Two part question: I have an M4A audio file that’s about three hours and 90 MB, and would like to split it into three tracks at specific time stamps. What’s the best or simplest way to do this on a Mac without re-encoding? There’s a bunch of stuff that Google returns, but I can’t tell what’s good and what’s not. After that, I’d like to increase the tempo of one file. Any recommendations for tools? Command line or GUI are fine. Thanks.
I have a computer with a headphone jack on the back. Is there a good way to plug in headphones from the front - USB or otherwise? [more inside]
I listen to most of my music on CD, and want to replace the cheapo Philips stereo and speakers from my student days with a better quality system. Recommendations for receiver and speakers please? Total budget around $500. [more inside]
I have a 2003 VW Passat with no aux in jack. I have been using a cassette adapter to get audio from my phone, but the tape deck has stopped working. (It beeps and says Tape error.) I have tried replacing the cassette adapter but the same thing happens, so I know it is the player. [more inside]
I'm working on a fun project which involves multiple bicycles and multiple boomboxes. I am trying to figure out how to synchronize music playback on all of these boomboxes, using phones. I assume this would be streaming from the internet (3G/4G/whatever), but are there streaming services that ensure totally synchronized playback across multiple devices? [more inside]
I have these speakers: link. I have a pc monitor with 2 hdmi and one vga. My ps4/xbox one are connected to the hdmi ports and my pc is vga. The speakers are hooked up directly to the monitor so that sound works for everything. I bought a xonar dg for the sole purpose of getting rid of the hiss from the onboard crap in the pc I have. I was wondering what the best way to hook up the speakers are? The speakers themselves have a headphone output so I just plug my headphones into them rather than on a case by case basis of whatever console I'm using. I just don't want to ruin my headphones in the process. 99% of the time I'm just watching youtube or listening to a podcast while playing a game of fifa so i don't feel like upgrading speakers right now. Headphones are hd 558 if that helps at all. Should i just hook up unused sony studio monitors to the back of pc and call it a day?
I'm helping a friend with an art installation that calls for 4-6 channels of spoken word audio, with speakers spread throughout the room. I could certainly drive this from a computer with an appropriate audio interface, but it would be nice to have a portable setup for the artist so I don't have to be there with a computer running a DAW to drive it. Is there such a thing as a 4-6 channel (output) interface for the iPad? I've seen plenty of 4-in/2-out options, but nothing with more than stereo output.

Suggest a microphone to plug into my iPhone 5S to improve the audio of my iPhone videos? Lavalier preferred, but a little shotgun thingie would be ok too. Hoping to achieve improved voice quality with less roomtone, and I need the audio file to record right onto the video file- I don't want to sync it in post. Thanks!

I use my computer to play music via iTunes and my computer uses two BOSE companion speakers for output. In order to play music I am faced with a total of 3 volume controls each found separately throughout iTunes, Windows 8, and my Bose speakers. How should I adjust each volume setting to achieve the best sound quality?
I recently went to the "Doctors' Wives" garage sale thing that was happening a couple of weeks ago and bought a nice pair of speakers for $20. They were a steal and although I have to do a minor amount of work on one of them, they're amazing! I hooked then up to my parents' amp and we've been having a great time with them. However, I didn't realize this garage sale was only once a year, and they had a lot of other nice, vintage speakers for $20. I want a pair for my room and a new amp so I can listen to music or the radio in bed. While craigslist has some good speakers and amps sometimes, and the SPCA also has some good stuff, I was curious if there was a store or another thrift store that sells that kind of stuff. Googling only returns Beat Buy and car audio places. Thanks!!
I am envisioning software that is like 2D+time animation-layout software, for placing audio sources onto a flat plane / stage, and editing them over time to slowly move around on that stage, instead of wrestling with the less-intuitive Left-Surround Right-Surround Center-Channel fader levels in ProTools HD/TDM. Does anyone on MetaFilter know of such a software tool? [more inside]
I use an Android phone as my main audio player (both music and podcasts). I'd like to use it to play audio wirelessly over my home theater system. The Bluetooth receiver I got for this isn't cutting it. What's the best way to do this? [more inside]
I need an mp3 player that I can control without being able to see it, using my fingers to feel and press the buttons. I currently have an iPod Shuffle, and I like it. The problem is that I need more storage. I'm looking for recommendations for mp3 players that have physical buttons for volume and skip/repeat, and 8+ GB of storage. Also, I need it to be available to buy new. I don't want to buy anything used. Thank you.
I am looking for a program that synchronizes movement through a timeline to identical times as successively displayed in a spreadsheet. Specifically, I want to play an audio file and as the file plays, I want unique elements in the audio file that I've identified at specific times to be highlighted in the spreadsheet. I want to show very detailed and subtle changes in B as they occur in A. Does anything like that exist or does it have to be built?

