the VIN - but I've moved about 8 times since then, and am not hopeful that I can find a copy of the bill of sale or transfer of title. How can I prove that I didn't own the car during that time?

I need to be in Sheffield, UK over Christmas (from evening Christmas Day until the day after Boxing Day). I don't have a drivers licence or a car. The only way I can think to accomplish this would be to learn to drive in the time between now and then, buy a cheap car on eBay (a Volvo?), get it insured and hit the highway.

I'm thinking about buying a new car in the next year. I live in Seattle, Washington, where the sales tax is about 8.8%, but I visit Oregon frequently, where there is no sales tax. Would there be any drawbacks to buying the car in Oregon to avoid the sales tax? I would still register and insure it in Washington.

Power Inverters for cars -
the thing you plug into your cigarette lighter, with a regular wall-plug on the other end. I bought one last night, for use with gadgets on a road trip. Thing is, they offer two types, excuse the B-st B-y links:
this one (95W), which I bought, and a stronger one (150W)
here - Question is, I went with the smaller cheaper one but I know nothing about power use for things. Should I return it for the larger, or is this sufficient power to charge a laptop, camera, PSP, ipod, etc? Mostly concerned with safety to equipment and car's electrical system. THANKS FOR YOUR ADVICE.
