2000 Toyota Solara convertible, treated very well, the one previous owner was my mom. And of course the actual day I got this car the automatic top stopped working -- but only one way, putting it back up. (The top can still be pulled up manually but it is very heavy and I am but one small person.) Automatic top still works great putting the top down. I'm looking for resources and my Google-fu is weak. My most indulgent purchase to date has been a Delonghi Magnifica superautomatic espresso maker. I push a button, it grinds beans, makes me an americano with beautiful crema, and chucks a little puck of used grounds into the receptacle. Magical! Sadly, it's on its last legs. [more inside]
my main coon cat Bear laughs at our anti cat devices and pounds on the door for breakfast. He started pounding at 5:00 a.m. this morning, 90 minutes before my alarm goes off, and kept it up long enough to ruin my sleep. It's time for a new strategy: automatic feeding devices. Please recommend the best device. [more inside]

It's fund drive time, and I have been a contributor and a host promoting fund drives for public and community radio. But a common complaint I hear from people is public radio encourages them to do their part, meaning contribute. The promise is the sooner you do, the sooner the drive will end. [more inside]
I have a 2yr old and lots of video I take almost daily: I love how the iOS apps Qwiki and FrameBlast automatically/randomly cut and assemble videos on my iPhone to make a video montage - sometimes it lands on a really nice selection and I feel wonderful sense of serendipity. With little or no effort, I have a great video to share with friends and family. What are some PC desktop equivalent software programs that will make a very busy guy's family video montage creation easier?
I need to scan a bunch of documents that are mostly simple black/white or grayscale text, lines, etc. I'm probably going to just buy a sheet-fed scanner, and I'd like recommendations for that. I'm hoping for a solution that will automatically generate PDFs with the included scanned images encoded as GIFs or PNGs or similar, since they will mostly be black/white or grayscale, which compresses much more cleanly with these formats. I have 200 scanned images of matchboxes. The matchboxes have different dimensions. I want to arrange the images automatically, with as few gaps as possible, into a large image to be printed as a poster. I think what I need is a "packing algorithm" but I don't know how to proceed. Is there a way I can do this automagically in Photoshop or with an existing freeware program? I don't need any special effects, just to simply arrange the images with the most efficient use of space.
My dad's computer was (mildly) compromised a few months ago - he visited "one of those sites" and ended up clicking "ok" to the dialog boxes and installing an unwanted (and very hard to get rid of) toolbar, which also changed his search engine and home page. This happened TWICE, just a few weeks apart. I've since installed a browser add-on that will prevent that particular type of mischief from happening again. But... [more inside]

I was playing around with a keyboard at a Guitar Center that had an auto-harmonize feature. Below a certain note pressing a key would play a chord instead of a single tone. What was interesting was that playing chromatically (white and black keys) it played chords that retained a firm sense of key (C major) - if you jumped around randomly or did chromatic runs it didn't sound like there were a bunch of modulations taking place. What formula do you think it used to do this?

I work in a small office with a small budget where the only full-time employees are my assistant and I, and we have separate offices. Our office has two phone lines. When one is busy, the other rings. Line one is our published office number. We each have our own voice mailbox. The problem is that you only get the "Press 1 to speak to [her], press 2 to speak to [me]" when both lines are busy or no one answers. I want to set up things so that people can select who they would like to speak to before the phone rings on our end. [more inside]
