I'd like your recommendations for intuitive sound studio software for mixing .wav files into original music. I have very little experience mixing music, so simple is good, but not at the expense of power and versatility. [more inside]
The factory-installed stereo in my car has stopped playing CDs, and my commute is fairly long, so this is essentially unacceptable. I've looked into getting it repaired, but the whole stereo'll have to be sent away for weeks, and it'll end up costing a bunch. But I've yet to find an add-on in-dash stereo for $200 or less that isn't terribly ugly. [more inside]
Windows XP: What does the "Speaker setup" option do, if you choose one of the various stereo options (desktop, laptop, monitor stand, monitor side, keyboard, headphones)? How does it change the waveform? It seems to me that things sound better if I pretend my headphones are desktop speakers... [more inside]
iPod: does it really need Win XP SP2, or can it work with SP1? Relatred: how can I update win XP to SP2: it just isn't offering me the option, although it used to.

I'm looking for input on a business idea. With the boom in mp3 players, I thought it would be a good idea to open a store that specialized in that item, along with accessories, podcasting equipment, etc. [more inside]
How do I give someone a greeting card that has a short recorded audio clip of my choice on it? Surely someone has created a quick and cheap way to personalize a greeting card with a disposable audio device, yes?
i innocently inserted a CD Laser-Lens Cleaner-type thing into the slot-loading CD player of my '99.5 VW Jetta. It was playing ~60% of CDs inserted into it, but now plays 0%. Is there a remedy, or is iPod my only hope?
I'm curious about all the hype surrounding the Sonic Impact Class T integrated amp, and would like to use this curiosity as an excuse to finally set-up a small bedroom stereo system. The TNT Audio review (linked above) suggests >90 dB speakers - any suggestions on speakers to pair with this amp? I want to keep the price down, but I'm willing to pay enough so I can enjoy the sound. [more inside]

My friend has a VW Gol (not a Golf). She just had her stereo stolen. The wires that hook into the car's speaker system are fine and dandy. Is there a way to attach a portable CD Player to these wires alone (without replacing the stereo system and using a cd-player adaptor etc.)? [more inside]

I'm clueless when it comes to audio recording - what's the best way to record about 1-2 dozen people, in a larger room, having a roundtable discussion? [more inside]
Why, when a TV is turned on--even in another room--can I detect some kind of buzzing/electronic noise, that many other people around me can't detect?
I have two questions for MeFi audiophiles. Electricians might be able to help too. [more inside]
Why are the iPod adapters for broadcasting my iPod through a signal on the radio so crappy? Is it a law that the broadcasting signal can't be strong at all? And more importantly, does anyone have a recommendation for a good broadcaster for my iPod (For use in my car.) [more inside]
I need to receive emails containing lengthy audio. One mail account simply does not show the attachment coming in. My .mac email account gives the sender this message: "This message is larger than the current system limit or the recipient's mailbox is full. Create a shorter message body or remove attachments and try sending it again." My mail box is definitely not full. Does anyone know of any way to email larger audio documents? Or a (free, preferably) email account without such limitations? The sender is a city government entitity, so getting them to compress, etc., is unlikely. Thanks.

When I turn on the phantom power switch on my new Digidesign mbox, I get a warning that the device is pulling too much power from the USB port (and then it stops working). I'm using a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop, which is one of the recommended systems on Digidesign's site. I have Win XP Service Pack II installed. What gives? [more inside]
Audio Production filter: I'm looking for background music for an audio project. The problem is, I don't know how to describe it. It's what I would call '1950's americana marketing music' or maybe 'bouncy happy super-retro cliche music'. See inside for a link to an example... [more inside]
What's the best way to link to a lot of MP3s on one page? [more inside]
I'm thinking about moving to a more minimalist home theater -- in-wall speakers, all components in a nearby closet, nothing in the room except the TV attached to a wall. I'm not finding much in the way of resources for doing this in existing construction. Anyone ever try something like this? [more inside]

Audiofilter: with amazing speed, Digital Audio Tape (DAT) has become a legacy format. In the archiving community, talk is that no major company is actually producing a component level DAT deck anymore, and the portables are soon to disappear as well. Anyone know differently, or know of a retailer still sitting on a significant stock of (new) component audio DAT decks? Lots of linguists, musicians, and ethnographers are suddenly desperate to score one. [more inside]
I am looking for a good, cheep/free sound editing program for my Mac. It needs to be able to produce files I can import to apple and adobe's video editing programs. Any suggestions would be great.

Our car was broken into today for the fourth time in about two years and the stereo was stolen for the third time. The car is getting pretty worn out overall, so we're probably going to sell it and get a newer one once we get the window replaced. What should we consider when shopping for a newer car and associated car audio, to avoid being a target? [more inside]
