Learning Reason

I have to learn to use Reason 3.0 for a job that starts at the end of this month. I've used ProTools and Sonar to record, mix, and master music in the past. I've downloaded the Reason demo. Any good resources for getting up to speed with it quickly?

I don't want mpga's, I want mp3's!

What the heck is an mpga and why is my computer saving music files in that format? I have an iBook G4 and about a week ago, when I downloaded music from audioblogs it started saving the files as mpga's, which won't open in iTunes. If I manually change them to mp3's, they open in iTunes, but are 0:00 long. I suspect it might have something to do with having downloaded RealPlayer (which I've since uninstalled), but I haven't been able to fix this or find any useful info on Mac help forums.

embedded audio in a gif

So, on Waxy links today, I found this gif file, which, when loaded in Winamp, plays a brief, irritating song. How's that happen? When I load it into Windows Media Player, it displays as an animated gif. One file type, multiple properties. Can anyone elaborate on what's happening here?

A/V File Sharing

Why, in this modern age of file sharing, do some musical artists seem to openly welcome live audio recording/sharing of concerts but appear reluctant, if not actively opposed, to live video recording/sharing of the same events?

Why do audio cassettes go odd?

I commute and run to books on tape. Every so often, I will get a spate of too fast, high pitched Alvin Chipmunk playback. Flip the tape to side B at the same point- no problem. Flip it back- Alvin. Change tape player- same thing, so it seems not to be the machines. At worst this can go on for an entire side. A solution would be welcome (slapping tape firmly does not help, nor does rewinding), but mostly I'm wondering, what gives here?

What speakers should I spend $10,000 on?

HomeTheaterFilter: My friend currently owns a Rotel surround receiver and DVD player and six B&W 600 series speakers. He wants to upgrade speakers, and has budgeted $8,000-10,000 to do so. Should he, or is there another part of the system that needs upgrading more urgently? And if speakers are the way to go - keeping in mind that high-end home theater can be highly subjective - what should he get?

Loudspeakers on glass?

Hi all, on Regent St in Central London there are a number of shops that have sound eminating directly (it appears) from the window panes! I've tried in vain to find info on such a Cool Thing but haven't been able to find any more information.. there's http://www.remotemedia.co.uk which is a good start... any other information people have would be greatly appreciated!

Digital Voice Recorder for Mac

Yet another voice recorder question: I suddenly have potential access to a reasonable grant (theoretical max. $1000) to purchase a digital voice recorder. My Turntable needs to be soldered.

My Turntable will only play through one channel. I have a soldering question, because I have to replace the RCA cables. Can someone teach me how to properly solder audio equipment? I have never soldered before, but I am handy with electronics. The Turn Table in question is a Pioneer PL-10, a nice older one that goes well with vintage reciever. I bought it for $30 along with some scratched up first pressing Beatles albums. Basically, when the needle is down you can only hear one channel. There is absolutely no signal from the left RCA cable. When I reverse the plugs, the dead RCA cable is still dead.... just on the other channel. [more inside]

Music production: need a tempo-fluctuation-fixer.

Music production software: I need a beatfixer. I've got recordings of a live percussion ensemble. I've also got electronic/sequenced music that I want to mashup with the live percussion.
