What's the best/cheapest wireless Internet or mobile broadband plan in Sydney? I want to stop using my 3 Mobile Broadband, but I'm not sure what to replace it with. There's no phone line in my apartment, so that's not an option. I'll mostly be using it for downloading games and music.

Australia smart phone filter: I need to buy a new smart phone. I would like one that will allow me to occasionally connect my laptop to the internet. (Tethering?) Clearly I'm not that tech savvy so I don't want to jailbreak (?) etc. Is this possible with any smart phone on the market in Australia? [more inside]

I'm an American internet addict traveling around Australia for a year with my laptop. Wifi access at hostels is often a big ripoff. How to stay connected without breaking the bank? Specifics relevant to any city of a decent size would be appreciated, since I'll probably spend some time in each of them! [more inside]
