No, nothing to do with taxes. I am a night auditor now, and the job is seriously activating my analytical streak. I'm pretty good at figuring out how things interact in our system and why they do what they do, but there is a vale I cannot penetrate, though there be wonders beyond it: what the $#&*# is a System Suspense Account? Looking for MeFites with knowledge of the (FAR) federal acquisition regulations. After 18 years of invoicing the goverment for travel as a contractor and now subcontractor, a new auditor is saying I cannot charge for flights that do not orginate and end at a home airport. No one has ever said this before. Can someone tell me where this is referenced in the 1000+ pages of the FAR.
Our house is a small Cape, with a crawlspace attic. We’re going to get a home energy audit in the next couple of weeks, and the insulation of the attic is of particular concern for us, as it really gets quite warm on our second floor. Can I get your insulation wisdom here? [more inside]
I've had a home-owners policy with the same insurance company since purchasing my house in 2002. Last week, I had a message on my answering machine from a man identifying himself as an auditor with a 2nd party surveying firm. He said he was calling at the request of my insurance company to set up a date/time for a survey of my house. [more inside]

Got a Government research contract - now everybody needs to start tracking their time with some kind of DCAA compliant time card system. We're a small 10 person start-up and there's a bewildering range of people and companies offering time tracking solutions. So I'm seeking the hive mind's experience. Should I just use a paper time-cards? If so, where can I find a good template or sample? Should I go with a software or web-based solution? We only have one contract and it encompasses almost everything we do so there's not a lot of complexity tracking multiple proposals. Our business is not to be a government contractor - this project is more in the line of a small business incubator grant.

How can I find out whether or not my mortgage company is ripping me off? I thought about something like a "forensic audit" but I see via Google that that is the hot new scam, and I don't want to be taken for a ride (twice). I am not looking to modify my loan or get out of my mortgage, I just want to make sure that my payments (for which I pretty much always pay extra) are being applied correctly. [more inside]

I work as a nanny. I work part time for 3 different families. They all know that nannying is my full-time career. Everyone's paying me off the books right now. They all should know better, one family is 2 lawyer parents. I want to pay taxes. Can I? I'm pretty sure I won't owe any taxes because I make so little and when paid legally I never have but the families I work for definitely owe their share on my wages. Will the families I work for all get audited if I try to file? What happens? Should I try to tell them that this is my plan? The last time I talked to a family about wanting to be paid legally the gig fell apart, it was a total disaster and I lost the job. I don't want to screw people over but I don't want to get screwed myself.

I'm meeting with a tax accountant for the first time on Wednesday. I'm a freelancer who gets my income from a number of sources (a combination of freelancing and part time salary work), so my taxes are pretty complicated. Two friends who do similar work recommended this guy, and said he got them big refunds last year, despite having almost no taxes withheld all year. I'm a newbie to taxes -- when meeting this guy, how can I tell whether he's on the up-and-up or whether he's going to get me audited?

We just had a home energy audit performed on our house, and are preparing to pull the trigger on several thousand dollars' worth of insulating, weather stripping, leak sealing, etc. We're trying to maximize the amount of rebate money we can receive, either through local or federal tax credits, or through stimulus money, NYSERDA or some other source. We're having trouble finding out what exactly is available for the type of work we're having done as NY State homeowners. Any suggestions? Note: we're not interested in low-interest loans or other financing-based incentives.
