Who has a cheap A/V receiver that has not broke in the last 5 years?

If you have a low-end A/V receiver (less than $400) that has lasted without problems for 5 years or more, tell me the brand name. I won't buy the same model that you bought five years ago, but I may choose the same brand, and go buy the latest equivalent offering manufactured from them. [more inside]

Retro-fitting MP3 input to 1970s record player?

I have a record player from the 1970s (a Garrard 2025 TC to be exact). How difficult (or risky) would it be to replace the sound input from the tape deck with a mini-jack input so that I can play MP3s (such as from an iPod) through the speakers? Is it just a matter of taking the back off, cutting wires and splicing them together?

Audio / tone generator for classroom demonstrations

I'm teaching a college section on audio perception, and I'm looking for (preferably free) tone generation software for classroom demonstrations -- in particular, something that will let me control the level of the individual harmonics independently. It would be great there was also the capacity to control the ADSR envelope, but that's less important. I'd also be interested to hear about anything else that people have found useful for a class like this. Thanks!

How can I switch from music to my audio book quickly on my iphone

I listen to a lot of audio books on my iphone while driving and working. I also like listening to music in between for short periods, but still need to keep my place in the book. Right now I am using the bookmark app to keep track of the audio book, which seems to be the best app that I have tried so far. But the problem is that whenever I want to switch back to my playlist of music, the iphone music app defaults to the audio book that was last played. Is there any better way of switching back and forth so that the music app can remember that it is supposed to play a playlist and the audio book app remembers to start where I left off in the book? How to fix the LOUD and the quiet on my TV?

When I watch a movie on my TV, the audio is very LOUD and the dialogue is often quiet. I have to turn up the volume--way up--to hear dialogue and then BAM! An action scene with lots of explosions and heavy music forces me to turn it way down. The constant switching drives me nuts! [more inside]

The sound on my vintage receiver cuts out.

My dad recently gave me his mid '70s-era receiver. It's a Kenwood KR-5600 (here's a photo). I've got it up and running and it mostly sounds great to my ears, but the sound sometimes fluctuates (cutting/fading in and out) when I'm playing my turntable through it (a Toshiba SR-F770 direct drive...nothing fancy). How to Batch Convert using MAX or Fix XLD crashing on Bulk Conversion

XLD was working fine unless I have too many albums (such as 30 folders/albums apiece). I am not figuring out the interface on MAX for a batch conversion with several subfolders. I basically am using VBR to compress my music to smaller mp3 format. On XLD, there is Preferences-->Preserve directory structure-->subdirectory search depth "0", which makes it work on a small scale, like 10 folders or so, before crashing. So, if anyone can tell me what I am missing on MAX's menu or if they had the problem with XLD and fixed it, I am good to go. I like XLD's interface but it won't process my whole iTunes at a go.

Easy ways to improve sound quality on voice recordings?

I have some digital audio recordings of interviews conducted by telephone that I must transcribe. The sound quality of the responses is very poor. In the past, I have been able to get through the poor quality and make out what was being said. However, these are particularly bad. I know very little about audio editing. I have tried using tools like Audacity to manage the sound levels and remove background noise, with some success. However, I wonder if there are other quick fixes that I could try?

Why won't my Karaoke mixer mix mics?

I recently received a Arirang AR-36K karaoke machine. I have hooked it up to my TV and receiver, which has ports only for stereo sound from this input. It has two ports on the front for microphones, which I've plugged in; however, the sound input from the mics isn't mixed into the sound output. I know that the input is actually happening, because the on-screen display reacts to my (terrible) singing, but it just doesn't get mixed -- and the menu option to turn up the microphone volume simply doesn't work (it gives the "command not allowed" icon whenever I press any button on the requisite screen). The hardware microphone volume knobs seem to have no effect, either. Any ideas?