I'd like to include some audio in a web cam broadcast, but right now all I can do is play the audio out of my speakers to the web cam mic, which of course sounds terrible. Is there a way I can stream the audio directly into the broadcast from, say, iTunes or some other application?
I'm simplifying my audio setup to a bookshelf speaker/subwoofer system in my living room, after a Peachtree Nova/Ohm Walsh MicroTall setup for several years. I'm looking to spend around $350-400 on an amp/receiver and have several requirements and questions about how to choose the right equipment. [more inside]
I have a landline and it also has a cordless handset. When people call me, all is well. When I call them, they cannot hear me though I can hear them fine. The same is true for the corded and cordless handset. How is this possible and how can I fix it? I'm in Toronto Canada if that makes any difference regarding landlines.

For the past thirty years I've been trying to identify every song on a cassette tape I made from the radio. I have now found them all, except one. My personal music collection is divided between vinyl records (easily played over the stereo, no problems there) and over 70GB of music mp3s on my laptop. I almost never listen to my mp3s anymore because laptop speakers suck and I'm past the point of listening to my music on headphones only; and also because I still haven't figured out a way to wirelessly send/access (either via wifi, bluetooth or cloud storage) the music to my TV or to my amplifier directly. Right now, if I find a video I really like on youtube with subpar volume, I have to download it and play it via VLC. Kind of ruins the playlist experience. Are there plugins or extensions that will do the same thing, ie increase the level of the audio output?
Hi MeFi, My lights were left running on my Honda Civic 2008 and the battery drained. After a jump from AAA, the car audio hasn't been the same. To clarify.. it sounds much much louder. For example, I used to be able to turn it up to Level 30, right now if I go over Level 5 it sounds extremely loud and bass is very distorted. What could it be? Did battery jump somehow fry my speakers/receiver? Thanks for your help!
I have many folders each of which contains 125 or so brief wav files (1 - 4 seconds) with file names 001.wav, 002.wav ... n.wav. I want to create a long wav file for each folder that has the original files intercut with periods of silence equal to x times the length of the preceding individual source wav file. So, like, 001.wav + silence of length x times the length of 001.wav + 002.wav + silence of length x times the length of 002.wav + and so on. [more inside]
AV experts, can you help me? I set up my current home entertainment system 11 years ago, and it's worked well for me. Now it is failing, and consumer electronics have moved on. I can't just replace the failing component with a new one because it is not being manufactured any longer, and I only need some parts of it. I'm having trouble integrating new things into the old setup. I need to upgrade/reconfigure my AV, and possibly wireless. Details inside. [more inside]
Until recently, I was able to plug headphones or audio cables running between the Line In jack on my monitor into the green Line Out jack in this picture, and successfully hear sound. I don't know what happened, but now I get nothing. There has been a weird unprompted change in my volume control settings: it looks like this when before I'm pretty sure it was a speaker icon. I can click on the slider and do a test like so, but no actual sound comes out. Can you help me troubleshoot?

I often listen to audio books on CD in my 2014 Subaru Impreza. When I turn the CD player on, the volume doesn't start at full blast -- it sort of fades in. And when I turn the CD player off, the sound doesn't stop instantly -- it fades out. I find this annoying. Is there some setting that I can adjust to make the CD player come on and off instantly? I looked through the manual, but I couldn't find anything, and I'm finding it hard to Google. Thank you!

I'm looking for the title of a audio-cassette album I owned sometime in the 1990s, which had the themes of various Star Trek movies and, particularly, tracks of sound effects of the ships warping that I believe were unique to the tape (as opposed to having been taken from the films). [more inside]
