Mashed yams and Tim Tams?

"American Thanksgiving" in Melbourne, Australia -- for a few Americans and a bunch of new Aussie friends who have never celebrated, but want to help with the cooking. How should I use the next few days to prepare? A few of the difficulties: I've never hosted Thanksgiving before, in ANY country. I'm not sure how to best coordinate the pot-luck aspect -- trying to shape a decent team-effort menu would be wise. I'm not even sure where the best place is to buy a turkey. Bonus points for menu suggestions that add Aussie flair to the American holiday (let's put kangaroo in SOMETHING), or that go over-the-top American (who says we can't have turkey AND bacon cheeseburgers?). Making friends in Melbourne

I'm an American guy in my mid-late twenties living in Melbourne, Australia for (at least) the next eight months. My social life was quite exciting when I first moved here during late summer, but lately it feels a bit stagnant at times. I'm looking for ideas of activities to get involved with, to make use of my free time and help me connect with new people (friends of both sexes, plus THE LADIES). [more inside]

Internet access for the Australian traveler...

I'm an American internet addict traveling around Australia for a year with my laptop. Wifi access at hostels is often a big ripoff. How to stay connected without breaking the bank? Specifics relevant to any city of a decent size would be appreciated, since I'll probably spend some time in each of them! [more inside]

Advice before I fly the coop for a year?

I (26/male) am leaving Los Angeles in January for at least one year of backpacking solo around Australia, NZ, SE Asia, and possibly some other places! Other than enjoying my remaining time before I leave (going to favorite restaurants, hanging with friends, etc.), what pre-trip activities should I be thinking about, and what preparations should I be making (especially while I have good insurance)? What do you wish someone had told you before you left for a trip of this length and scope? [more inside]

Making the best of few weeks down under?

AussieVacationFilter: I'm a young guy in Los Angeles seriously considering a solo trip to Australia. The Qantas Aussie AirPass seems like an amazing way to build a great trip without breaking the bank. However, with the level of freedom the AirPass would give me, I want to make sure I'm using my time and multiple cities wisely. Any advice and itinerary recommendations you'd be willing to make would be greatly appreciated! [more inside]
