Upping my audio fidelity - tiny apartment edition

I've been listening to CDs on a crappy thrift store boombox for years now, and would like to buy some equipment to get me to a higher level of audio quality. The complication is that I live in a small apartment with small children, and don't have the space for a standard component stereo system. [more inside]

Where to find a quality record player?

I'm looking for a record player for my parents for Christmas, the highest quality within a budget of $400-$500. This has been addressed in the past, but that was a year ago, and my budget is greater. Can any audiophiles give me recommendations on equipment? [more inside]

I'm looking for a pair of not-too-expensive clip-style headphones to replace my current MDR-Q33s. Earbuds irritate me and I like being able to keep one phone on while using the other ear for short conversations and the like. Any recommendations?

Recommend some good software for multi-track recording in Windows.

What are some popular (both expensive and cheap) software packages for windows based multi-track recording? Also, are there any relevant and good websites/webcommunities and newsgroups? Soundcard/hardware recommendations would be nice as being limited to one input might be a drag and I really don't know how to tell the difference between a good soundcard chipset and a bad one.

Where are the best places online to buy a new car stereo in-dash receiver?

I am in the market for a new car stereo in-dash receiver, and I was wondering what the best method of buying one would be, and where the best places on the Web to purchase might be? I only want to purchase an in-dash receiver with MP3 capability (no pre-amps, etc.), but I'm also interested in a system that I can plug a portable MP3 player into if necessary. I am looking to spend under $250 total for a receiver. [more inside]
